Olympic Trials Athlete #2 and A Disappointment

Who would have thought that trying to wake up at 5:45 after waking up every day at 11 for two weeks would be so difficult?  For the first few miles of my treadmill run I ran with my eyes closed because they were just that tired, no picture obviously because how do you take a picture with your eyes closed?

I played a very mean trick on myself.  Two weeks ago I finished off one of my favorite candy bars that a student gave to me at work.  I was so excited when I got to school because the wrapper was still on my desk and looked as though there was some left, I forgot I finished it all and there wasn’t even a crumb left.  Devastating.

Today we are talking about Amy Hastings (if you missed the first post about Desiree Davila and the Olympic trials click HERE to read it).  We are now ELEVEN days away from the trials held in Houston and from the comments of the last post about this, some of you will BE THERE.  I expect you to take a trillion pictures and stalk down the athletes like I would if I were there:)

You know…Amy can run a marathon in 2:27:03…..no big deal;)  Not only did she run that incredible time in the LA Marathon but that was her marathon DEBUT, her first marathon ever and the third fastest American debut ever.

(Photo and information SOURCE and you can find a great Q&A with her HERE)  PS I am obsessed with her red shoes.

While Amy was in college training in Flagstaff, Arizona her biggest dream was to train with Deena Kastor.  After a tough year she had to make a decision between stopping running and trying something new.  She decided to call Mammoth’s head coach and train with some of the best people in the world, including Deena.

After training with the Mammoth team for a little over a year she placed THIRD in the 1/2 Marathon Championship in 2010 with a time of 1:11:19.

And regarding her training for the marathon:

Who knows….maybe Amy will be representing the USA at the Olympics?!

First comment! WINNER, WINNER!!! :)

I’m feeling tired but need to log some miles after work. Also – I’m getting SO EXCITED for the 2012 TC Marathon!! I want to start training NOW!!!!!

Reply

Ahhh. I love this segment you are doing. My last miles are easy taper miles for my 20k this weekend.

I haven’t had any chocolate today! Shocking….I need to fix that :)

Anyone eaten something chocolate lately that was delicious?

— Christmas week included a box of Sees chocolate, plus birthday cake!

What were your last miles…..good miles or bad miles?

— Yesterday’s run was meant to be 10 miles outside; ended up being 3 outside before Garmin died, then 2 on treadmill. Just could not handle the treadmill beyond that. I’ll have to figure out a way around it, in case this kind of thing happens again.

Anyone else tired today?

— YES. And lazy. Today is meant to be 4.5 on treadmill w/hill intervals but will have to see what it turns out to be when I get there. I’m also still fighting hamstring/PF pains.

Reply

I am exhausted today!
My last miles were good miles but tiring miles done last night. I think “tired” is a theme lately. ;)
I had a Trader Joe’s chocolate granola bar that was a good afternoon snack today.
I hope you found some chocolate too!

Reply

I will have some delicious chocolate soon….after I down my apple ;)

I had a good run today, until mile 5.something…my knee started to hurt. Boo. Oh well, bad mile after that. But good miles until that!

That rocks that sh’es going after her dreams, I hope to see her in the Olympics!!

I haven’t had anything chocolate lately, but my husband and I were craving something sweet and I found all the ingredients for oatmeal cookies in our cupboards. We had most of them eaten by the next day. This morning I went for a 4 mile run at 5:00 AM with my running buddies. It felt like 7 outside so while the miles weren’t hard, my legs were frozen! And yes, first day back at work after an early morning run = very tired!

Reply

I just licked the brownie batter bowl clean :)
Then, 30 minutes later – I ate a brownie. Obviously.

Reply

I am now OBSESSED with chocolate that includes sea salt. What could be better?
Last miles (yesterday) were good miles!
Not too terribly tired. But then again, I sleep until pretty much whenever I want.

Good miles :-D And waking up at 5:45 was terrible!! I hate the first day back to work-especially when you have to wake up early to stop at the DMV-blech!!

Reply

HELLO! I started following your blog a few months ago and I LOVE IT, but this is my first comment.
I had THE hardest time waking up today. Just 4 days off and my body was used to waking up at 12pm (pathetic I know)
I ran a FAST 3.5 miles today (all of the carb/chinese food loading the day before)
but I can’t stop eating at work today! starving.
i just want sleep and more vacation :)

Reply

MARIA!! Thank you so much for your comment, you made my day. WAY TO GO getting up early and getting your run on. Um….don’t worry, we were waking up every day at 11. Have an amazing day!

Reply

I ate chocolate cake on my birthday….the 31st :) Gooo me…several days without!!
Girl, I don’t know hwo you do it!! My last two were TM miles yesterday and I was SO sososososo bored. I need to watch Gossip Girl…but there isn’t a DVD at the gym. Hummm…. maybe this is my chance to con the husband into an iPad!

Reply

My dark chocolate oatmeal this morning, it was delicious!

Reply

I’m sick today :( which really sucks because I wanted to workout, but with a sinus cold you aren’t supposed to. Booo.

Happy new years beautiful lady <3

Reply

Yes. Tired today after a busy race weekend + early spin class this morning! But I got a massage yesterday so that helped. :-)

Speaking of sugar, I am currently craving candy corn. Again. Sigh.

It’s funny because after I read ur post about Davila I started contemplating driving down to Houston to watch the trials!

Reply

I just snuck a peanut butter cup out of the hubby’s stocking, don’t tell him : D

Reply

Lets go watch the trials!!! HOW FUN WOULD THAT BE?!?!?

Reply

I’m in. Seriously, you better not be kidding about this.

Reply

Let me know if either one of you go! Blogger meetup!

Reply

That would be so so fun!!! I will talk to Billster.

That’s a really good mantra. Just like some days you run feeling like you are sailing across the ground and others your legs feel like concrete! It’s nice to know the elites deal with the same things.

I have had good miles so far this year. More in love with running than ever :)

And I ate dark chocolate chips last night that I snuck from the baking section of the pantry. mmm.

Reply

My last miles were very good and very hilly! I felt strong. :)

Amy Hastings is amazing! I didn’t really know too much about her until this post. Looks like I have some more googling to do. She has a killer body too! I want to look that strong and lean. :) New Year’s Resolution: Look like Amy Hastings?? Maybe.

Reply

tired today…….yes.

last chocolate was banana chocolate chip bread that a co-worker brought in. By slice 3 I just picked out the chocolate chips because the chocolate was still tasting amazing even though i was full.

No miles today……rest day……and loving every bit of it because, well, read first sentence.

I’m up in Michigan right now and their specialty is cherries….so then you have people who make chocolate covered cherries and they are delicious!!! I have some being shipped home to me and I am packing some in my suitcase!

I’m so with you – the Olympic trials is so exciting…it’s crazy that some of these people can literally run almost twice as fast as me!

Hi Janae!

First post…..have been stalking your blog for a while now. Your posts on the trials are great. I actually get to run in them. I qualified at Boston last year (not sure how since my PR was 2:55 and I had only been running on the treadmill). Anyway, I wanted to let you know you are very inspiring and I know you will be able to do a sub 3 no problem!

Reply

HEY MEG!! Thank you so much for commenting and YOU are my hero…2:55!?!?! WOW!! I want to pick your brain!!

Reply

Janae, I would love for you to pick my brain! Here is a little bit of my background. http://www.minotdailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/554210/Grindall-going-for-four.html?nav=5016 Email me any comments or questions. My husband thinks we are definitely related because we both carrry snacks in our purse and have a love for candy!

Reply

Wait…you ran a 2:45 in Boston?!?! I LOVED reading that article. Can I get your email?

I just read this article. Meg, you are amazing!!!

Reply

I ran 3.12 miles this morning and they were not good. It was super hard to get my legs going and keep them going. I just wanted it to end. So frustrating! But we all have bad days/runs, right?
I can’t imagine running so fast that you’d do a marathon in 2:27. That’s so insane! Especially in your debut! Hats off!

Reply

The last miles I did were from Bakersfield to Sacramento. Bad miles. Most definitely bad. ;)

Reply

You are tempting me to drive down to Houston for the Trials.
I was sper tired this morning and went back to bed after I got the kids off to school. I know, my life is tough.
I had great miles today. I did a fake mile workout (my new favorite) and I totally owned it.

Reply

I had some trader joes chocolate covered toffee today. Amaaaazzzing- and like 40% of your daily saturated fat if you eat 3 teensy bits. Totally worth it though!
I ran 4 on the dreadmill tonight on legs that have put in 22 miles in the last 3 days. (that’s a lot for me) Things felt good though! It was a good one!
I was soooo tired last week but I seem to have recovered!
Hope you wake up easier tomorrow…!

Reply

I bought trail mix today just so I could eat the peanut m&ms out of it. I ran 5 miles on sat that were eh and today I was a zombie!!

Reply

Snacked on plain dark chocolate chips.. sometimes simple is delicious. First day back at work = candy is a must.

Last few miles weren’t good but they were on a treadmill, since I discovered the love of running outdoors treamill running bores me so I try to focus more on speed work and walk a little in between :)

SO tired! Got here at 6:30am and they’re just now letting me leaveeeeee! Gotta go run errands and get food for dinner! BTW those girls are CRAZY CRAZY fast omg! such inspiration… even if I look from afar..

Reply

Totally gives me chills reading about the marathoners…wish someone would scoop me up and train me for a year to run 5 min miles. in my dreams. thanks for writing about it!
I just ate dark chocolate with mint – love the dark chocolate. and I think I am chronically tired – my son gets up too early to speak of, or I get up too early to speak of to hit the gym. keeps me on my toes!

Reply

Super tired. And I still haven’t hit the gym yet. My last 10k was super slow because I was sore from weight training and whatnot.

That’s absolutely CRUSHING about your chocolate bar.

Reply

After weeks and weeks of terrible runs (ok, less than great runs since any run is still a good thing… stay positive…) I finally had a pretty decent run today and I did it first thing in the morning, which is my favorite time to run. And, also means that I’m sleepy. I’ve been making cookies out of chick peas (because I need to make healthy cookies since I eat dessert three times a day) and so I just had a chocolate chip chickpea cookie. It really is WAY better than it sounds :)

Reply

I am so happy that you had a better run today wahoo!! That is awesome. CHICK PEAS…that is awesome, you might have to send me the recipe!

Reply

Those really are good. So good I ate way to many of them! :)

Reply

I thought of you while eating my symphony bar today. The serving sizes are SO messed up. How are you supposed to stop eating the deliciousness to get more than one serving out of it?? I’d like to know!

Reply

Thanks for thinking of me, seriously those things are so messed up.

Reply

haven’t had any exceptionally wonderful chocolate as of late, but i did make some frango mint brownies for nye that are still lingering around my house. and even with all of them that i’ve been eating for the past few days, i felt like i was dancing on a cloud on my 11 miler today.

Reply

how exciting to be an olympic hopeful!! i hope she makes it!

i havent been eating much candy lately bc unforunately i have a canker sore the size of my fist…probably from all the candy i WAS eating. i hate canker sores..they are literally the worst thing ever.

Reply

i loved seeing how awesome amy did at her marathon!! i hope she has an awesome race in Houston. :)

i’m sorry that there was no yummy chocolate waiting for u, let us have a moment of silence. :(

Reply

Oh man I had forgotten about Amy Hastings – love her!! I’ll definitely be rooting for her as well….man I wish the trials were on TV!! My last miles were bad, I think these stupid orthotics are doing me more harm than good!

Ugh I’m sorry about your chocolate. I feel like that happens to me much more frequently, I’ll forget that I finished something and come home looking forward to it and…oh. sadness. But I’m drinking some dark chocolate hot cocoa spiked with orange extract right now…it tastes JUST like one of those chocolate oranges that you break open into “slices”! :-D

Reply

I’m so tired today! I just keep reminding myself that tomorrow is already Wednesday—thank goodness! :) Have a great week!

Reply

I go back to work next week and am dreading the early wake up call. Your candy bar story is tragic. Sounds like something I would do!

Reply

Ugh! It was rough this morning for me too!!! I have tried the whole “exercise with your eyes shut” thing, but it doesn’t work too well trying to follow a DVD. I definitely feel like a zombie when I first start.

My last miles where 2 weeks ago!! I ran on a cold windy day and got a terrible chest cold. Doesn’t make sense to run out in it again until I stop coughing. I am limited to dvds now, but that’s better than nothing.

I just had some mint dark chocolate covered espresso beans from TJ’s. YUM!

Reply

my last miles were good because I was running around Charleston, SC where I went to college, bad because it was FREEZING and my legs needed some serious stretching

Reply

I just polished off some chocolate covered banana chips that were phenomenal. Mmmm:)

Reply

One of our vendors brought in the BEST chocolate truffles ever for New Years…Delicia is the company that makes them, and they are incredible! They have milk chocolate with white chocolate filling, hazelnut, and dark chocolate with roasted cocoa nibs in the filling…I ate way more than my share.

My last 3.2 miles were really hard on me…I over indulged on New Years (on more than just the truffles), and then I had an allergic asthma attack thanks to my new cat, and couldn’t breath that great. It took me almost 50 sometimes grueling minutes, but after I felt great!

I’m actually not tired today. I worked 3p-3a last night, but my husband was home to get the kids to school, so I was able to sleep a straight 8. Working again tonight, so tomorrow will probably be a tired day.

Reply

I’ve had so much delicous chocolate lately: mily chocolate orange, ghirardelli carmeal squares, peppermint bark. So much delicousness! I didn’t run today, but I had a great run yesterday. And tonight, I am SO tired.

Reply

I’m loving your Olympic trials spotlights. It will help to be more informed about all the athletes. I didn’t know very much about Amy Hastings. Last chocolatey thing I ate was a handful of chocolate chips from the freezer about 5 minutes ago, but the mini kit kats I had after lunch were better. My last miles were good, but tired too.

Reply

Chocolate-covered macadamia nuts from the big island of Hawaii. Horrifically addicting. I vacationed there last month and brought 6 bags of them back with me, thinking it would be plenty. Not the case! Next time I am going to bring an extra suitcase and fill it up with macadamia nuts. The customs inspectors and luggage x-rayers will be appalled, but at least they won’t be nailing me for having any liquids greater than 3 ounces per container!

Reply

Best chocolatey thing I’ve had recently is hot choc- that’s either very sad or the hot choc is very good…fortunately the latter!

Reply

I’m not normally a big chocolate person but there are some Ghiradelli truffles at work that I swear I can hear whispering to me at all hours of the day. It is sad how little self control I have around them. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this struggle!

Reply

OMG!
It was so hard to get up and moving yesterday and today. The only thing that got me through was knowing that I was leaving for FL tomorrow!

I am enjoying the olympic highlights. I will be out of town for the trials, but one of my favorite stories is walking into my boyfirend’s house (I lived in a diff state at the time) and his roommate was watching the olympic trials. Just then I looked up and saw a high school classmate of mine (who I ran CC with/behind for many years) running in the trials. He qualified and it was super fun to watch him at the olympics!

Reply

PS I am slightly obsessed with the olympics and as a young child/preteen thought that I would be an olympian one day : )

Reply

I’m thinking of the sea salt chocolates that are waiting for me in my desk at work. It’s the only thing that is motivating me to finish getting ready for work!

Reply

My last run was 7 miles and it felt pretty good considering I’m sick.

Getting up this week has been miserable! I need to get back on schedule.

Reply

Holy crud the best chocolate EVER is the Dark Chocolate Bar/Caramel w/ black sea salt from Trader Joe’s. I got 2 in my stocking from my mom for Christmas and I just tried it today after lunch. AMAZING!

Reply

My chocolate fixation lately has been on the coffee fudge brownie ice cream that is in our freezer and is also quickly disappearing :P Def feeling tired today, I’m a bronchosaurus [sp?!]- aka have bronchitis, blah…

Reply

i am BEAT today. I literally fell asleep in the nail salon.

Reply

Chocolate ice cream and chocolate m&m pretzels!

I don’t even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good. I don’t know who you are but definitely you are going to a famous blogger if you are not already ;) Cheers!
