Foods that we all miss and throwing cottage cheese on lockers.

Yesterday’s quick 3 miles before school worked out so well that I decided to do it again this morning. We get out early on Friday’s and so after school I am going to hit up the gym to work up a sweat doing weights (I may graduate up from the 3 lb set to the 5 lb set).

As I was walking to my classroom with my best teacher friend this morning I was multitasking and started to shake up my cottage cheese, apple, grape bfast.  The lid was not on all the way.  Cottage cheese went flying everywhere.  It took 11 minutes to clean up and I was left with 3 grapes.

Good thing I am always prepared for my clumsy ways and have a back-up breakfast of yogurt and random fruit in the faculty fridge for days like this.

I walked into my boss’s office this morning to find four of the biggest boxes of donuts I have ever seen.  There must have been 100 donuts in each box.   It is moments like this that make you realize how beautiful life truly is.  One for me, one for baby:

I love the internet. You can find the most random things and be entertained for hours.  My latest form of entertainment came from a list of 25 Foods You’ll Never Be Able To Eat Again which made me remember some of the delicious foods that were taken away from us and never sold again.

By far the best M&M’s ever created.

How could they have taken this cereal away from me? Cinnamon AND syrup flavoring!!!

Never had the Magic Middles but I have added it to my Bucket-list to have them before I die.

My brown bag lunch included a squeeze it everyday of my life.

Even though I absolutely adore ketchup, I don’t think I could come near the purple ketchup.

Wow, isn’t it amazing how many posts I can write that are purely about food?  I guess I am really hungry and just counting down the minutes until I start my carb/cheese loading fest with Billy.  Running talk later, I promise.

If you plan on doing weights and cardio on the same day, which do you do first?

That’s for mentioning my giveaway!

I have never seen that purple ketchup before! I used to love Gushers, but they still make those. I love the mama and baby donuts!!

I like to do cardio first. Unless I take a BosyPump class, sometimes I’ll do cardio after.

Reply

Anytime Heather! Mmmmmm now you have me craving Gushers:)

Reply

I usually lift and do cardio on the same days about 4x a week and then just do cardio the other 2 days I work out and I always lift first on those 4 days. If I don’t then I am more inclined to just leave the gym after I do my cardio because I am so exhausted.

Reply

That is really smart because I usually DO leave after cardio even though I plan on doing weights after….I am going to have to copy you and your reasoning. Hope you are having a great day Amanda!

Reply

My crazy Friday night plans are not crazy at all – going out for pasta with a friend and then going to go drool over Zac Efron when we go to see The Lucky One after. Pretty excited about it!

Reply

Hey…that sounds like the BEST Friday night ever. Can I come?

Reply

Of course! Get your butt to Canada, girl :)

Reply

See you in a few hours:)

Reply

I remember those Magic Middle cookies! They were SO good!!!

Reply

I want some SO SO BAD!

Reply

I loved the Grilled Cheese Uncrustables. So sad that they are gone!! :(
My mom would pack my lunch until junior high. Although grades 1-4, I went home for lunch most days.

I usually take a strength training class then a cardio class. *Not always.

My crazy Friday night plans include going to the gym and then… DOWNTON ABBEY!!!!

Reply

Oh my goodness…the GC Uncrustables were the absolute best. Enjoy every second of Downton Abbey, I need to watch that show!

Reply

Wow I have never seen that purple ketchup! But a lot of these things bring back memories for me. I loved Keebler’s Pizzeria pizza chips, Hooplas (these chips in the shape of a ring), and Crystal Pepsi. Those crispy M&Ms were so good!

xo

My roommate in college kept stealing my beloved ketchup so I bought the green colored ketchup. Problem solved. Oh how I miss colored ketchup.

Cardio first! Then I do core work so I can lay on the ground and pretend to be doing something.

Reply

I always do cardio first! Only because weight lifting really tires me out for some reason. My weak muscles can’t handle it I guess. Pathetic!

I used to LOVE crispy M&Ms! I forgot about them. And squeeze its, I used to get those after school in grammar school. Probably is pure sugar, but luckily I that stuff didn’t matter to me in the 3rd grade.

Remember the Nestle Wonderball? The chocolate ball with the toy inside? I LOVED that! I can see though why they had to get rid of that one.

Reply

My mom went back to teaching full time when I was in 1st grade and she had us pack our own lunches. I was the kid with liversausage and cheese sandwiches!

Reply

I do cardio first. I figure we always need to warm up for 10-15 minutes before weight-lifting, so why not just take care of it it in one fell swoop with doing your cardio first?

Wow, that purple ketchup is something else! I definitely pay attention to color contrasts in my food, both for health reasons and for “plating” reasons (I watch a lot of Food Network), so that purple ketchup could create a lot of new looks!

Reply

That is tragic that your cottage cheese spilled everywhere! I would have literally cried, haha. Ahh congrats on being in the huffington post!! You are my hero.
I actually had a lot of those foods on that list. Do you remember dunkaroos? I don’t think they sell those anymore!
My mom always packed my lunch because I absolutely hated the school lunches. I thought they were gross and tested fake lol
If my goal was to focus on running, I would do cardio first. But now since my goal is more of weights, I do weights first.
No crazy friday night plans. Stuck in all weekend studying. Have a good weekend Janae! :)

Reply

Two words: Koala Yummies.

Reply

Orange yogurt!! Loved it as a kid, finally Chobani came out with some but it isn’t sold here yet.
My Mom packed my lunch all the way up to grade 12, I loved it. Every other Friday I got $5 for lunch though in Middle and High School :)
Cardio, then weights always.
Usually we stay home Friday nights, but since I was off work today I think we are having a early supper, going for ice cream (I had dental work done today) and going to a movie.
Have a great weekend Janae!

Reply

I( use to drink squeeze it’s all the time!!

Reply

Oh my gosh! That purple ketchup almost made me sick – seriously! I’ve never had it, but just looking at it….I can tell why they took it off the market :) I did LOVE magic middles cookies and crispy m&m’s. Makes me sad to think about them being GONE. I’m going to see 21 Jump Street with my sister. I don’t really know what it’s about but my sister somehow has free tickets…so I’m in! I always do cardio first. Probably because I hate weights and put them off until the last possible minute :)

There are two foods that I love and are still available but only on the other side of the country. I grew up on the East Coast of Canada but we live on the West Coast now. Out here you cannot get roast chicken flavour chips or moon mist ice cream. Whenever we go home those are the two things I absolutely have to eat!

Reply

Those donuts look ridiculously good.

My mom packed a lunch for me every single day of my school life. Now I pack Mike’s and my lunches everyday. Not out of love, but out of cheapness.

Reply

I got the string cheese (the swirl kind obviously) when I went to the store this afternoon! Best. Decision. Ever.

I always brought lunch to school. The most I ever bought lunch in the cafeteria was once a week. For over 2 years in high school I ate peanut butter (no jelly) sandwiches exclusively at lunch time. I talked so much during my lunch period that I never had time to eat anything more than the sandwich. Senior year I finally graduated to a big girl lunch: big salads with cheese and triscuits on the side :)

Reply

OMG SQUEEZE ITS!!!!! I totally forgot about all these foods! And I’m so sorry to hear about your cottage cheese, but good thing you got those donuts to make up for it, they look amazing.

Reply

I loved French Toast Crunch! I also loved S’Mores cereal but it’s no longer sold :( And Dunkaroos! Though I think you can order those online.

Reply

Purple ketchup!! Holy moly! I couldn’t eat it eIther but it’s funny. Miss squeeze its. Did they stop making them? My family always bought knock off stuff so when I got real ones it was super special. :)

Cardio first then weights for me.

I packed my lunch depending on what they had on the school menu. I pack mine everyday now!

My husband and I are sitting in my car waiting for the HS tennis team to clear the courts so we can play tennis! We’re terrible. But it’s fun!!

Friday night plans – a bike ride to burn off pre-race nerves. This is the most hyper I have ever been for a race!

Thanks so much for the giveaway shoutout!

Reply

So sad about the cottge cheese! Good thing there was back up…and then back up for your back up ;)

I always do cardio first, then weights. I have read so much stuff about doing it the other way around, but I would rather put my energy into a good run :)

I miss the mint Herhsey’s chocolate bars with the cookie crumbs in them. Do you remember those? Also dunkaroos and bonkers candy.

My mom packed my lunch in elementary (cold cereal) because I was so picky. I will probably be doing the same for my kids, but not cereal! lol. It will be a good one. It will just be easier with my daughters food allergies if I make it for her.

Hope you have a great race tomorrow! Have so much fun!

A trainer at my gym always suggests lifting weights first and then cardio.

My Friday night is wild and crazy…making homemade buffalo chicken pizza and watching Food Network. ;)

Reply

Oh my gosh!!! Congrats on the Huffington Post article!! That’s so cool! I’m so happy for you!

I used to pack my lunch most days, and sometimes get items from the cafeteria too! I’m soo sad squeeze-its are gone. Those were the best! My favorite was dunkaroos. I’m pretty sure they don’t make those anymore. So sad!

Reply

Food I loved as a kid: those Spice Girls candies that came with stickers and sailor moon popsicles.
Great article, I need to listen to some Fall Out Boy. Also, I stared at those donuts for a good solid minute. I must have some now:)

Reply

There were these soy crisps at Trader Joe’s. I can’t remember the exact flavor, but it was parmesan, garlic, & something. They were DELICIOUS. I would go to TJ’s with my roommate in college and buy like 8 bags at a time because we didn’t go very often. Then I studied abroad for a semester and came back and they weren’t on the shelves. I asked an employee and they told me they were discontinued. Worst welcome home present ever!

Reply

WHAT?! They don’t sell french toast crunch anymore?! I mean, I don’t really eat it anymore, but I’m still surprised that it’s gone haha. It used to be one of my fav cereals :). I always do weights first because if it’s a weights day then I want to put more of my energy toward doing that!

Reply

Squeeeeezze IT! I still remember those dang commercials and I LOVED those things!!!

Crispy m&m’s were the BEST, I miss them :(

Reply

Cape Cod used to make the most delicious sea salt popcorn (prepopped) that came in a sky blue bag. I have expressed my disappointment to them no less than 10 times that not having it anymore makes me very sad, and that they should really start production on it again. I’m actually sad right now thinking about how I can’t have it.

Reply

I grew up drinking Postum and was SO sad when they quit making it!!! Pero just isn’t the same. (my hubby thinks I’m CraZy). My replacement now is dandelion root herbal tea, with a touch of milk & stevia. I still have half a bottle of Postum on my shelf.. the expiration date is Mar 08. Think I can still sell it on ebay? I bet it tastes yummy. I just can’t bear to get rid of it… I think I’ll keep it there until I die :).

Reply

Magic middles and sqeezits got me through elementary school. Totally forgot all about them!

I really miss crispy M and M’s…apparently I was the only one and they are gone. Luckily there are pretzel M’s now!

Reply

I didn’t even realize that most of those things aren’t sold anymore! Now I’m sad =(

Reply

I didn’t know they stopped making French Toast Crunch and Squeezeits! I feel like a part of my childhood is gone. Sad. French Toast Crunch was a genius cereal idea too.

Reply

Apparently it was an off brand or something, but I just saw squeeze-its at the store last week. So no worries there.

I ate school lunch and I LOVED it when we had maple bar doughnuts! SOO GOOD I wish I had one right now. :)

To me it doesn’t matter when I do weights and cardio which is first, but if I am doing 2 workouts 1 usually has to be a class to keep me motivated, so it depends on the class schedules.

Reply

Two words: Jelly Tots. Did you guys have them in the States? Little jellies covered in sugar? Sooo good.
Good luck tomorrow!

Reply

Dude I was the Blue Crispy M&M for Halloween. Don’t even get me started! And SqueezeIts were awesome! Did you have Mondo? I remember it had a weird squiggly logo. But the thing that I miss more than ANYTHING else in the culinary world:
Team.
Cheerios.
The perfect food. A mix of Frosted, Honey Nut, and Multigrain/Regular. They came in the red box for the 1996 Olympics and then left and then came back again because they were so popular. And then left. I still talk about them.
Also-Extra Green Apple Gum. My favorite flavor. It didn’t make the transition to the flat paper packs. Sad face.

Tonight was pretty chill since D and I have both had an exhausting week. We went to Asahi Japanese Steakhouse and then came home to snuggle up and watch tv. We’re so awesome.

I totally loved all those foods except the squirt ketchup. I was just talking about that french toast crunch cereal the other day! It was amazing!

Reply

i remember that ketchup! but my mom would not buy it due to the colour!
since you are big into donuts right now….there was a huge grocery store in my city that made the BEST donuts with icing and sprinkles…it shut down years ago and i can still imagine the taste of those amazing donuts!
cardio then strength training gets whatever time is leftover…hopefully not too much.
have a great evening, janae!

Reply

I loved m&m crispy candies. But I REALLY loved the 3d doritos, do you remember those? they were so delicious.

Reply

Favorite discontinued foods: clearly Canadian (so good!), orbitz drinks, crystal Pepsi, green ketchup, and a couple things from trader joes (pomegranate glaze, chocolatey bites cereal, ginger soy carrots and a few others that I can’t quite remember). Bring them all back!!!

Reply

my friends and i call Cinn. Toast Crunch cereal crack. :)

Reply

Peppermint Patty bites were the best. Also loved Mr Phipps Pretzel Chips and the old Smores cereal, Smores Crunch.

Reply

I’m not sure if they still sell them, but I LOVED Dunkaroos!

Reply

I loved nacho cheese cheetos. I used to eat them everyday in junior high.
In elementary I used to bring a lunch in my favorite lunch box. I usually had a sandwich, chips and a piece of fruit. Around the 5th grade I started bringing Cup of Noodles and cheese and crackers.

Reply

I LOVED Squeeze-Its as a kid…although I think I was more fascinated by the actual bottle ha! I prefer to do cardio and weights separately but if I club them together, it’s weights first…otherwise I feel to exhausted to lift!

Reply

I went abroad to Australia and the first thing I noticed was the packet of crispy M&Ms at the dingy convenience store (not the amazing beaches, endless sunshine or ENORMOUS spiders). I spent a semester with those crispies…definitely a reason to go back!

Reply

omg, I LOVED squeeze it’s, and I was always jealous of my friend cause her mom bought cooler flavors than my mom did. Haha. My Friday night involved a long workout followed by tv, sushi, and the bf.

Reply

We still have crispy m & m s in Australia !!!

Had a race today , 5km , 24 minutes flat :)

Reply

I love the crispy M&Ms. And they are still sold in Germany too. Phew!

Reply

Umm it would be CRISPY M&Ms. I LOVED LOVED LOVED them. Squeez-its = bomb. I think they will re release them once I have a child I just know it.

I went and saw the Hunger Games again last night. Crazy Friday night plans! Tonight is a girls night out in the city – which I need the energy for :)

Here is the low down on weights before/after cardio. If you want to bulk up – before cardio – if you are just looking to be lean/define muscles – after cardio. I don’t want mass so I always do it after!

Reply

Hi Janae! I’m pretty sure they still sell crispy M&Ms in Europe, I saw some a couple of months ago in England!

Reply

Oh, so funny! I’m eating those crispy M&Ms right now and they are delish!
That purple ketchup on the other hand just seems toxic.

Reply

Hmmm, I don’t know what foods I miss? Dunkaroos maybe?(they may still have them but not sure)

My parents always packed my lunch but sometimes in high school I would eat both :)

I always do cardio first. Get my juices going!

We had a way crazy night and passed out at 9 ;) ahh we are so cool lol!

Reply

Ahhhh I LOVED magic middles!!!

Reply

Omg they cancelled crispy mms?!? I thought maybe I just hadn’t seen them in say a few years lol. Pretzel mms are a poor substitute bring back the crispies!!!

Reply

hhaha ahh squeeze its!! how funny!! that purple ketchup looks pretty special…

Reply

Ahhhhh so so cool! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to get them!

Reply

I’ve looked so hard for French Toast Crunch. So sad to see it gone. Was my favorite.

Reply

we sell that cereal in canada!! French toast crunch……..

Reply

you absolutely have to find magic middles…they are so amazing! I let out a huge gasp when I saw them in the post. gah, so good! Keebler elves are magic.
packed lunch everyday until high school where I bought everyday.
cardio is always first…and then I usually cut the weights short. I like my sweat :)

Reply

I went to Amsterdam in June 2010, and they had Crispy M&M’s there!! It was a great reunion!

Reply

Oh man I remember Squeezeits! That’s a great post!

Reply

I used to bring my lunch to school and I still bring my lunch to work :)

I am definitely going to be packing my kids lunch with organic, nutritious fruit veg from my garden and yummy baking that I baked.

YOU CAN STILL BUY CRISPY M&M’s IN NEW ZEALAND!!!!! I will have to send you some :)

Reply

Crispy M&Ms were my FAVORITE. Pretzel M&Ms slightly fill that void but never completely. PS, your and Billy’s running recaps were great!

Reply

I know – totally random. I skimmed through your old blog posts and guess what I’m munching on? Crispy M&Ms. They’re still sold in Europe.
I know – it’s mean of me, but the coincidence just made me laugh :-)
