That creepy girl and saying goodbye to running shoes.

Two things that I am going to miss a lot about being pregnant:

1.  Baby girl kicking me all day and feeling her squirm around.  I especially love when I am laying next to Billy and she knows that and does an extra hard kick so that he can feel it too and he says, “I FELT THAT!”  She is already teasing Billy;)

2.  Getting out of doing core work.  I am sure I could at least attempt it and modify it but I am using my pregnancy excuse as much as I can because I despise core work.  Now I have a reason for being that creepy girl in pump staring at everyone else killing themselves off while she takes mirror photos of herself.

Photo 3

Help me come up with some excuses for after August of why I shouldn’t do core work.

After pump I did a few minutes on the elliptical and then made my way home, I had a date to get to.  I made a quick turkey sandwich on the way out the door but didn’t have enough time to take a picture of it….I was in a rush because I like to take a shower and actually try to get ready when I meet people for the first time.  This way they agree to hang out with me again in the future.  Once I have sucked them into my friendship then I start showing up in gym clothes with hair that hasn’t been washed in 4 days.

I got to meet the incredible Jenny for froyo.  Jenny was in a serious car accident 5 years ago and has spent these last years in intense rehab to be able to walk again and now run again….this year she will be doing her first 5k since the accident.  Such a huge inspiration to me.

Boxes.  (Disclaimer:  Mom, Sister and anyone else (probably just my dad and the employees of Yogurtland) that is going to miss us when we move stop reading now).  We are making the first step in our moving process.  We decided to start now so that Billy isn’t forced to do it all in August by himself while I am on the couch complaining about my back hurting and making him go to McDonalds for lemonade refills.

PS we talked about McDonald’s lemonade yesterday but for any lemonade newbies I just wanted to warn you that you must go inside to get your lemonade.  I learned the hard way with the Incident of 2008 when they gave me a cup with 99% ice and just a few sips of lemonade when I went through the drive-thru.

DSC 1982

We are actually trying to not move very much stuff and instead give away or sell most of our things which so far I have been doing a great job of.

I am having a ridiculous time giving up any of my running shoes even if they are really worn down and have holes in them.  These were my first racing flats ever and they have more than enough miles on them (I kept very good care of them and kept them clean:) but I can’t let go of them.

DSC 1984

It scares me how attached I am to shoes yet I can get rid of everything else I own without thinking twice.  Maybe I will make a quilt out of the shoelaces and parts of all my different running shoes to sleep with each night.

—————————————————–

How do you really feel about core work?  Get it out there in the open.

Have you ever had racing flats?  Will you ever get any?  How many running shoes do you have in your closet right now?  Do you remember what your first running shoes were?

Do you get attached to things easily?  Do you hold on to certain things for a while?

Would you go for a fruity froyo or a chocolatey froyo right now?

I’d be your friend even if you didn’t shower! Probably because I also sometimes prioritize food over showering. Excuse for not doing core work: it shortens your psoas muscle, which can lead to both hip flexor tendonitis and general hip imbalances, which obviously causes every running injury EVER. I mean, if you stretch after you do core work this isn’t a problem but you can conveniently forget that part if you want :-D and YES to racing flats! I used to have a pair of hot pink Puma flats, and I can’t wait to race again so I can get more ridiculous colored flats!

My closet is packed with running shoes that are over mileage but still look good. It feels like such a waste to throw them out. Moving is my favorite time to chuck everything!! It feels so good to take a load of stuff to the thrift store and say goodbye forever.

Well I haven’t done any core work in weeks and I’m not pregnant! haha. I hate it so much- i’ll do a plank or two every so often but thats it.

I had a bunch of racing flats in high school/college for xc and track- I only really got attached to a pair where i won states and was all-american in. I don’t have any issues throwing out old running shoes though- although I save them for the gym/playing with the dogs etc.

I’m craving fruity froyo now- the heat always makes me crave fruity things!

P.S. I had a mcdonalds lemonade this morning :)

How often do you get new running shoes? Do you always throw your old ones out?

HAHAHHHHHHHAAA I love that pic of you in body pump! That fact that you took that pic in class kills me!

Core work is one of those things that I usually don’t feel like doing, but always feel great after I do it. There’s a new class at my gym that has a great 25-30 min “core” workout which includes all of the core muscles, not just abs, and it’s great.

I always go for the chocolatey fro-yo, no matter if I tell myself beforehand to get a fruit one!! Just something about it…

And yes, it seems hard to give up running shoes. I try to just keep my last pair for walking and non-running exercises, but I think I have 5 pairs in my closet (or car) now! I did just hear of an organization that donates old running shoes to high school track students that can’t afford them and thought that was a pretty cool idea – just as long as they aren’t too worn.

I also didn’t know that mcdonald’s had lemonade?! Will have to try it now!

Reply

What is this core work you speak of?

Chocolate for sure!

No racing flats, I am no where cool enough or fast enough for those. Just beat up, dirty, way over miles shoes.

I really don’t like core work; I think it is just so boring.

I don’t really have racing flats, although have looked into them often. I think my first running shoes were an early version of the Asics Cumulus and right now have 9 pairs of (current) running shoes in my closest- just realising that makes me think I might have a wee problem because my Kinvaras are really the only ones I run in now.

Jenny’s story is so awesome! I can’t imagine having to learn to walk (and them run) all over again.

Reply

I currently have 5 pairs of running shoes in my closet. Ones that are my current, ones for cross training and ones for hiking (they get knocked down a knotch each time I get a new pair). But obviously that leaves some to spare. My husband has to convince me to get rid of them each time. I just have so many memories with every pair. Wow. I sound like a loser. lol. I’ve never had racing flats though. Perhaps because I am not super speedy like you!

Way to go Jenny! That is seriously amazing!

I think I would go chocolately right now, but that could change any minute. Was that an invite?! ;)

I LOVE core work! But I admit, I get into phases where I’m just bored of everything and I start looking up weird mat exercises online…then my eyes start to glaze over because they seem so complicated haha. You’re so cute as a preggers woman! I see a ton of pregnant people at the gym and during Turbo Kick class, I definitely want to be like that once I am pregnant one day :)

I love Yogurtland! And the story about Jenny is truly amazing. Kudos to her!

I get attached to everything… I’m so attached to San Diego and I don’t want to move back to Santa Clara! :(

Save the A3s! The new Type As are too light for the marathon… I have a backup pair of A3s under the bed – saving them for the future :-)

With this upper respiratory infection and sore throat I could go for any type of fro yo for some relief!!

What a pretty pair of kicks – I saw keep ’em!!! I get very attached to sneakers as of lately :)

Aww – feel better!

We had a garage sale last summer and I sold 4 pair of running shoes – one of them was the pair that I ran my first marathon in. I almost cried and was filled with regret for weeks about it… but now I have 5-6 more pairs piled up to take up the same space and 3 more marathons since.

i loooove your rvca shirt.

A core workout with a side of fruity fro yo, please! Love ’em both!

There is a class at my gym that is 20 mins and all core work. It’s a short class but my abs are sore for days. Not a fan of core work, but I can tolerate 20 mins!! I always get sentimental when I get a new pair of running shoes, especially when I think of all of the miles they got me through. I have problems hahaha :) wishing you and Billy the best of luck as you move- packing is no fun!!

Reply

The BF says I have a shoe problem in my closet. I think I only have 5 pairs of running shoes but have more then 30 pairs of footwear total. One pair of running shoes, I need to do a run in to see if I need to donate them. I didn’t like running in them after I wore them in the rain. They felt different. I do have one pair of work shoes that need to go for sure. I walk so much at work the tread is gone.

Chocolate fro-yo, please. :-)

Reply

I’m strangely attached to my running shoes too haha! I love throwing things away, but not these.
A little moving tip, pop into your local Starbucks, they’ll give you a ton of boxes for free. You might have to leave your phone number for them to call you when they have them, but they’re free!
We moved twice withing the last year and every moving box was from there.

Reply

I felt that way about the shoes I ran my first marathon in. I wanted to keep them forever, but the stink persuaded me otherwise. haha!

Reply

Save the shoes!! I had planned on keeping my first pair of pointe shoes from when I was a ballet dancer to show my future daughter but then I threw them away and I regret it!

Reply

I actually like core work…. it’s never too bad for me! I did 2 2 minute planks this morning after my run and 100 crunches! But arm work like lifting is so tough for me.

I do have racing flats. And two training shoes. The one pair I cannot make myself get rid of because I ran an amazing race in them (not the flats) and then the other ones I got before my stress fracture injury and I don’t know if I can trust them. Wow. I just felt like a weirdo. And I remember my first training shoes we’re Nike, super light, and I loved them! I miss them a lot.

I don’t really get attached to many things unless it has to do with a good memory like my shoes or something like that. Anything else it is PITCH!

I think I’d go for chocolate fro-yo with strawberries on top for a chocolate strawberry combo- the best!

Reply

Hey! I know how you can prolong core work just a little bit longer…. My doctor and everything i read online said you can’t do core work for eight weeks after giving birth!!! I’m not exactly sure why but it was something along the lines of your muscles separating during pregnancy or something. I’m here to help in ant way I can… Haha ;)

Reply

I am in the small minority that really, truly loves core work. I love that you can really feel your body working, during and days later!

I only have one pair of running shoes, and they’re also my first as a new runner. I’m itching to buy my second pair!

Reply

I am the SAME way with my racing flats!! I still have my spikes from high school cross country & track. Everytime I look I them I just smile..such good memories, I could never let them go!
Love that you took a picture of other people doing ab exercises- you are too funny :)
GOOD LUCK with all of the moving stuff- if I lived closer I would totally help you guys. Although two pregnant women running around may not be Billy’s idea of ‘help.’ We would probably just find a reason to run for frozen yogurt every few hours ;) Love ya! Xo

You and I will be moving around the same time. I am moving from Boston to Seattle mid August. I am taking my husband, 17 year old daughter and pup Jameson with me. My 20 year old will complete her senior year at University of New Haven in CT. I am also purging a lot of stuff, I have a lot on craigslist and if I don’t sell it I will move it to the free category. Good Luck!

I think core work is the debil! (Said in a Kathy Bates waterboy voice – and if for some STRANGE reason you haven’t seen that look it up on youtube! lol) And I would give my left pinky for some white chocolate mousse froyo with oreos on top right about now!

Reply

wow, seeing that picture has inspired me to go get froyo now. doing so in 5 minutes. thanks!

I HATE doing core work. I come up with every excuse in the book to avoid doing it, e.g. I need to organize my closet, wash the dishes, do laundry, and file my income taxes a year in advance before I do core work. ARGH!!!!!

I have seven pairs of running shoes in my closet right now – Asics, Brooks Mizunos, two pairs of Sauconys and two pairs of Nikes. Surprisingly it isn’t too difficult for me to get rid of the shoes once they have too much mileage on them – I always donate them and know they are going to a good cause. But in general, I am always working very hard to eliminate excess stuff and clutter (especially since my husband is a packrat). I operate better with less stuff sitting around!

Chocolate froyo all the way, baby!

Reply

I actually like core work but only if it’s burning because that way I know it’s working!
I’ve never had racing flats and because I have such finicky feet I probably will not. Right now that I can think of I have 6 pairs of running shoes. I don’t remember my first pair of running shoes except that they were Asics.
I usually get attached to things until we moved into our tiny apartment and realized we didn’t have room for things unless we really wanted/needed them.
I could go for a fruity fro-yo RIGHT NOW! :)

I think you should do a big piece of wall art with your old shoes. Nail them into a corkboard that’s painted like an all weather track or something. I’m sure Billy will love a shoe installation piece in your new home :)

Love core work! The burn is awesome :D

I only have two pairs of running shoes. I wear one pair for running and the other pair for chasing my two year old around all day. Ive never owned racing flats but would love some one day :)
And I totally get attached to certain things. I’ve never been able to throw out an old racing shirt even if they don’t fit. So I have a closet full of shirts that I’ll probably never wear but they hold memories and I treat them like souvineers.

Fruity froyo would be awesome right now. With extra strawberries yum!

Reply

I get my core work in the form Pilates and I love it!

Have you ever had racing flats? Will you ever get any? That’s laughable for me. I run but the word run is very generous. It’s more a cross between a jog and an attempt to throw myself forward. Not sure either of those movements would benefit from racing flats. ;-)

How many running shoes do you have in your closet right now? Three pairs. Mine go through three phases.
1. Running.
2. Around town/walking/everyday.
3. Yard work.
After that, they are officially declared dead.

Chocolatey froyo sounds perfect right now!

Selling or getting rid of most of your stuff for the move is so smart! When I moved to TX I moved everything in a U-Haul and it was awful! I will never do it again and recommend anyone who’s moving to do what you’re doing.

I just got racing flats through work, and I am IN LOVE.

Core work … hate sit ups, but enjoy more integrated exercises that challenge core muscles. However, core is certainly a weak spot for me. So … today I took “Group Core”, it’s a 30 min class (similar to body pump) only the different songs challenge different core muscles. The class was “fair” … not my preferred music or instructor. It was nice to be told what to do and work on core for a bit … I don’t do it when I am left to myself for workouts.

Reply

I hate core work. Like, hate it. Like, never do it. The end. :P

Reply

That’s so sweet she kicks hard when you’re lying next to Billy!
Love core work, but I need to make the time to do it more often!
Embarrassingly, I have EVERY pair of running shoes I have trained in for 16 years except for one (I had to leave them in Hawaii because I had zero luggage space left). I need to do something about that, but it’s a weird attachment!

Reply

Fruity fro-yo NOW. Dang you for making me want it :(( I’ll forgive you, I guess. I can’t seem to get rid of my Nike frees.. I have had them a year and a half and wear them every single day to work in. They are the only shoes that don’t hurt my feet standing all day because they are so LIGHT! I bought new inserts hoping to wear them longer…. so far so good!

Reply

If they’re the right size and you’re getting rid of any you should give me some of your clothes ;)

Reply

I love plain, tart fro-yo with fruit on it! So good!

I hate getting rid of clothes and shoes, especially workout ones. It’s so hard to find comfy ones (and pants that are long enough). Once my shoes are high on miles I use them to cross-train for a while, then give them away. I’ve actually given a few away at mud runs. You toss them in a huge pile and they clean and donate them afterwards. Have you ever done a mud run? I did a Tough Mudder. 13 miles. It was ridiculous!! More exhausting than my marathon. You crawl through tunnels filled with ice (it was only 50 degrees, do money bars 30 feet in the air over muddy water, run hills so steep you have to hold onto trees, run up a 50 ft ramp and jump off into a lake, swim across and run through electric wires….wowzers.

I’m not a huge fan of core work but I do know that after I had my daughter my core felt like jelly and I started having back problems when I was running do I had to really work at it for a while and now I am back to 3 times or less a week.

I hate getting rid of old shoes, it is the worst ever! When I got married my mom made me go through them and get rid of most of them:(

Moving is so not fun, we’re moving to Philly in August and we aren’t taking a moving van. Good luck moving to California especially with a new baby:)

FRUITY! Haha just had some actually. And I like core work! My stomach is the part of me that bothers me the most, so I like feeling the burn in my abs!

Reply

Fruity froyo! Have you ever had an Oreo ice cream sandwich? I had one tonight and it was very amazing. Highly recommend.

Reply

Wow Jenny sounds amazing and inspirational!

I get rid of things – sometimes not being a sentimental/emotional person helps!

I would definitely go for chocolate right now since I’ve had about nine pieces of watermelon today (oh, by the way, that article you showed about freezing watermelon – DO IT – it’s the best!).

Reply

Honestly, I hate core work. But it’s a necessary evil…I’m using pregnancy as an excuse to not even think about it…

I have one pair of racing flats that have only been worn for 9 miles. I got them for my last couple of races (when I jumped up to the 10k) in college and then I quit running and now I am holding onto them for when they are worthy of me again. I currently have 5(I think) pairs of running shoes, however 3 of them are too worn out to run it. I distinctly remember my first running shoes (blue and white adidas).

I get attached to things super easily and HATE throwing out anything. It was painful for me to throw out my first 4 pairs of running shoes, but I couldn’t even walk in them without them hurting my feet.

I could totally go for fruity froyo…Baby isn’t a huge fan of chocolate. If you lived anywhere near me, I’d totally take you out for some.

Reply

So your core work excuse is actually a good one! I’m a certified pilates instructor (you have to come to a class when you move here!) and since the stomach muscles are over top of the baby, its actually not necessary for you to work your abs at all! :) I swear it’s science! Also if you can avoid it – torso twisting in workout classes!

I love core work, but I’m totally weird. Also I love fruity fro yo with a chocolatey topping!

Reply

I had a really tough time giving away my first “official” pair of running shoes and even went so far as to take a picture of them. I know, I am a nerd! But I couldn’t help it and at least I was able to part with them. They did kind of change my life so I use this as part of my (crazy) reasoning :)

Reply

Hate core work and never do isolated movements. Instead I just started thinking about guiding every other strength exercise from my core and have seen better results. Love the mirror photos! And your hair looks amazing! I want locks like yours!

Reply

I totally know where you are coming from with the whole not showering thing and making people hang out with you. We just moved to Arizona and while it’s amazing here, most of the day I am by myself while my husband is at work. If I don’t get up and exercise I seriously think I could just lay in bed all day long. Thankfully I have a summer class I am going to take starting next month. Never thought I would be happy about school! And I also don’t blow dry my hair except for once a week, for church. It makes for some very interesting hairstyles! I read your article on Women’s Running website. Congrats!

Reply

your excuse after August … you just gave birth … you need a break? haha

Core work can suck it- otherwise I just have to suck it up ;)! As for fro yo, I prefer fruity flavors with chocolatey toppings!

bahaha You kill me Janae! I am impressed you showered. Wednesday is my showering day… but I skipped it yesterday b/c I knew I would be swimming in the evening… that is how much I value my appearance these days! ;)

Reply

I can’t give up shoes for the life of me either. I have six of the exact same worn out pair. Ha. Chocolate. Always chocolate. :)

Reply

I am exactly the same about my shoes! I like your idea about making a quilt. I keep my shoes FOREVER. I have not chucked out a single pair.

Reply

I really appreciate your level of dedication to take a picture in the middle of class! :)

Reply

Maybe you can come up with a couple smart places to stash a spare pair…
I keep a pair (with socks!) in my trunk in case my car breaks down out here in the country- I could easily run a few miles to the nearest house, but not if I’m wearing pumps! :)

Reply

I totally have hoarding tendencies and it’s always difficult to let things go! I’ve gotten much better over the years as I quickly learned that there was no reason to hold on to my old homework from college…or high school…

Reply

You should photograph everything you’re getting rid of and make a memory scrapbook – haha :o)

Reply

i would totally choose cake batter fro yo :)
I did some core work today at my gym in Air Core and I always hate core when I am doing it but then love it after :)

Reply

i hate core work, mainly because I feel like laying on the ground doing different variations of sit-ups does absolutely nothing.. what is that abs are made in the kitchen? thats not happening anytime soon because I’d have to give up things like the donut i ate and the lucky charms i plan on eating for dessert (why yes it is 10pm eastern time and the hubs and I are just eating dinner…)

I would be your friend and we could meet in all our sweaty, gym clothes glory and 4 day old hair! Dry shampoo is my best friend!

AND for moving – if you’re going to move again.. and you have the storage.. I highly recommend getting the big 30 gallon storage bins from target that way you always have them! the hubs and I have moved 3x in a year and those bins have saved our lives!!

Reply

I don’t have my first pair of running shoes (that was 21 yrs ago) but I am sentimental enough that I kept the tag -they were Asics Gel-111 and I got them in the fall of 1991 for my freshman cross-country season. Changed my life, those shoes did!

Reply

I just tried on some racing flats this weekend, but still haven’t made the decision whether or not to get any.

Good luck packing and moving! When my sister moved from St. Louis to San Fran, she sold everything in her apartment except her clothes. Crazy.

Reply

I’m late to the party, but YES I still have my first pair of Brooks. I just bought my 37th pair of brooks and I wish I still had all of them. We (my husband/enabler and I) made the decision to donate them to charity. I donated 28 pairs last year and I only cried for about an hour. Those shoes represented a LOT of sweat, tears, and even some road rash blood over the past 5 years and I felt like giving them away was giving away part of me. But I got over it when he shoved a bowl of ice cream in my face :)
