My Last Day of Vacation Highlights

You know you have a weird brain when one of the highlights of your day is buying a 20 lb bag of brown rice for $13.   We have been out of rice for way too long and I can’t wait for the return of stir-fry’s and my complicated rice and bean with hot sauce recipe.

Okay, the BIGGEST highlight of my day was seeing these faces:

Photo 7 copy 3

One of my high school bff’s lives in Hawaii (I don’t know how she ever got over the emotional aspect of moving away from me) and is in town for the holidays.  I went over and hung out with her and her family….I felt like I was 17 again but then got confused and remembered I was an adult because she is pregnant with her THIRD.  PS right before she found out she was pregnant she ran a 20-mile race in 3 hours….SPEEDY BULLET!

Another reason I love her: she brings me the best treats.

I came back to my parent’s house because Billy was there watching sports for the 28th day in a row (FYI I am exaggerating).  There were some frozen pancakes and I just heated them up for dinner and grabbed a few things from the fridge and went to town.

IMG 1422

Since I hadn’t had any carbs yet;) I had cinnamon raisin toast.  Am I the only one that would almost rather eat simple foods like toast or cereal over eating super fancy food?

Thanks for adding me on Daily Mile. I have friends now wahooo!!!  Daily Mile is like facebook for running nerds and I am obsessed.

What are some things in your freezer right now?

-We have chicken, tortillas, bread, NO ICE CREAM (rude), corn dogs and mahi-mahi.

Are you a rice eater?  What do you eat it with?

Are you still in touch with your high school bff’s?

Ever been to Hawaii?

-Yep, once with my family and then another time for a semester of college.  I think I am due for another trip asap.

There is way too much in our freezer right now. But some highlights are scones, potstickers and english muffins.
I like rice. But mostly eat it with Chinese take-out! Hahaha.
I am still in touch with ONE BFF from High School. She is the only thing worth keeping around from that place.
Never been to Hawaii. Such a long trip from the East Coast.

Man those pancakes look so good right about now..I’m with you on the simple foods! NOthing tastes good as a plain pb & banana sandwich! I am still in touch with my childhood bffs and am sure I’m going to stay in touch for the rest of my life! I love sushi so in that sense, I guess I love rice too!

Reply

Lots of food in the freezer, various items of course.

I love plain food like you.

I’ve been to Kona, Hawaii as I did the Ironman there in 2005..loved it!!!

Since I moved to the USA, I do not keep in touch with my bff’s from HS. All though I do follow them on Facebook.

Reply

Seriously, YOU are my hero….an Ironman in KONA….WOW!

I heart Hawaii. It is my true home and planning on moving there in exactly 3 years!
My husband used to live in Oahu (military), we got engaged and married there. The words can’t explain how much I love this place (Big Island is my home by heart). It’s just a very striking feeling every time i go there – almost like the island is calling my name (btw they have Ewa Beach in Oahu, how cool;-) Have you ever had that feeling J? It’s like you KNOW you BELONG there.

Reply

You HAVE to move there! You were engaged and married that…I am so jealous. Ewa beach was named after you?!?! I can’t wait to hear all about when you move back!

Reply

I hope you have a wonderful first day back! I love dailymile too, I am addicted!! I love keeping up with my mileage!

Hawaii: YES! Take me back plz! My husband’s family lives in Kailua Kona on the big Island. Hoping to get there this year!

Enjoy your last day!

I am totally a simple eats girl too! None of that froo froo stuff for me–just give me the Frosted Flakes and some chocolate chips straight from the bag.

Freezer = 2 huge bags of broccoli from Sam’s club, chicken, tilapia, freezie-pops, turkey burgers, and wedding cake. :D

I’m actually not a huge rice fan!

We went to Maui for our Honeymoon! I loved it and want to live there forever. Except I might miss the snow a little bit.

I have a feeling that daily mile is going to be an EPIC time waster for me (but in a good way… maybe!!)

Reply

Yep, I have already spend way too much time on it ha. Have an amazing day!

Reply

Haha I love daily mile, although I haven’t gotten to run much since I hurt my foot and now I’m visiting a friend, so my profile looks a little sad. And I do still have friends from high school, only one who is married and pregnant though! The rest of us are still wandering souls!

Reply

I have never been to Hawaii but would LOVE to go! I am sure it is amazing!

Brown rice is a staple in our home! I love mixing a bowl of brown rice with sauteed veggies and shrimp and a tad bit of stir fry sauce. SO fast, easy, healthy and delicious too!

Reply

Thats a whole lotta rice! Im not really a rice fan.

And i love that your eating greens with pancakes lol.

Reply

My BFF has been my BFF since Junior High – that’s 17 years! That’s crazy. We might not talk every day or see each other often, but she’s still my best friend.

I love rice in stir-frys and in stuffed peppers!

Reply

I don’t have any ice cream either right now! Shocking….! I would love to go to Hawaii… :D

Reply

I stocked up my freezer last week with suppers for busy nights, so we have homemade veggie burgers, turkey meatballs, butternut squash chili, more butternut squash, then granola bars and cornbread muffins I made. Plus the regular stuff – frozen fruit, peas, corn and chicken.
I eat quinoa more than rice but would love to find a bag of quinoa that big!
Yes I am still in touch with all my HS BFF’s :)
Never been to Hawaii BUT we are thinking of going this November!

Reply

I wish I’ve been to Hawaii! I need to add that to my vacation list.

I generally don’t eat a lot of rice, but I’m with you, I’d much rather eat simple foods than prepare something fancy!

Reply

Chicken, bread, ice cream, frozen peanut butter chocolate balls, green beans, muffins, fruit, and waffles occupy my freezer right now. I love rice and could eat it with almost any meal. Yes, I still keep in touch with my high school BFF even though she lives in East Asia right now. All of our kids are the same age and our parents live 5 min from each other. We went to Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Oahu for our Anniversary and can’t wait to go back.

Reply

I actually have ice cream in our freezer right now. I think my husband and I are currently in a race to see who can finish it first without the other person knowing. So far, he is winning. My favorite ice cream combo of the moment is moose tracks with bananas on top. The bananas make it healthy, right???

Reply

I have ice… and one Amy’s Organic burrito.. haha I think that’s about it!
I like rice! It’s my go to carb for dinner.
My high school best friends are still my best friends! I love them! They all live 3,000 miles away but we keep in touch and when I go back home it’s like I never left :)
I’ve been to Hawaii twice and LOVE it!!!

Reply

My freezer has chicken, frozen yogurt (mmm!!), and lottttts of frozen veggies right now!

Reply

meatballs, sesame seeds, vegetables to puree for ittybit, organic go-gurts for bigger ittybit, ICE. I chew it. weird, I know.

I have been to Hawaii, and I love it, but my hubs’ fam is from Hainan Island, which is like the Hawaii of China, and I ADORE it there. So beautiful, and his family is there, which is lovely.

Again, hubs is Chinese, we eat rice with EVERYTHING.

Reply

a 2lb bag of LOBSTER TAIL chunks from Costco!!!! So excited to use those! Hopefully they’re as good as I imagine… it feels fancy.

Just made a huge batch of rice yesterday for the week! I cook it in my rice pot cooker with seasoning and a can of tomato juice and use the steam tray on top for veggies – I usually get the frozen kind, broccoli and spinach and bell peppers and ‘nuke them for a bit in the microwave before adding them to the steam tray then they cook while the rice is cooking and once it’s done you just mix everything together! OMG that huge bag of rice was super cheap………. should I get over my fear of buying in bulk? I think it’s just hard when I have a tiny apartment pantry…

My high school BFF lives in Colorado but I love to visit her when I can!

Been to Hawaii ONCE but I feel like I was too young to TRULY appreciate it… now my Dad surprised me and we’re going on a family trip there in June!! I’m so psyched! and even though I’m an adult they’re letting the bf and I stay in the Villa for the small price of cooking dinner for everyone – definitely a win! Now I just have to decide what to prepare :-D

Reply

freezer: berries, bananas and quiche
where has daily mile been all my life? I just discovered it like 2 days ago. love it. sent you a request :)

Reply

AHHH WE ARE DAILYMILE FRIENDS NOW WAHOOO!!! This is so exciting, how did we live without it?

Reply

Our freezer has about 4 containers of ice cream, veggies, soups, and chocolate. Also fish and other miscellaneous meats. I LOVE to eat rice and beans mixed with salsa. Yumm-o. I keep in touch (barely) with some of my high school BFFS, but not really :-/

I want to go to Hawaii. Take me with you? Okay, thanks! PS… I definitely love simple foods > fancy foods. I feel like I can’t eat them with my fingers and what fun is it if you can’t play with your food?

Reply

THOSE PANCAKES look so delicious and fluffy. gimme, gimme!

and I still haven’t been to Hawaii. it’s on my to-do list for when I’m rich. ;)

Reply

My freezer is sad sad sad. Our fridge died about a week ago, and we were only able to save a few things. Grocery bill is going to be ginormous for the next few trips to get everything replaced. Right now we have a huge bag of broccoli, chicken breast, Swai fish, a monster bag of fixed fruit for my smoothies, shrimp and some frozen peas. *sigh* now I’m hungry.

I’ve never been to Hawaii, but since I have a small (okay HUGE) fear of flying over open water, it could be difficult for me to ever get there. lol

I’m also addicted to Dailymile. I’m glad you joined (and have one or two {hundred} friends now). I was really looking forward to adding this morning’s mileage and watch the little ticker go up, but I had an epic alarm clock failure. Wasn’t pretty. Hopefully I can squeeze time tonight to still go to the gym. :)

Reply

AHHH RACHEL, I have missed you DEARLY!! How is life? I need updates. BOO to your freezer dying, that is awful. I didn’t know you were afraid of flying over water?!?! SO HAPPY we are Dailymile friends now. Have an amazing day at work and then the gym!

In my freezer: homemade banana wheat waffles (oh yeah), frozen leftovers of healthy sloppy joes, Chocolate Cake ice cream!!, and skinny cows. You asked at an excellent time!!!!

I love rice with beans. And like avocado. And maybe hummus. Who knows. Vegetables too!!!

I’m still in touch with my four high school besties. I love them so much. I talk to some of them almost every day (yeah, gchat!!).

And I WANT to go to Hawaii!!!!!!! Ever since I saw Skinny Runner in that marathon, I’ve been dreaming! :)

I want those waffles so bad! That sounds amazing and so does the chocolate cake ice cream. Good call on the hummus! I think you need to get to Hawaii ASAP!

Omg, i might be moving to Hawaii so if I do…come visit? haha! although I can’t even get you to visit me in CA when you’re here! I’ll give you chocolate mac nuts too!

simple food is the best, i agree!

i have never been to hawai’i but would love to, it looks fantastic.

in my freezer… probably sweetcorn, coconut, ice and bananas :)

Reply

I love easy-schmeezy dinners, especially in the winter. However, when I make a “real” meal my husband gives me so much positive feedback……I think wow I most have fed him a lot of grilled cheese lately.

Hope the first day back hasn’t been too bad. A shock to my system with an early morning wake-up…….but seeing the kiddos has been kind of fun.

Reply

I can’t believe you are back at the same time since you got out later…booo!!! Ha, thanks for the reminder of how delicious grilled cheese is. Have a great day Erica and I am sure your students are THRILLED to see you!

Reply

Love me some rice with black beans and salsa!

Reply

I do love fancy food, but have to agree that cinnamon raisin toast is superior to all other toast..s… yeah I’m bad with pluralization.

Reply

We have otter pops, a bag of frozen vegetables, two things of frozen spinach and wheat flour.

I am not a rice fan, unless I am getting a burrito bowl at Chipotle.

I want to go to hawaii so bad.

Reply

Fun fun!! Boo for going back to reality today. I seriously cried while driving to work (I am not dramatic at all!) We need to start hanging out again. Fro-yo, PF, running together. I seriously miss you my friend.

Love you!!

Reply

Oh I would love to spend a semester in Hawaii. I’m looking into it!

Reply

Never been to Hawaii. I have an uncle there that I’ve NEVER met because moved there and never came back to Texas.

I love brown rice! But I like basmati rice better…esp w/ black beans.

Don’t have much in my freezer except frozen tilapia, veggies and some other things I should probably throw out because they’ve been in there too long.

Reply

I love making Chipotle’s rice with cilantro and lime. Yum!

My husband and I went to Hawaii for Christmas last year. This year we went to San Francisco (we’ve started a “vacation alone, family after” tradition for the holidays) and the whole time we were super nostalgic for the islands.

Reply

Hmmm, now that I think about it, our freezer is full! Ice cream (X2), Italian ice, blueberry pancakes, ciabatta bread, VitaTops, pizzas, tortellini, chicken sausages, pork chops, chicken tenders, veggie burgers, coffee, and a bunch of veggies…

Love brown rice with chicken sausage + shrimp + bell peppers + celery + salsa… Easy-peasy, knock-off jambalaya!

Yup, I see some of my high school BFF’s on a weekly basis- so happy I moved home after college :D

Reply

I don’t know how you are going to eat that huge bag of rice!!!

Coffee and Pecan Praline icecream, ice cream sandwiches, 3 different kinds of pizzas, raviolis, lots of frozen veggies, lasagna, chinese noodles, bacon, sausage, hamburger meat, chicken, lean pockets…….oh the list goes on!!

P.S. Your food combos always amaze me. Complete randomness.

Reply

I love rice and cinnamon raisin bread! While I like fancy foods every once in a while because I like to try new things, I love my staples. You know they’re always going to be good!

Reply

Love your random meals! ha!
I think DAILYMILE needs NEEDS to have an APP!! It would make it WAY more user friendly.. don’t your think?

Reply

That cinnamon raisin toast looks so good! Especially since it’s lunch time here and I’m quite hungry :)
-In our freezer we have frozen pizza (that would be all the husband’s doing), chicken breasts, steamfresh vegetables and a lasagna my Mom made.
-I LOVE rice. I make the easiest chicken fried rice in the world-brown rice, chicken breast pieces, steamfresh veggies-the packet with the water chestnuts-2 fried eggs and soy sauce. That’s it.
-I’m not in touch with a lot of ppl from high school, mostly just my college friends. We’ll talk on FB from time to time, and several of them did come to my wedding, but it’s way casual.
-Never been to Hawaii, but would love to!

Reply

“facebook for running nerds”….THAT’S why I love DM so much!! lol I never thought of it that way but you’re so right!

OMG I’m totally with you on the simple foods thing – and there’s literally nothing better than cinnamon raisin toast with butter. man I wish I had some cinnamon raisin toast so I could make that! right now in my freezer I’ve got some mint chocolate chip ice cream and homemade muffins aaand lots of veggies like peas and beans…and some chicken breasts and veggie burgers!

Reply

What’s in my freezer – salmon, bacon, veggie burgers, berries, corn on the cob from the summer, veggie blueberry pancakes for the kids, Pineapple Banana Muffins, various frozen veggies, and bread.

Thanks for the addiction to DM! A new way to waste endless amounts of time!

Reply

In my freezer: chicken, chicken, more chicken, tilapia, and, oh yeah, some chicken.

My husband should have been Chinese because he likes to eat rice with everything. Chicken (obviously), pork, beef, fish…doesn’t matter.

My BFF and I met on the first day of first grade and we are still best friends. I am in touch with a lot of my HS friends, too, thanks to Facebook.

Never been to Hawaii. My husband was supposed to take me there for our 10th anniversary…we’ve been married almost 14 years and we still haven’t gone. Maybe for our 20th?

Reply

I have 3 boxes of waffles, 2 bags of frozen pasta and chicken.

Is daily mile really that awesome? I already track my mileage on Nike+ and mapmyrun. Nike is automatic with my watch. I like mapmyrun because I can keep track of other workouts too. I have been considering getting an account with daily mile, but i don’t want to give up my other two accounts and 3 seems a bit excessive.

Reply

I want to go to Hawaii SO bad!! How fun she came to visit :)

In freezer: frozen berries, bread, tofu sausages, frozen yogurt, mixed veggies

Reply

I’m not really in touch with my high school, bff, besides Facebook, which isn’t really even that much.

I’ve never been to Hawaii. Dan and I are supposed to go for a week in April for a wedding

Reply

FRIEND!!!! i miss you so much! hope you had a wonderful holiday season! i am headed over to add you on daily mile right this second :)

Reply

there isn;t a day that goes by where I don’t long for Hawaii. I’d love to be able to live there one day.

Reply

Ugh, Hawaii… take me there now please! 20 degrees isn’t cutting it for me right now.

Reply

We have vitatops, frozen fruit, frozen veggies, LOTS of frozen peppers, salmon, and probably some really really really old stuff pushed way in the back. :)

I eat a little rice – mainly with sushi or a stir fry.

I keep in touch with a couple of my high school friends. Even if we don’t see each other or talk regularly, when we get together it’s like we’re back in high school again (except that they all have kids ha).

I went on a family vacation to Hawaii when I was in 7th grade, and I went there for my senior trip in high school. I hope to get back there in the next few years!

Reply

Why would you ever leave Hawaii? OK, it’s 70 here or probably 80, so I can’t complain. I just read the girl above w/ the 20 degrees. :/

Come by and read Erin’s inspiring story, then for sure check out her blog to read all the amazing things happening to her right now!! So cool.

Have a fab day.

Reply

I love rice. i love the smell of rice cooking. When I cook too much (which I always do) I make rice pancakes. Combine 1 cup of cooked rice (cooled) with a beaten egg. Place in a preheated, oiled skillet and cook like a pancake. They are good with salsa or even better, maple syrup. Yum.

Reply

Mary Ann that sounds amazing!! Thank you so much for the great idea, I can’t wait to try it out!

Reply

I get excited about things like that too!!
I just went food shopping, so literally everything!
I don’t eat it thaaat much but mostly sushi or sitr fries.
I just moved in with one of mine, and I still talk to my others. I’m only 19 though :) I wanna go to Hawaii sooo bad!

Reply

Did you go to BYU Hawaii? I went spring semester 2006 and it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I need to go back. asap.

Reply

I am Chinese-American so rice was a daily staple in my house growing up. When greeting folks in Mandarin and asking them how they are doing, you ask them what literally translates to “Have you eaten rice yet?” (my non-Chinese friends would hear this and ask me what they said, and I would give them the exact translation. I received many confused looks).

Reply

In my freezer-veggie burgers, veggies, Edy’s double fudge brownie ice cream, frozen blueberry waffles, ice cream cake, a frozen snowman cupcake, steamed veggie bags…

Not a rice eater anymore.. but have had it stir-fry style with vegetables and balsamic.. in a burrito, as a side for orange chicken … have yet to do the whole morning mix it with milk–rice pudding..not sure id everrr be into that.

HAWAII sounds warm and nice.
