After the Marathon

I didn’t know this but I guess it is kind of hard to get a cab sometimes (for example: after a race with 47,000 runners and 2 millions spectators). SR and I wondered around the city waving our marathon blankets at taxi drivers to get them to stop and pick us up but I think they didn’t want to drive 2 girls high on endorphins around and have us ruin their leather seats with all of our sweat.

We finally got a taxi to stop for us and save my tired legs from exhaustion to go and get 6 lbs of cupcakes.

IMG 0629

A few of us shared the PB Cup and White Chocolate Blondie cupcakes.  I also tried some of Cat’s apple cobbler cupcake and it was the best one. If you are sad and you want to be happy within 4 seconds:  Go to their website and stare at their cupcakes.  Instant good mood or maybe you will actually experience instense feelings of jealousy instead of happiness.

Cat, Heather, Katie, me, SR, awesome cousin, Katie, Catie and Stephanie!

IMG 0627

After talking for a while with these amazing girls, I hurried and attempted to get ready and put on real people clothes for our next stop.

The reason why I needed your opinion about anchovies……

IMG 0636

We went to PATSY’S pizza with some friends of ours for dinner post-marathon.  I cut out fiber completely for a few days prior to the race and so all I could think about was salad (along with half a pizza).  I looked at the menu and the above salad stood out to me.  I asked the waitress about the anchovies (never had them before) and she said they were salty……remember how I lost 2 cups of salt over the course of the race…..I went with my gut instinct that I NEEDED to refill my salt levels and ordered the salad:

Insalata Siciliana
Green Salad with Mozzarella, Roasted Peppers, Capers, Anchovies, Carrots, Tomatoes, and Artichokes with Homemade Italian Dressing

I thought it was ridiculously good (I think you may realize by now that I love any and all food so maybe don’t always take my advice).

When I was telling my sis about the salad and describing in full detail how much I loved the anchovies she went silent and said she lost a lot of respect for me because of my new love for those little fishies.  That is why I asked the question and it turns out a lot of you think they are gross too:(

We also ordered a mushroom and pepporoni pizza.

IMG 0637

After dinner we walked around for a while and our friend got this from a WAFFLE TRUCK.  A truck that makes fresh waffles?  I am officially trading my car in for one of these ‘trucks.’  I tried doing this earlier in the year for an ice cream truck but Billy stopped me.

IMG 0638

We knew we were going to gelato with my cousin soon and so we decided to hold off on waffles for this cup of heaven.

IMG 0643

My cousin lives in the city and so we had a little family reunion.  It was so great to see you Aaron and thanks for the gelato!!!

IMG 0645

Did you really think I would stop with just two desserts that day…come on…..we only had a few more hours to live it up.

IMG 0648

Liz from the best BAKING BLOG EVER treated us for more ice cream.  I had raspberry sorbet with gummy bears mixed in.

One of my most favorite things ever was to be able to finally meet these people (that I have been stalking for so long) in real life!

This may have happened at approximately 1 a.m. after my cousin and I walked up and down Times Square 500 times…..

IMG 0649

I do have one major regret from my trip……

IMG 0640

We kept walking by that place and never ate there even though we heard from everyone how amazing it is. I guess I will just have to try it next time I am in town.

Do you have cupcake shops near you?  What kind do you normally order?  Have you ever been to Crumbs?

What was your workout today?

-I did 15 on the elliptical and 45 on the spin bike.  Oh, how could I forget the 2.5 minutes of weights.

Ever eaten from a food truck?

-One time from a taco truck and it was really good.

What type of transportation do you take daily?  Cabs, trains, cars, busses?

-I drive in Utah but it was fun to take a bus, cab and train all in the same day!

The closest ‘cake shop’ we have near us is Wal-Mart :-O.

I haven’t ever even seen a food truck, I ran about 3.5 miles on the treadmill, and I drive!

I don’t know of a cupcake shop around here… Do YOU my Utah-an friend? I do know of one in Arizona (where I’m from) called Sprinkles that I LOVE. My sis and I always get a Red Velvet with creamcheese frosting and Peanut Butter Chocolate one and then share them because they’re equally amazing.
My workout today was a 45 minute interval treadmill workout.
I had a couple taquitos from a food truck one time in L.A. They were surprisingly really delicious and authentic!
I pretty much just drive everywhere…

So I’m butting in to tell you about UT cupcake places :) I’ve heard of a few, but have only been to Sweet Tooth Fairy…there is one in provo and one in orem. There is some other cupcake place by the university mall in orem too but I’ve never been.

Reply

Oh I’m so glad you did, Jessica! :) I’ve seen the Sweet Tooth Fairy but have never been in! Now that I know they have cupcakes, I have a great excuse to check it out. ;) Thanks!

There’s a couple of really yummy cupcake places in Philly where I am, including a cupcake truck or two! We have a lot of awesome trucks here, pretty much a truck for every kind of food you could ever want! And, luckily (or unluckily for my bank account), they are all right outside of my office! I drive on the very rare, rare occassion (once a month?). Usually I’m biking or walking everywhere.

There’s a bakery near us that does gluten free goodies, we don’t go nearly as much as my husband would like…

I did a 2.75 mile run, I had SO much fun, even though I put my hat and gloves in my jacket when I overheated and looked super preggers hahaha.

My husband and I have a car and a Vespa, and since it’s cold now, I take the bus, and he takes the car. Somehow I got stuck standing in the snow waiting for the bus… oh well… we’re saving a bunch of money.

Reply

We have a lot of cupcake shops but I think Sprinkles is probably the most well known? We have a pretty darn good cupcake truck (I think the ladies were on cupcakes wars) that parks in a lot close to my office. Smart people! LOL!

Today’s workout: 8 miles @ easy pace

Yes, food trucks are big time in so cal! There are some really good ones :)

Reply

… I. Am. Shocked. You should have followed my brood to Shake Shack that day. I love you, but I’m rolling my eyes right now. You’re disowned. ;)

My workout was a kick butt upper body at the gym. You know, since bathing suit season is over I better get in shape for bulky jackets. No wait, do I have that mixed up? Yeah, no, it’s right.

Reply

We have a cupcake truck that drives around Colorado springs, you’d love it! Today, 1 hour spin then 30 min strength on my legs.

Reply

Hopefully a run after work if it isn’t raining!

Never eaten from a food truck unless you count an ice cream truck :)

Daily I just drive to work… I don’t ride busses unless I’m with friends, I’m really naive and sometimes don’t realize when ppl are asking me if I want to buy things that sound normal they are sometimes codes referring to drugs.. lol true story, that happened once! Luckily my sister was near by and said ‘Uh Britt I don’t think he means what you THINK he means…..’ close call!

Patsys is my fav pizza in nyc the white pizza is the bomb! I love crumbs! 1 he spin class. I take the train and the subway into the city everyday it is very tiring!

Out of all the pizza places you hit on nyc which was your favorite?

Reply

All of these pictures are killing me! I need to start running marathons just for the food! So glad you had fun :) And good for you for running a marathon and then having energy to walk anywhere.

Reply

Mmm those cupcakes look good! Yes, there is a mini cupcake store that JUST opened up 2 blocks from my apartment 2 weeks ago. I ran by it today on my run, and if I had money on me, I probably would have cut my run short by 2 blocks. It smelled so good!

Reply

I go to Sprinkles occasionally in Orange County and there are a few independently owned cupcake shops where I’m at. I try to make it a special thing so I don’t blow up to oompa loompa status.

Reply

You’re killing me with all the pictures of yummy treats! Those cupcakes look AMAZING! I’m glad you got so much delicious food after a fabulous race! Have you ever gotten the cup-shakes at Sweet Tooth Fairy? Yumo! 7 mile treadmill run for me this morning…and ive only had food from a truck in NYC. I want to go back! :)

Reply

PB cup cupcakes?!?!??!?!? I literally just died and got so hungry. Omg. Please remind me again why I decided to stay at SU instead of going to NYC for the marathon…clearly my priorities are fucked up

My boyfriends mom has a bakery in our small town! It is awesome though!! Raspberry chocolate cupcakes are the bomb!

Cars and bikes and my two feet!

shake shack is gross to me, but i know lots of people like it. I just think of it as like the McDonald’s when there’s a bazillion AMAZING eateries. As a vegan, Manhattan is AWESOME and if you are ever interested in vegan/vegetarian either treats/meals/snacks I will take you on a tour of the e. village

I can also show you around queens and bklyn if you ever care to venture out! :)

Reply

I can’t believe I missed those cupcakes!!!!!!!

Reply

I have an amazing Cupcakery near me but never been to Crumbs. $4.50 for a cupcake is pretty pricey but I’m sure they are worth it. I love Sprinkles as well and always come up with some excuse to eat cupcakes!! I’m planning on going to spin at 7pm tonight too :) Driving is the only way that I get around.

Reply

I think we have a cupcake shop here but I’ve never gone to it before… I should change that.

My workout was 65 minutes elliptical… super easy because I’m pathetically crazy sore from my half on Sunday, in which I performed below the level I wanted to. I really need to get into some serious weight lifting and ab work cuz I seriously need to drop some excess weight and build some muscle…

And I drive my incredibly beaten up Saturn… I hit a deer a little while back, completely wrecking the fender, so my fender was glued back on… it’s attractive.

Reply

I live in Ann Arbor & we do have a cupcake shop right in town. There’s also one at the mall as well :) They are sooo good! I like the carrot cake ones best. My workout today as running 4 miles during my lunch break at work. It’s basically the only time I get to see daylight anymore *sad face*. I used to eat random truck food when I interned in Washington DC when I was in college… aaaand I pretty much drive everywhere. I walk alot though too when I’m downtown & sometimes I take the bus if I have to go far for work meetings :)

Reply

I’m so bummed I was busy this weekend to meet you. :( You have to come back asap! … & next time we can have a meetup at shake shack :)

Reply

Oh. my. word. I’m looking at the Crumbs website right now, and I am so in love. I went to Sprinkles cupcakes in Chicago and I gotta say, I was disappointed. Now I want a Crumbs cupcake!

There’s a place in the area that has good cupcakes, and I love their Fluffernutter cupcake … peanut butter + marshmallow + cupcakes = genius!

Reply

Those cupcakes look so good! I want to go to NY just for one!

I have a cupcake shop that just opened within walking distance of my house and I can’t wait to try it. I’ve heard they have a s’mores one and I need to have that.

Reply

Post marathon I ONLY want salty…burgers/fries/pizza/anchovies (sure, why not?!) Sweet normally makes me want to gag until I get my sodium levels back up. My doc said I lose up to 3x more sodium than the average person when I work out…how gross am I?!

Oh well, just means more pizza for me.

Reply

I go to a few local cupcake shops every once and a while. I change my order up. Normally I get whatever is the special or seasonal. And I’ve never been to Crumbs because I’ve never been to NYC.

No food truck where I live, and def no mass transportation. I drive a car everywhere I need to go.

Looks like you had an amazing trip!! I am totally jealous and drooling over all that glorious food!

Reply

We have a cupcake shop somewhat nearby. They have a truck that they drive around to big events where you can order from them on the street. The cupcakes are pretty good, but I’ve heard that nothing rivals “Hey Cupcake” in Austin. I’m pretty sure I’ll be road tripping down there in the next few weeks just to get a cupcake. :)
I drive a car everywhere, except on campus then I ride a bus. I have to drive from my house to the outskirts of campus, and then catch a bus from the outside of campus to the inside of campus just to save me a 40 minute walk from the parking lot to class. It’s a tough life. :) Haha

Reply

My workout for the day was going to my chiro and also getting a deep tissue massage. It’s back to the grind tomorrow – 30 minutes of boot camp.
We have tons of cupcake shops around us. My new favorite place is Nothing Bundt Cakes. So delish.
I live in Texas so public transit pretty much bites.

Reply

YUMMM! Love to see a healthy appetite after such an awesome and epic event! You two kicked ask! ;) Yes, ASK. :) I did 35 minutes of the stair climber, 200 kettlebell swings and 20 burpees. :)

Reply

I only really drive in Richmond VA, but if I ever take a bus, I feel all fancy like as if I’m traveling in Europe or some other big city…which is so funny because the bus in Richmond is not glamorous at all, I just make it feel that way in my head :)

Reply

I have yet to eat out of a food truck…but if you count the Ice Cream man than I have. Workout today…2 mile run, 20 min elliptical and 15 min cycle with 30 min of squats and lunges.

Reply

I’ve never had crumbs actually at Crumbs, but my mom ordered them for my birthday for me and had them delivered. They were amazing!! I love cupcakes!!

Reply

mmmmmm ‘white chocolate blondie cupcakes!’ next time I’m in the city for a meeting I’m swinging by Sprinkles and getting one of those.

There’s an amazing burger food truck ‘Frites and Meats’ that have gourmet burgers and fries – it usually parks in the Village or by Wall Street and people line up early for the food. It’s delish.

No workout today :( work went late. And now I want a cupcake.

Reply

Congrats on your marathon! New York looks like so much fun! I eat at food trucks everyday since they are all over campus.

Reply

That food is reason enough to run a marathon. Looks like you had an amazing time. Would you ever do the NYC marathon again?

Reply

I totally am one to judge a cupcake by its appearance and love splitting cupcakes with people! I go chocolate cake/vanilla buttercream or a cream like kind (vanilla cake/vanilla cream filling/chocolate dipped ganache). I love when the decorations and designs are done in buttercream rather than random sugar candies around the holidays..Have you ever been to a cupcake bar (its basically like cold stone ice cream for cupcakes)…

Have you ever watched the Food Network’s Food Truck Race series (basically like the Amazing Race for Food Trucks..I don’t know what would be worse though–working on a food truck in the heat of the summer or bitter cold of the winter!

Reply

Shake Shack is a block from my apartment and therefore dangerous!! Its pretty amazing, definitely my favorite for fast food…their red velvet ice cream is also awesome not that I would know or anything :=) And crumbs=happiness

Reply

omg I need pizza and ice cream now. for real lol. I think that mushroom/basil pizza is the best looking one yet! Although the 1am pizza looks good too – spinach and feta? that’s one of my favorite combos! I’m super impressed that you had the energy to walk around the city till 1am after running a marathon (pizza + ice cream = superfuel I guess!) I totally stalked the cupcake website too, it really IS a mood booster! and an appetite booster haha. Oh and I’ve totally had food from a truck!! I took some summer classes at UPenn last year, and right outside they have a JAMAICAN food truck! You can get jerk chicken and fried grouper and fresh melon mmmm it was the coolest thing ever.

Reply

You shared that cupcake!? I would never ;)

Reply

We do have a bakery and my favorite is Carrot Cake! My husband works in NYC during the week and has brought them home. They are good. He aslo gets these amazing cookies from a small woman run bakery. They are marathon runners and make these cookies that fuel you. They are huge and yummy!
My workout today was 20min. elliptical and an hour functional training class. Then I had PT for my stress fractures that will NOT heal. But..I am on the road to recovery after working with PT. Very enlightening information.
I am learning we can not just torture our bodies…we also have to respect them.

THANK GOD for a blogger who knows how to act after a marathon. Cupcakes, two desserts, and tons of pizza – great job! This is why I love your blog, that’s exactly what I would have done, except trade the pizza for burritos (best post marathon food ever, but, you were in NY, so you may be correct in your choice). Congrats on a great marathon, everything is making my mouth water, and, as always, you look adorable. Even though you prefer thin crust, have you tried Chicago pizza? I never have nor ever will have a better piece of pizza.

Reply

I had a brown sugar pumpkin cupcake today. Ohmahgash. I’m dying.

So much delicious food! I drive here in Georgia, but in Hong Kong I would walk, take a bus, a boat, and then the subway each way to work.
There are no cupcake stores nearby to me but whenever I visit a city with one it’s game time, ha!
:)

Congrats on your marathon finish!! You and SR are superheros! I am just now catching up on everyone’s race posts, and it seems like you had an amazing time!!!

Pancakes, cupcakes, bagels, waffles, ice cream, and pizza! I am in food heaven! I am not ready to run a full, but when I do I might treat myself to all of those things. A waffle truck would be heavenly…. I can’t even imagine!

i just have to say, that i’m now torn between being disappointed i didn’t make it to the actual race OR just didn’t get to go on your nom nom tour!! my gosh, i think i’m living on the wrong side of the US! ;)

After reading through these comments I feel so spoiled (read: at risk for obesity) living in Los Angeles where there are endless food trucks and endless cupcakes!! And, I’m so glad you loved the anchovies!! Yum :)

Ahhh we totally should have gone to Shake Shack! I have only been there once but they had the best frozen custard ever and I’ve heard they have amazing burgers too.

The only food truck I’ve ever been to was a cupcake truck in NYC. Mini red velvets for $1!

That is all the perfect post-race food!! Gelato is sooo yummy omg I’ve only had it once and died. I have my own car and drive it everywhere. I do have a little bakery near me it has soo many goodies and that’s actually where I tried the gelato!

I love cupcake shops, but sometimes the smaller, less hyped-up bakeries have more delicious cupcakes!

Hey janae – do you ever use the rowing machine? Any tips? Does your sister use it? could she write a tutorial?

congratulations on the great job at the race – I’m having lots of fun reading about your NY adventure. I can’t wait to visit there one day!

I loved reading about your eating adventures in NY. It looked fab.
There are a lot of cupcake places here in Phoenix. I haven’t tried them all……..yet. :-)

Shake Shack is so yum! My fiance and I went to NY over the summer and just had to try it! The movie Something Borrowed with Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson is where we found out about it! You have to try it next time! I’m super jealous of your weekend! Looks like you had a great time!!

Reply

Believe it or not, I actually am not too big on cupcakes- not a frosting girl at all..much rather a muffin or plain cake! Although the flavors still make me drool! I spent 20 minutes lying in bed whether to work out or not this morning…the endorphins argument won and I ended up running a quick 5 km followed by 20 minutes of stretching…if my muscles aren’t tight anymore, would that mean I’m loose ;)?

Reply

No Shake Shack?! That would be my ideal after-marathon treat in NY. That just means you’ll have to take another trip back for the Shake Shack!

Reply

That pizza looks so good! Sounds like you had a great time in NY!
A lot of people do take issue with anchovies, but then they crop up in so much and they never know. My boyfriend’s face was a picture when he discovered they were in his beloved worcester sauce :)
It dawned on me as I read your workout question that mine was the same as usual, and maybe I need to consider changing things up a little. I always give myself credit for moving each and every day, but maybe a little variation is in order…
My transportation is the tube. Which, after living in a city without an underground system for so long, I now thoroughly appreciate!

Reply

Wow- that pizza looks amazing.. Anchovies are something that I ate as a kid in this pasta dish my dad made all the time.. It never grossed me out since during cooking they would melt away- but I stay away from them (since I’ve been a vegetarian forever) We don’t have any cupcake shops here in RI- I feel left out!!

I LOVE COLDSTONE.

I NEED those cupcakes, and that pizza looks AWESOME!! So glad you had such a kick ass time in NYC – congrats again!!

So glad you had fun in NYC!
Congrats on the awesome marathon performance too!

That’s awesome that you went to Patsy’s! I haven’t been there, but I have been to Grimaldi’s (Patsy Grimaldi’s). These two pizza restaurants had a battle for that name some time ago. Just one of those New York things that claim they were the first. Whatever, as long as it is good pizza, right?

Cupcakes: http://www.sweetavenuebakeshop.com/ is in my town. Whether you are vegan or not, these are delicious! I’m a sucker for their “White Room” cupcake. Vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. I have not been to Crumbs but I have had a cupcake from there. Yum!

Workout this morning: 30 minutes on elliptical and upper body free weights.

Food Trucks: My alma mater- Rutgers University -had what they call the Grease Trucks. http://www.ruhungrynj.net/- That place was quite the scene at 2 am and I’m sure it still is.

Transportation: I drive to work every day.

Reply

There are a lot of food trucks in New Haven (like 15 minutes from here), there’s even a cupcake truck!

My daily transportation is a 10 min drive to work. I’ve run it before, though, too!

I think the taste of anchovies is delicious, but the look and texture are gross. When they’re just mixed into ceasar salad dressing, though, totally worth it!

Reply

there are tons of food trucks in boston too, so when you come up in april (you are right?!) ill have to tell you where to find them! all your NYC food choices look phenom and shake shack isnt going anywhere, so you will just have to come back east…although there is a location in dubai if you are heading there anytime soon ;)

Reply

I had Crumbs cupcakes when I was in LA earlier this year, and OMG, they are the best cupcakes everrr. I had the “Elvis” cupcake which was banana cake with peanut butter frosting. It was to die for.

Today’s workout was Insanity – Cardio Power and Resistance. It was no joke. I think I burned more calories today than I did during my last half marathon. Hee.

Reply

You were the dessert queen that night!
Next year we’ll all go to Shake Shack!!
I usually walk or take the subway
Whatever Crumbs cupcake you bought me was sooo good. Tons of chocolate!

Reply

I’m totally digging reading your posts on the marathon!!
I just moved to the SF bay area and hit up Sprinkles. My life was redefined when I had the red velvet with cream cheese frosting cupcakes.
I’m coming back from an injury so I did a 2 mile run & 20 minutes on the elliptical.
I drive. Public transportation kinda freaks this germaphobe out. ;)

I support your new anchovy love! I love them too, it’s not weird at all.

You have to run the marathon next year to go to the Shakes place! This summer I was staying (literally) right around the corner and went there on my last day and was SO sad I didn’t go there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have AMAZING custard shakes and french fries. Congrats on the finish and awesome time!

i walk as often as possible (youve seen how i go to town on fro-yo) or take teh subway

Reply

I actually had the best food experience ever out of a food truck in NYC…first time I tried fallafel (spelling? no clue!) and it was sooooo delish! Haha, I love how you totally did an “ice cream” crawl post-marathon. You should organize one of those, it would probably be even more fun than a bar crawl…not to mention everyone would remember everything!

p.s. it’s too bad you didn’t hit up Shake Shack, it really is the best. Guess that means you have to go back. :)

Reply

I’m not a huge cupcake person, but I’ve heard good things about Crumbs. Then again, if I ran a marathon, I’d probably eat 6 lbs of cupcakes!

Reply

wow – i’m sitting in the airport now and all i want is one of those CUPCAKES!!!! too bad the stuff here doesn’t look half as good as what you had

Man looks like you had a blast! I can’t wait to get back to NYC, the city is so incredible and so much to see and eat!

All your food looks amazing!! Come to DC for a blogger meetup and we have a shake shack and a million food trucks to try :)

I went to the Crumb’s website yesterday thinking I might order some of the cupcake’s for my brother in law since his bday is this month- guess how much the shipping was?! about $65!! EEK! The price of the cupcakes wasn’t bad ($27 for 6 huge ones) but I couldn’t get past the price of shipping. Goodness!
I will just have to admire them from your blog page until I get my butt to NYC :)

Reply

I ate the PB cup cupcake at Crumbs too, loved it! The Raspberry swirl was awesome too :). Shake Shack was SO good! You need to go next time!
