An interesting run…..

Quite the scary run I had this morning.  For the past few weeks the shelf that holds my precious computer has been rather wobbly. I have been nagging (does it count as nagging if I was doing it in my head and forgot to actually tell him in real life?) Billy to fix the shelf (once again, in my head) but it never got done (yep, definitely my fault).

Today it broke at mile 1.8.  My life flashed before my eyes as I had to grab the shelf with one hand and my computer with the other while I was running to prevent it from crushing me.

Luckily, I was able to stand my computer up on the treadmill and somewhat see the screen.  Heaven forbid I run without my favorite tv shows.  The computer covered the screen of the treadmill which made the time fly by and me go longer than I was planning for.  Having enough time to get ready and look like a real person is totally overrated.

Photo

2nd scary thing that occurred:  a spider came down from the ceiling.  It was just a miniature one but it came fast and looked deadly.  No picture, I was too busy fighting for my life.  The joys of a home built in 1908.

Wow, I am good at making things sound a lot more dramatic than they really are but anytime something scary happens when it is still dark = way more scary.

——————–

Ever wonder what I eat throughout the day?  I know you said no to that question but oh well.  Here’s what I am eating this week:

Bfast: greek yogurt with cut up grapes and peaches.

Snacks that I eat throughout the day: 2 fried eggs with some ham lunch meat (container above yogurt), apples (I already ate one of them before the picture) with pb, clementines, and pineapple.

Lunch:  A salad with veggies, grilled chicken and ranch dressing.

Dessert: TJ’s pb cups and skittles (Billy told me he was going to take me for a treat on Saturday and I chose to go to the store and get a ginormous bag of skittles….very wise Janae) and a packet of oatmeal or microwave popcorn is usually eaten at some point.

Photo copy

After school snack aka what I look forward to all day long is cottage cheese with grapes.  PS you would need skittles daily at 2 pm too if you taught teenagers all day and don’t drink caffeine.

I may attempt some lifting of weights at some point within the next 6 hours but I am not making any promises.

———————————————————-

Ya know how I am a drivers ed teacher? I wanted to share what a student made after we talked about texting and driving.   Yes, this is a running blog but I am passionate about being safe on the roads…..no texting and driving!
Photo copy 2

Thummies is definitely a word….just go with it;)

———————————————————–

What’s in your ‘lunch sack’ this week?

Had any scary things happen on your run lately?  Have you ever run on a treadmill with ZERO entertainment…no music, no tv, no friends to talk to?

-Never.  I always have at least 3 distractions at once.

When was the last time you ran on the treadmill?  What is your maximum time or distance on that machine?  What about the elliptical?

-As far as the elliptical….30 minutes and I am spent, it hurts my brain to go any longer.

sometimes a mile is too much for a treadmill. I can handle 10 if there is a good movie on the TV. I am ready for warmer weather where a long run is more pleasant. I got an 18miler on the schedule and I don’t think I can do it on the treadmill. Boring!

Reply

Yeah….do the 18-miler outside for sure!!! I hear ya, sometimes I realize in the first minute that I will not be able to handle the treadmill and push STOP!

Always bring my lunch— this week turkey sandwiches loaded with lots of meat bit of cheese, Greek yogurts, almonds/pistachios, fiber one bars I just bought, apples and my vice–diet soda! I LOVE turkey sandwiches!! E

Reply

Mmmmm a turkey sandwich sounds REALLY good right now. How are the fiber bars…what brand?

Reply

You are so funny. I HATE the treadmill! I like the elliptical. Haven’t tried the bars yet–I had a coupon! I normally don’t buy that stuff. e

Reply

I also made the chili tonight–yummo

That is how I watch TV on my treadmill everyday, LOL. I guess I could get a shelf but I just stick it on the TM. You can’t see the screen, which kind of stinks BUT it also means you don’t focus on the time or mileage which is kind of nice.

The longest I ever ran was 18 miles on the treadmill (or 16 — I can’t even remember now). That was the last run I had before my tendinitis issue stopped me from running the Chicago marathon.

Reply

You are so right….the time went by so fast because I couldn’t see a thing ha. I do think you need a shelf though;) I will send you one!! WAHOOOO 18 miles….do you think doing that long run on the treadmill caused the tendinitis?

Reply

I really need you to pack my lunches for me, ok? I crave salads all the time come lunch…I think I would eat healthier and save money if you’d do that for me. :) I once had a spider crawl across the wall while I was on the TM, and I was so freaked out…hate them!!

Reply

I totally will….we should do it together on Sundays:) I NEED TO SEE YOU!

Reply

Yes, you do. :) Did my text last week get lost in the black-hole of telephone waves? I’d love to set something up soon!

Reply

AHHHH I am the worst at texting! I am trying to put a dinner together for next Thursday night…you in?

Reply

YES!

Reply

My lunch is always totally random – whatever happens to be in the fridge! I ran 6 on the treadmill today, with some stairmaster – the most I’ve done is 16 and I regularly run with no entertainment. pretty boring. I think the most I’ve done on the elliptical is probably an hour. your lunch “sack” looks fantastic! great variety:-)

Reply

NO ENTERTAINMENT….teach me how you do it! No music?

Reply

I gotta say, I can’t handle more than 3 miles on the treadmill. I GET SO BORED! And I just really don’t like the elliptical. Actually, I’m pretty bad about indoor cardio in general unless it is swimming, spin class, or a group ex class. Otherwise, I’d rather be outside :)

Reply

I completely agree….a group class indoors is always a blast and I don’t get bored. Thank goodness it has been a mild winter so we can get out more!

Thummies…WA police are all over drivers who use their phone while driving!

Glad you were coordinated enough EARLY in the AM to catch the falling computer while running! Whew!

I just posted a tabata spring workout today on the mill. I really like breaking my run into smaller part by switching the incline or speed. Happy Monday!! And, yes you need sugar if you’re a teacher!!

Reply

Good for the Washington police, that is awesome! I know…I surprised myself. Your latest post made me sweat just reading it. You are intense and thank you for the special twitter picture…made my day. Not only am I jealous of that picture but I also want your calves asap!

I have been loving gigantic salads for lunch lately. In fact, I think of them as “HRG” salads. A few times a week I chop up a pail of veggies: cucumbers, carrots, scallions, and red peppers are usually included. Every morning, I mix my veggies with a bunch of spinach and top with feta or goat cheese. I keep a bottle of lime/basil dressing at work, and viola! Perfect salad as big as my head! Every day I think I should take a picture and send it to you to make you jealous.

Oatmeal cookies may also make an appearance.

Reply

AHHH I am so happy you are enjoying HRG salads…yours sound way better than mine. Way to go!! YUM, I need to get that dressing and salads should be required to be the size of your head. YOU SHOULD send a picture of it to make me jealous!

Reply

NO TEXTING AND DRIVING!!!! Yes you are so right.

I caught myself doing it the other day, it is SO DUMB….I had a patient who lost her baby (she was 8 months pregnant) because a texting-driver ran into her (and ended up killing himself)! So I always try to remember this when I am tempted to text.

Reply

hahah there are billboards all over the place here that say DRIVE N TXT U B NXT.
It does not make any sense to me. At all. I prefer ‘thumbies’….. I will be writing to my local government representatives.

Most I’ve ever ran on a treadmill was 2 hours. But really, an hour TOPS and I am happy (most of my treamill runs are 40 mins and under). I’ve done 2 hours on the elliptical before… yep i am bonkers. but again, my workouts there tend to be 20-60 minutes max.

lunch this week is: a lot of bananas + yoghurt, super yummy date and walnut bread with PB/nutella, apples x a million, chicken caesar salads, granola bars, jaffas (which you too will get to experience once your package arrives :p), and lots of mini single serve boxes of kid cereal! chyeeeah!

Reply

Your texting example is so perfectly indicative of the inane things in our minds. Made me laugh! But it’s also chilling to think we choose to spend the time typing these things out, while drifting down the road in a 2-ton vehicle. How many close calls will it take? Even checking alerts isn’t good enough, whatever it is, it can wait!

Reply

I’ve thought about using my computer on the treadmill, but things like that story, terrify me into not doing it.

My lunch is always the same, apple, yogurt, bagel, carrots, and a banana all spread throughout the day.

Reply

I don’t know what it is about treadmills, but I feel like when I run on them I am not running the same way as on the ground. Maybe it’s because I have horrible form and overpronate to the max, but something just feels off about it. Like my legs aren’t rotating correctly. Anyway, my point is, the most I’ve ever done is 3 miles. And that’s including a warm-up walk.

My sis knows a girl who killed someone and lost a limb herself, because she was texting behind the wheel. Serious stuff.

Reply

I have to cover the display on my treadmill with a magazine (I don’t ever read it) because I can’t stand to watch the miles/time go by. Oh, and TV is a must, definitely a must!

Reply

I think the most I’ve done on the treadmill was 6.5…and it was a long 6.5 miles. I always have the TV on, plus or minus some music too. I don’t know how people can run on the treadmill with no distractions at all!

Reply

I came across a snake once, it was dead but it totally freaked me out! I hauled back to my house and didn’t go out for 3 days. I still don’t run over sewer drains because I think a snake will jump out and bite me.

Reply

For a full days work I always have fruit, currently apples and strawberrys, Syder pretzel nuggets, a granola bar or string cheese. I got some great blue cheese at Whole Foods so my sandwich of the week is roast beef and blue cheese with spring greens on a crusty roll.

The last time I was on a treadmill was over the summer for 8 miles while I was marathon training. I have only used one 4 times in the past year.

Reply

I’ve been eating a lot of pb&j for lunch lately. Every once in awhile I’ll rediscover my love for it, get obsessed for 3 weeks or so, and then be sick of it. I still have at least a week and half before I get sick of it ;)

No scary runs lately, but when I lived in Alaska I ran into a mama moose with her calf. Definitely the scariest run I’ve ever been on!

Ran 5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. Longest I’ve ever done is 7. Even with my iPod and the tv on, I still get bored out of my mind. Can’t wait for it to warm up around here so I can get outside!

Reply

I ran on the TM today for the first time in about 4 months for 7 miles – a TM distance record for me. The only way to make it bearable is to watch Hulu on the laptop!

Reply

i am obsessed with those TJ’s pb cups. yes i of course got other things out of this post but i will admit i was sidetracked by the sweets ;)

Reply

Over the weekend while running, I was waiting at a stoplight. As I watched the cars go by, I counted at least 15 people texting while driving in less than 1 minute. Scary!

Treadmill running has grown on me in the past year. I’m fine with just music although I need to do intervals to keep myself entertained too.

Reply

I think the longest distance I’ve done on a treadmill is 11 miles. It was a lot, but it was freezing out and I just couldn’t stand the idea of running outside. And as far as the elliptical, I used to be able to go for 45 minutes in college. Now, I’m done after about 20 minutes!

Reply

That sign is so funny! You are lucky your computer didn’t fall and break or anything- that would have been really bad

Reply

my FAVORITE thing to eat this past month is grapes, cut up apple, cottage cheese, and either strawberry or vanilla protein powder all mixed together. YUMMMmmmm :) Talk about protein overload too!;)

Are you sure?!?! I will definitely have to take you up on that offer:)

Reply

oh no – i am glad you and your comp are both ok! haha!

i am with you- cant do more than 30 mins on the elliptical. treadmill on the other hand……i could stay on that baby for hours as long as i have a magazine/tv show/fully charged ipod to keep me entertained!

Reply

HA HA HA HA!!!! Thumbies! I love it!

Reply

I love that you pack your lunch. The big question is, do you remember to bring all the tupperware home? Because I certainly do not…

I did 10 miles on the TM yesterday, it was especially disgusting WA weather. I think I might brave it next time though…it was so terribly boring.

Reply

I’m glad you were able to save your computer and not get hurt!!

Reply

I ran 11 miles on the treadmill this friday! My furthest distance ever, on or off!

Reply

ANd I thought I took a lot of stuff to work to eat ;)

I am glad you are ok!

Running on a treadmill sans distractions is one of my nightmares, although now that I think about it I know I did that in high school before the days of omnipresent internet/ipods – so weird how you can live without something and then become utterly addicted to the point you can’t imagine your life before it!

I’m so glad you were able to save your computer!! That could’ve been seriously tragic.

Reply

i change up lunch most weeks.. last week was kinda an egg sandwich and veggies lunch week and this week is feeling like greek yogurt, almonds, apples and PB :-)

no scary things on my run yet knock on wood! and i dont think i could run on the treadmill without music.. i hope someday to have an ipad so i can watch shows/movies!

i ran on the t-mill last week, and i do at least once a week for interval/speedwork! the longest ive been on one is exactly an hour… the elliptical i hate soo much and cannot last longer than 40 minutes!

Reply

The treadmill is only my friend when I’m pregnant and can’t run so just walk and watch the TV, or when I’m doing intervals. Otherwise, I’d rather run outside. For some reason I’m OK on the elliptical.

I love your lunch! I usually have a nice big salad for lunch, but today I was running late and brought cake and a leftover breakfast burrito!

Reply

I always get in a habit of bringing the same thing for lunch for a few months until I get sick of it. Right now it’s a veggie salad, a pear, and cheese and crackers.

Nothing too scary on treadmill runs lately – a cricket started jumping across the floor yesterday and my dog followed it around the entire time I ran. At least she got some exercise too! I can do the elliptical for about 5 minutes, tops. It feels so weird to me to not lift up my feet! I’ve never been able to do it.

Reply

It is SO, SO, SO funny that you said “lunch sack” in your question, because today I was e-mailing my boyfriend from work (I’m a teacher too) and mentioned something about my lunch box, and he was like “Do you really use a lunch BOX or is it more of a lunch SACK, because it would be really cool if you had a lunch box.” I guess I just always call it a box, even though it is more of a sack, hahaha!

Reply

BAHAHAH I love your conversation…..I don’t think a lunch box would be big enough to carry all of our goodies. Maybe we need to find a big one, that would be awesome!

Reply

I am glad you are okay and that your computer didn’t break.
I am going to be a creeper (again) for a moment. I have the SAME lunch bag. I feel the need to send you a picture :)
I really enjoy exercise machines when I am with friends. If not I have to have music, t.v., or something to read. I won’t last without it.

Reply

So glad you survived the “computer crash”!
My lunch sack consists of peanut butter and jelly my favorite), trail mix, yogurt, and pretzels. Hmmm…I should add some veggies and fruit, huh?
It’s race week for you…yay!

Reply

With how much you run every day, I am surprised you don’t eat way more :) Looks delicious and healthy though!!

My lunches are usually pretty small. I split my meals up more into snacks than anything, so my lunches are usually like a sandwich or a salad with fruit or something along those lines. I prefer to save my appetite for dinner.

Reply

It sounds like a truly terrifying morning. I’m glad you survived with nothing rattled but your nerves!

Happy Monday, Janae!

Lunch sack: Kind bars, several pieces of fruit from students, celery & almond butter mmm, leftover thin crust garlic/feta/basil chicken pizza.

One season when I was training for Arizona RnR marathon in January, I ran three 3 hour runs on a treadmill in between two friends that were training for Arizona too. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be…we had each other, tv, iPods, and we got off on the hour, each hour for a drink and a snack and then proceeded. Ellipical = me no gusta.

Scary on my long run today: I was running down a road under construction and the mud was SO thick that my shoes got sucked in several times and almost stopped me dead. Good thing I was wearing my new Brooks’ gortex Ghost running shoes! They didn’t even get wet, but mud is caked all over them now, boo.

Reply

your lunch and snacks are epic!! I alwys end up relying on clif bars and luna bars for snacks, kinda lame lol. I haven’t had to pack my lunch in a lon time, but I love taking salads and stuffing them into a pita or something. glad you were able to save the laptop! entertainment during a TM run is NOT OPTIONAL haha.

Reply

I have just discovered reading my kindle on the treadmill. Very nice. Much better time passer than watching shows. Disclaimer: Make the font HUGE and look away every half mile to stop from having a seizure.

Reply

Luckily with my school schedule I always eat at home. I used to be SUCH a treadmill junkie but I dread it now. I’ve been using it when I don’t feel like dealing with traffic outside though or if it’s too hot. I can usually go like 4 miles MAX. Any longer I die. The elliptical I can go longer but it still can get too boring.

Reply

I’m super passionate about the same thing- texting and driving. My Uncle John was in a terrible accident 5 years ago that totally changed his life. Two men were killed and it was all because a teen driver was texting and driving. I’ve heard they made a movie about their accident that is shown in driver’s Ed now. Do you show it?

I’m hungry. I wish I could just reach through the screen and eat some of your food.

Reply

Reggie Shaw!! That was your uncle. I show my students the movie about him and the Oprah episode. I am so sorry that was your uncle, that breaks my heart. So awful!

Reply

That’s the one! It happened the same day I had my son. John is amazing, but it has been so hard on his entire family. He had to chand careers and everything because of his injuries he sustained from the crash. Ahhhhh!!!! Don’t text and drive!!!!!! So glad you preach it to your students.

Reply

I can’t even imagine what they have gone through! It makes me so sad!

Longest treadmill run? 10 miles, just the other day once I decided to give the tv watching from my ipad a try.

Longest elliptical workout? 2 hours 45 minutes. No joke. I was injured and couldn’t run but still desperately wanted to do a marathon (my first at that time), so I had to replace several runs (including a 2o miler) with the elliptical. You couldn’t pay me to do that again!

Reply

thats insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW did you do that!!!

Reply

WOW JULIA!! That is crazy….how did it end up training you for the marathon?

Reply

Wow my Mac is my baby…I think I would have a heart attack if I saw it about to faceplant the floor…glad you saved it in time! I have an eggwhite & goatcheese sandwich with some raw veggies for lunch!

Reply

Lol thats an awesome quote.
I have no idea how you function every day without coffee.

Reply

Longest tread mill run is 6 miles…haha idk how you have run marathons on a TM! I’m so glad your bring all that food to work with you! My boyfriend brings a lean cuisine to work and that’s IT! My brain cannot process that he has nothing else besides that. I laugh because a full day of work food includes a greek yogurt, apple, carrot sticks, sugar free jello, frozen veggies, salad, fiber one bar, and another apple for pre workout . that is from 7:30 am-630PM…do you think thats too much!?

also…i stuff everything into freezer size plastic bags! I doubt your salad bowl would fit though:D But i like them just incase anything spills.

New commenter! Just wanted to agree that a spider descending the wall is soooo scary! Especially when you lose sight of it!

Lunch this week is grilled chicken nuggets and some rice pilaf and mango. I like to make batches of stuff and eat it till its gone.

Reply

HEY BRITTNEY!! Thanks so much for commenting! I am glad I am not alone in the scariness of the spider:) YUM….I want to come eat your lunch:)

Reply

Scary!! I need to build ashelf like yours, my laptop rests precariously on top of a DVD player and several board games to make it tall enough to see. The vibrations from the treadmill cause this tower to move around while I’m running. It is not food and my husband thinks I’m dumb! :-)

hahaha I love the thummies ;)
