Giving those muscles what they want.

If you think that Billy and I are obsessed with hanging out with our families, you are 100% right.  After we unpacked and I made all of my lunches for the week we headed on over to my parentals.  The umbilical cord had been stretched way too far for 5 days and we needed to change that and get over there to see them.

My mother is a good good person.  She saved us leftovers so that we could have a Sunday Thanksgiving meal together.  Rolls=  lots of white flour> little amounts of white flour.

IMG 0888

Have you ever had funeral potatoes (that is what we call them in Utah)?  Basically, they are cheesy potatoes with cornflakes on top. My mom makes those instead of mashed potatoes for the holidays and I am more than okay with that.

IMG 0890

We have become quite obsessed with ping-pong and headed down to the basement to play after dinner.  I might have to do a vlog about my talent of playing with a paddle in each hand….did you know I am ambidextrous (except I can only eat with my left hand). My students get really weirded out when I write with both hands on the white board.  Even though I can do it with both, it is a lot faster to write with my left.

——————————————————-

Let’s talk about making our muscles/bodies happy.

I will spare you the picture of this outfit on me today in order save your eyes from my blinding winter legs.

You know how I have been drinking lowfat chocolate milk forever after my runs to REFUEL….I will be working with the Refuel with Chocolate Milk campaign and will be running the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon as a Team Refuel Road Warrior!

IMG 6988

I have even hooked my family on drinking a nice cold glass of chocolate milk after a hard workout. Even though I wish that other things sounded great after a run, nothing really does except for chocolate milk.  Maybe it is because I start craving it a 1/4th mile into my run and beg Billy to fill up my camelbak with it (he never will…something about milk doesn’t stay good in the heat?).

Just because you know that I give out adivce on eating dessert daily (multiple times a day) and to sleep with all of your running medals on I will include what real research has found about my chocolate milk obsession:

“Lowfat chocolate milk contains the right mix of carbs and protein to refuel muscles after a tough workout.  It helps resore muscles quickly and to their peak potential to help you perform your best during your next bout of exercise.”  (Source)

“Recent studies have found that subjects who drank regular or flavored milk after a strenyous muscle workout experienced less exercise-induced muscle damage than those who drank water or typical sports drinks.”  (Source)

Chocolate milk is my favorite recovery drink as well! My Mom brought a cooler with her to my first marathon and as soon as I crossed the finish line she busted out the chocolate milk. Talk about heaven!

Reply

Your mom is the best…that was so nice of her!

Reply

I love your blue jacket! Super cute. I loveee chocolate milk (I usually drink soy though) and I always drink it after a hard workout! So good and the only thing I really want as well. That is the coolest thing ever that you are ambidextrous. I have the smallest family ever so we just get presents for each other!

Reply

Thanks Brittany! That is fun that you do presents for everyone, we used to do that too and I LOVED IT! Have a great day Brittany!

Reply

I’m jealous–I wish I lived closer to my fam so that I c ould see them all the time too!!

And I WISH that I liked chocolate milk and hot chocolate but I’ve never been a fan. I’m all about the vanilla milk!

Reply

I need to try vanilla milk….do you buy it that way or do you add vanilla syrup/powder? Vanilla milkshakes are SO good!

Reply

I’ve never bought it because whenever I’ve seen it, it’s been quite expensive!! I usually add vanilla extract, some sort of sweetener, and sometimes cinnamon (hence my blog’s name haha) to milk or almond milk and then either have it cold or heated!

Reply

I never used to let my kids drink chocolate milk when they were growing up. Honestly, I couldn’t keep them in milk if we had chocolate to mix in with it – I now have a second refrigerator in the garage to take care of that issue :). My college age daughter teases me that the first thing she bought at the grocery store was chocolate milk. I now do keep it available, but the kids can only drink it after they run!!! Can you buy the refuel shirt? I’d love to get one for my daughter!

Reply

A SECOND FRIDGE….I am jealous:) Ha, I LOVE that your kids are hooked on it now too:) They actually had me choose which shirt I wanted them to print on. Have an amazing day!

Reply

I love the choc milk shirt! I want one! Love love chocolate milk :D

Reply

I love all flavors of milk- strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. Do you have coffee milk in Utah? I ask because when I was on vacation somewhere and started talking about it people looked at me like I had twelve heads… so I was wondering if it was just an east coast thing. But it is BY FAR the best flavor of milk to me :)

Reply

NOOOO….I have never heard of coffee milk! I need to try that sometime! I just tried strawberry milk for the first time and it was incredible!

Reply

I’ve never heard of funeral potatoes but I wish I had! They sound good :)
We’re actually thinking about drawing names for Christmas for the first time this year. We’re all past the point of needed multiple gifts to open and it would be a heck of a lot easier for shopping purposes!
I love that shirt. Kind of want one!

In my obsession to qualify for Boston, I was determined to gain every edge. I went to all sorts of sports nutrition stores and asked men with monstrous chest muscles what to use post-workout. I was consistenly shown huge Bins of Whey Protein. Then I figured the muscles were developed from picking those vats of powder up.

Well, I finally was buying some FRS energy gels and an Enduorox post-run drink mix from a skinny rag of a dude, and after I complained about the price, he told me ‘chocolate milk’ is all he used. I scanned the man suspicously… surely the chocolate rabbit drink couldn’t provide the same bang as this specialized drink. But I saw fast times and running wisdom in his eyes, so I set the 29.99 endurox back on the table, and have stuck with Chocolate Milk ever since. And you can’t argue with both the serious research and my own less than scientitic results.

Reply

I LOVED hearing about your story of finding the true (CHEAP) recovery drink. You tell the BEST stories:)

Reply

What a fun race outfit! You’re going to kill that race :)

I had a short 2 miler this morning to wake myself up and will do another 3 or 4 this afternoon. Enjoying as much outside running before the snow flies and it becomes miserable.

Reply

That is awesome you are doing a double. I love that you said you ran to wake yourself up…I do the SAME THING and I feel so alive after a run! Have an amazing day Karla and enjoy your run this afternoon!

Reply

Glad you’re home safe and sound! We just made it back in town yesterday too. As much as we love our families and miss them already, it’s nice to be home.

On my husband’s side of the family, we draw names. On my side, we don’t quite yet since I’m the oldest and my siblings still live at home. I’m all about drawing names though! It makes things much more affordable, especially with big families! ;)

I LOVE chocolate milk! So does my husband. I like the thick, creamy, REALLY chocolate-y stuff, but my husband only likes it with a “little” chocolate sauce. Weirdo?! I say the more chocolate the better!!

Reply

I love my pink and grey lulu shorts for a race outfit!

Reply

I will be going to lululemon.com right now to check out your shorts:) Have an amazing day Heidi!

Reply

Utah has so many unique foods I have never heard of…fry sauce, funeral potatoes…I feel uncultured with all these exotic foods.

My husband’s family does cards instead of preszies, so we each spend quite a bit of time finding nice holiday cards and writing a meaningful message and sentiment for the year. Sometimes we get each other presents, but this year we are going to Mexico after Christmas as a gift. I like the idea of drawing names though.

Reply

I guess you will have to come visit me and I will make you all of the Utah foods:) That is such a great idea to do cards for Christmas. I am so excited you are going to go to Mexico and can’t wait to read all about it!

Reply

Eeeeee! So you should ask them if this means you can do a giveaway of chocolate milk cause I would reaaaally like that.

Reply

WOW nice job and cute outfit that will be awesome to race the rock and roll. You are gonna …um, rock it :P

Reply

I love drinking iced coffee post-run but I just had a lightbulb moment: totally adding chocolate milk to my iced coffee next time instead of plain milk! Ohhh yeah time to crank it up a notch :-)!

Reply

I love wearing my Nike running shorts and then a long tank top to run races.
I have a very small family, so we all buy each other gifts still. But I think for larger families drawing names is the way to go to stay in budget!
LOVE chocolate, and chocolate milk after runs is what would make me finish my runs, especially in the cold winter!
Next run will be inside on the treadmill Wednesday.

Reply

That’s such a cute outfit! My favorite outfit was probably what I wore for my Turkey Trot on Thursday! It was coooold so I wore my favorite Under Armour tights with my Lululemon base top. (Softest, warmest fabric EVER) and a short sleeve tech tee over it. I was so snuggly and comfy and not the least bit to warm or too cold!

My next run is tonight! On the treadmill.. :(

Reply

Seriously…..lulu tops are my favorite and so are the under armour tights….I wear them every time I run outside. How did your trot go? What was the distance? Enjoy your treadmill run tonight!!!

Reply

Absolutely love that outfit! I just won one of their grants last month! I haven’t picked out an outfit for the marathon yet. I wear something new for each one (which is getting hard now that I will be in the double digits, marathon number 10 soon)

Reply

this is TOTALLY true! ANd I know the professor who was behind the projects–he works at BYU and is hilarious.

I LOVE drinking chocolate milk after working out–so tsty!!

PLEASE MAKE A VLOG!

Those potatoes sound amazing, but I’ve never heard of them.

I’m not a fan of chocolate milk, but regular milk I can get on board with.

My next run will probably be on my treadmill at home, but my next race is the Hot Chocolate 15k in DC on Saturday (while you’re running the Vegas half!).

Reply

hiiii!! i’ve missed you, ive been MIA for the past week…its been a crazy time, but i’ll have to finally get back to bloggin tonight!!

absolute favorite race outfit= my adidas running skort and my orange/white adidas top..its a cute soccer looking shirt but the whole ensemble is comfy and doesnt chafe on me at all, yay.

on my dads side of the family, we do a secret santa. we buy gifts for my immediate family and kevins immediate family..its definitely alot of people to buy for, lol.

I AM A CHOCOLATE MILK MONSTER! i love chugging down that stuff after a long run…so good and refreshing to me.

next run is today on the treadmill, 7 miles :) cant wait!

Reply

I MISSED YOU!! Secret santa..that sounds like a blast! Dang, you have a lot of shopping to get done. Someday when we meet and go for a run together we will drink chocolate milk together after. Enjoy your 7 mile run!

I have MISSED you & your blog!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I hope you had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving- I will be catching up today!!

Reply

I have missed YOU!! Um, if I don’t get an update on your blog soon you are just going to have to email me your life updates:) Hope you had an amazing Thanksgiving gorgeous girl!

Reply

I don’t know if I have a favorite race outfit ever, but I do have a (ok, three) favorite pair of running shorts ever. I LOVE Mountain Hardwear Pacer Advance running shorts. We stopped doing sibling Christmas presents because it was making Christmas too expensive, so we usually just buy gifts for our parents and grandmothers. Chocolate milk is good, but vanilla milk is even better!

Reply

You sold me…I must get those shorts that you love. I will be googling them in just a minute. That is a good idea how you and your family buy presents!

Reply

Funeral Potatoes are the best!

Reply

I really don’t drink milk like I used too. I’m working on a different approach. My next run is 4 miles of hills!!

Reply

I’ve actually only had chocolate milk once in my life! haha I know that’s crazy I just don’t really like milk in general. I tried to like it but its just not for me!

Reply

I don’t have a favorite race outfit. I haven’t splurged yet on any great running clothes (I just started running in April and wanted to make sure I was going to stick with it before spending too much money on gear) but you can bet that this Spring I will be loading up!

I am an only child so I don’t have any brothers and sisters to buy for, anyway, so we just buy for everyone: my mom and dad, my grandma (the only one I have left), our daughter (of course) and my brother-in-laws dogs. We stopped exchanging gifts with my BIL and SIL a few years ago.

I LOVE chocolate milk after a run!

My next run will be tonight after work, outside, rain or shine. I’m on a mission…at least until I lose the 4 pounds I gained this weekend. :)

Reply

My favorite race outfit might just be the crazy turkey costume I wore on Thanksgiving this year – 1120 runners and I was the only one in costume… d’oh! But it was fun, and I made it onto the local news AND in the Sunday Paper! But in terms of real “workout gear” I’ve been loving my under armour coldgear lately, with my NB Minimus Trails! :)

For Christmas, we draw names on both sides of our families. This year we used http://www.elfster.com to facilitate, I like it a lot!

I loooove chocolate milk. I use it as a recovery drink too!

I’ll probably go for a run this afternoon – gotta start burning of all the crap I ate in the last few days… and I have a race on Saturday – The Santa Shuffle. The first 1000 people to register got a free santa suit to run in, so that will be pretty funny!

Reply

A FREE santa suit….that is the coolest thing ever and I can’t wait for the pictures. That is a great website, thanks for linking it, we will have to use that. Way to be the coolest person at your T-day race and DRESSING UP…you are my kind of girl!

Reply

Oh there will definitely be pictures – I even roped my husband, our friend Greg, and my mom into running this one with me, so I’ll be sure to have someone there with my camera! Elfster is pretty rad, it makes things easier when you can’t get the whole crew together to draw names. As for being the coolest person at the race, it was pretty funny, only the top male/female finishers and ME made the news, haha. And I was 300th. LOL! I figure if I’m not gonna be first, I may as well have fun!

Reply

Im not a choc milk lover really, just not a big milk lover in general.
My favoooorite running outfit (or any type of workout outfit) I have is this pair of dry fit capris I have. loooove them
and also, as far as fam goes, we dont really do presents anymore now that we dont live near any of our fam anymore. I send my sister with the kids a gift card usually and we send torrances sister/niece a gift card too and then we always send torrs mom and gma something small!

Reply

Gift cards are the best presents ever:) I love my dry fit capris too. Have an amazing day!

Reply

I too am ambidextrous! I write better with my left but everything else is done with my right. My mom makes the same potatoes but in Texas they call them au gratin potatoes. I love chocolate milk. I have yet to try it after a workout, but will try it this week since I’ve been cleared to start running again.

Reply

This makes my day Tabaitha…we are so alike! I am SO happy that you are cleared to run again! Let me know how it goes and try the chocolate milk after a run!

Reply

I love to race in Lululemon turbo run shorts.

Speaking of white flour goodness, Chris and I bought a Pillsbury french bread loaf, baked it, and before we new it the loaf was basically gone and so was a stick of butter. It is times like those I think Janae would be so proud. :)

Reply

I have never been so proud of anyone in my entire life. WAY TOO GO! Hope you are having a great first day back to school!

Reply

I have never heard of funeral potatoes! We draw names for kids and adults in our family. I makes thing a lot less stressful.
My next run is 5 am tomorrow 5 miles.

Reply

Have you had cookies and cream nesquick? It’s sort of life changing.

I am thinking of taking a kickboxing class so that I am more equipped to deal with holiday shoppers.

Reply

When I did my first tri back in May, I wanted a thin, light weight top to wear that would fit easily under my wet suit. I found this HOT pink Under Armour tank that is awesome. The bright color was a bonus because I was easy to spot!

My side of the family is pretty small so we buy gifts for each person. But my BF’s side of the family is HUGE. To avoid racking up a credit card bill, we decided to do “family gifts” this year. Either a gift certificate to dinner or a fun game for everyone to play. It’s just not in the budget to buy for everyone.

Love chocolate (rice) milk! And now that is getting cooler, love me some hot chocolate!

Next run is tomorrow on the treadmill.

Reply

You should totally become a Utah Dairy Ambasador, they go around with sashes and tiaras and give people milk and creamies!

Your race outfit is SO CUTE!

I love the idea of drawing names, there are too many of us and I’d rather spend my money on running gear for myself hahaaha. We are doing a Secret Santa drawing for the stockings.

I LOVE chocolate milk, but I need a good dairy free alternative that has the same amount of protein, I want to give chocolate almond milk a go :)

Tomorrow, but it might be in the afternoon, mornings are just too cold now. I found a good 2 mile loop that is minimally hilly that I like for mid week runs. My real training plan starts next week, so I am going to have to start mapping out some more routes!

What is your absolute favorite race outfit that you have ever worn? I want details people, you know I am a lover of all things workout gear?

-I am pretty sure the above is my new favorite.

Random question: Do you draw names in your family for Christmas presents or do you get everyone a present?

– Everyone gives everyone else presents. And with my family, that’s – 14 people. Thank goodness for Amazon!

Are you a chocolate milk lover?

– If I’m going to drink milk I would prefer it to be chocolate. Unfortunately I am not a milk drinker. Double unfortunately is that I’m out of the routine of fueling after a workout. It’s hard – a long workout takes away my appetite!

When and where is your next run?

– Tomorrow, starting from my gym – 7 miles. I’m extra excited about my last run, however, which was 13 miles yesterday. With that run I hit 100 miles in a month for the first time! Yay!

Reply

oh yes, we love our chocolate milk fix. Can’t do so much dairy but chocolate whey shakes with almond milk and banana and the best!I buy chocolate refuel for the hubs. Good call on that one! Refuel the proper way!!

Reply

Always good to hear new excuses for more choco milk!!! Glad ya’ll had a safe trip!

Reply

I’ve been drinking chocolate milk after my runs recently and I have had way less soreness than I did when I wasn’t drinking it. Plus, who doesn’t love a bit of chocolate after a hard workout?

My favorite running outfit is anything that makes me look slimmer these days. I’m already starting to show at 3 months, so if I can feel thin in it, I’ll love it.

Reply

Mmmm- I love chocolate milk after a long run… or anytime, really.
I am ambidextrous, too. I write and eat with my left hand- throw, kick, cut mainly with my right. I can write with both, but am WAY better with my left.
My in-laws have a family rotation for Christmas presents and we buy that family a gifts.
I have a running date with a friend tonight! Hopefully 8-10 miles.

Reply

LOVE chocolate milk…ive been using it to refuel too after my workouts. i just need to watch how much i drink! :)

Reply

I’ve heard so many great things about chocolate milk for runners, but I’m lactose intolerant. Do you think that chocolate soy milk works the same? Any help would be great! Thanks!

Reply

I think that chocolate soy milk is a great idea if you are lactose intolerant. Soy protein is a complete protein and contains a healthy amount of calcium! Soy milk also has a great variety of complex carbs! Here is a great link that compares milk to soy milk and the only really noticeable difference was calories. Let me know what you think:

This is great! Thank you! :)

Reply

I am ambidextrous too! I can’t write with both hands, but I can do lots of stuff with my right hand (I’m a lefty). Impressive about the writing with both hands!

And speaking of the Las Vegas half, I totally had a dream last night that I was there with you guys running it. This just tells me that next year I need to be there!! :)

Reply

best of luck this weekend, friend!! you’ll do amazing, I’m sure!

Reply

Chocolate milk is the bee’s knees for sure! I love it
P.s. Did your sister fly to Utah on Sunday? If so, I’m pretty sure she was on my flight and as soon as I saw her I thought “that cute gal looks familiar!” I didn’t want to be all creepy and chase her through the airport trying to ask her “are you Janae’s sister!?” so.. yeah.. Thought that was pretty much awesome.. its like meeting a celeb

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS!!!That was totally her….were you flying from Arizona? This really made my day! We should all go do something!

Reply

I love that you are doing this campaign. Ironically, the other day, I don’t know why, but I was just a’ cravin’ some chocolate milk! And then I bought it. And then I thought “whoah, why oh why do i not drink this every day??”

So in short – I heart chocolate.

Hopefully I’ll run after work. But I’m feeling sooo tired….

Reply

I love my Nike dri-fit capris because they hide my jiggle when I run. Since there are like 1,999 nieces and nephews in my family (ok, theres’s 35), they all draw names at Thanksgiving. The adults do a Chinese Gift Exchange. It’s a lot of fun. Next run will be tomorrow! I always take Sun and Mon off.

Reply

I love your race outfit!

I keep hearing about the benefits of chocolate milk. I need to give it a shot. I should after I run tonight.

Reply

Thanks! Yes, try it and let me know what you think!

Reply

My only problem with chocolate milk, is doesn’t it have a lot of sugar? I’m supposed to avoid added sugars so I’m not sure it’s the best re-fuel for me! Although it tastes so good…

Reply

TWO things—

1) Love how you make all your lunches for the week before the week starts!!

2) I also LOVE milk after a great workout, I feel like its a natural little miracle in a cup!

Reply

I like chocolate milk, but I prefer strawberry milk. Sine I usually run out of 3 boxes of the strawberry in a day or so {looks side to side in hopes that no one caught that}, I end up refueling with chocolate milk more often.

Reply

HAHAHA You are awesome. Strawberry milk really is SO delicious….must go buy some now!

Reply

I love chocolate milk not only as a recovery drink but as a snack at night, it keeps me from filling up on junky stuff before bed.
My fav running outfit is Athleta stability run shorts with a tank. I’m digging the champion tanks with the empire waist that Target sells.

Reply

Chocolate milk is my first choice after a run, especially if it is BYU chocolate milk!

I don’t have any favorite running clothes (yet).

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS….byu’s chocolate milk is to die for. I might just have to go on over right after work and go buy some….or text Billy to bring me home some ha! Have a great day!

Reply

I hate being lactose intolerant!! I wanna drink chocolate milk after runs, but I can’t….almond milk and soymilk and those replacements don’t have the same carb: protein ratio. I do however drink a smoothie made with greek yogurt after runs! That’s so awesome that you get to be on Team Got Milk!! being a sponsored athlete FTW! :-D

Reply

funeral potatoes?.. wow, never heard of them!!
That’s some awesome race gear you’ve got.. i love the color!
chocolate milk is my absolute FAVOURITE!

Reply

Mmm..I love chocolate milk and have heard of this study before however, I had asked my personal trainer about it and he had said that this is good for those who are in the maintaining phase and not still trying to lose weight. I don’t know if that is true or not, but do you???

Reply

I think that it is for anyone! Whether you are trying to lose weight or not you need to eat something after a tough/long workout! Chocolate milk is a great option and if you have just a serving or two it isn’t super high in calories. This is just my opinion though:) Have a great day!

Reply

Thanks for replying! This was my impression too..I believe that everything in moderation is ok..Or at least that’s how I make myself feel better ;)

Reply

I have never thought to have chocolate milk after a run! I think I may need to try this!

I just started running and my first race is in March! I can’t wait! But will have to wait until then to see which outfit I love as a race outfit :)

Reply

AHHH I am so excited for your first half and all the training. You are going to rock it! Try the chocolate milk after a long/tough run….I love it!

Reply

Yes! My aunt makes the same potatoes at Thanksgiving. They are so so so good! We do mashed too so if you really wanted to over-carbo load you could, lol.

Love choco milk after running. In fact, I love chocolate milk when I am not running. When I was pregnant with my son I drank gallons and gallons of it, lol. No wonder the kid loves it too :)

Did speedwork today! W/U, 6×400 with 400 active recovery between, c/d.

It’s VEGAS week!!! YEEEAAHHH!

Oh, and Christmas! We only buy for the kids (nieces, nephews, etc) and our parents. We have found it to me much easier that way :) There are so many little ones now that if we bought for everyone I wouldn’t be able to eat until 2012.

Reply

My favourite workout outfit – oh definitely my new fluoro striped sports bra with a white tank and navy running tights! It makes my mood brighter just wearing it :)
We only have a very small family so we buy presents for everyone. This year I am donating two goats via Oxfam unwrapped, as a present to my Aunt and Uncle. They don’t really need anything so I think this is a nice thing to do!
After running it takes me a little while to really want to eat something but I usually crave salty stuff like peanut butter on rice crackers :)

Reply

I don’t like chocolate so I was glad to see the part about drinking flavored milk!! Strawberry milk post run is going to be my new fuel!

Reply

too funny that your family calls those taters funeral potatoes, mine does too. i always thought that my fam was just odd for calling them that, but apparently it may be normal. gosh i want some right now…love those things. and of course love chocolate milk, and that is such a cute refuel outfit.

Reply

I want that tank top! looks super comf :)

Reply

I am super jealous of your fabulous new outfit! You look adorable in that jacket. My favorite running outfit changes constantly, but right now, I still get a little nostalgic when I wear the blue Nike jacket that I wore for my first half marathon. I wore it again on Thanksgiving for a Turkey Trot and got a 5K PR! Clearly it is my lucky jacket.

I am with you on the chocolate milk… it’s my favorite recovery drink. I crave it on long runs! Well, I crave it constantly, but that’s a different story. I even got my boyfriend started on it, and I think he only listens to about 25% of what I say about running and fitness, so that’s an impressive feat!

My next run is tomorrow! I’m starting a new training plan for a half marathon in February, and tomorrow is supposed to be speedwork… which I’ve never done before. I’m a little nervous to try it, I’m slow!

Reply

i dont drink milk, but when i was younger i used t love chocolate and strawberry flavored milk.

Reply

When I was a workout regular (haven’t been for a while… boo!) chocolate milk was a favorite post exercise snack. Tastes so good!

Our family does “gifts from the heart” or aka “homemade Christmas presents.” We did away with the traditional gift buying about 5 years ago when we realized our Christmas was getting OUT of control and we were loosing the focus of what the season was all about. Now we all get creative and make family members gifts. Besides keeping our focus in check it truly is cheaper overall and has become so fun at Christmas time to see what everyone comes up with!

Reply

My favorite race/workout outfit is probably what I wore to my first half marathon, mostly for sentimental reasons. Now, I wouldn’t be caught dead in a matched running outfit:), but that day I wore orange Nike tempo shorts and an orange Nike tank. I wanted my husband to be able to find me afterwards in the sea of thousands, and it worked! I also found myself easily in the unidentifiable runner photos online, including my favorite race photo ever.

We do very little as far as gift giving now. We try to focus more on being together, and the thought behind what Christmas REALLY is about. My parents are divorced, and every couple of years we do family trips together with my mom and brothers/SOs. With my dad, we spend a laidback day together and we take the money we would ordinarily spend on gifts and give it to the food pantry. With a modest amount from us, they are usually able to buy a whole VAN full of food! My husband’s side is tough – they seem very wrapped up in the commercial aspect of it, and it bothers us greatly. Since they live a ways away, we tend to spend the holiday with my family and time after with his. Hate that it needs to be that way, but it is a lot less stress and frustration for us. And more enjoyable, too.

Reply

If we are being honest I HAVE to have a Coke Cola Classic after my long runs. I admit I’m an addict. After my first two marathons I instructed my hubs that he MUST be waiting for me with a Coke. If you go to my blog you will see me show casing the most delectable Coke in the world after the Vancouver USA Mary. But I also know that Glutamine is very important to help me walk the days after log runs so I also always have chocolate Recoverite shaken into milk. I guess my own little version of cold Swiss Miss :)

Reply

Super cute race outfit!! Do you know what brand the tank is? I love it!

Reply

Yeah it is lululemon and it is the most comfortable thing ever!

Reply

The umbilical cord is the same with my family. I go a few hours without texting my mom and i have withdrawal symptoms.

I keep hearing about these ‘funeral’ potatoes. Is it just a utah thing?
