Now that is a high quality picture for ya…..you try running and taking a picture of yourself at the same time.  Don’t worry, I only tripped once.

You know how my ‘long’ run on Saturday felt like death?!?!  Well, today finally felt a little bit more normal and dare I say it almost felt good:)   I did 8 miles with a 1% incline at an average pace of 8:16.

Maybe the run felt so good because of the industrial sized fan I had 1 foot away from my face or the fact that I was watching Biggest Loser and I am obsessed with that show.  I kind of want to try the challenge that they did last week (the giant pin ball thing that was on top of the pool).

Today’s run just made me remember that bad runs are normal and if you stick with it…..the good ones will come again along with many more hard ones too!   It’s that feeling afterwards that keeps us coming back for more and more!

What was/is  your workout today?

Are you liking the biggest loser this season?

-I still love it but I am not gonna lie….Anna isn’t my favorite, I miss Jillian!

Plyometrics this morning, 1 mile run with my kids this afternoon, and heading out in a few minutes for another longer run pushing one kiddo in a stroller :) Biggest Loser is one of my favorites. But I agree Anna is no Jillian, she’s too nice! The other new trainer is awesome though! I love his mean face :)

Reply

Oh my goodness…I love him too!! He can be so nice but also crazy mean to get them to work hard!

Yesterday was BodyPump so today is all about cardio :)

Biggest Loser is actually filmed (or used to be at least) at this giant property in the hills of my town. My boyfriend and I take our dogs hiking up near it. It’s insane how big the property is – I think the main house is something like 45,000 sq. feet!

Reply

I spun for an hour and a half on the trainer while watching that very episode of The Biggest Loser. I love the new trainer Dolvett, but not so hot on Anna.

I’m so glad you had a good run! Good runs are like gold, and us crazy runners keep sifting through the dirt to find them!

Reply

LOVE that metaphor about good runs!

Reply

SO glad you found your running mojo again!! Makes me smile!

Reply

I am loving Biggest Loser ofc but that might be because of my unconditional love to Ben… If my BF knew……….. ;)
Work-out today: 5k fast run!

Reply

That is a great run! SO glad that you are running again!

My workout was intervals on the treadmill, and actually not too bad. I think I need to bring an industrial size fan with me – that would make it much better. Wonder if the Y would go for that?

After work: short 3 mile run + Jackie Warner strength dvd

I have such a love/hate relationship with BL but I continue to watch anyway! Anna is ok, but I too miss Jillian. I love the new guy trainer though.

Reply

So my workout this afternoon will be 3 miles — either watching Parenthood or jogging with my dog. I have never watched Biggest Loser but I have heard good things about it!

Reply

I still love Biggest Loser too! I love love love the new guy trainer but Anna just isn’t tough enough. I felt bad that she got stuck with the old people. I feel the teams are not fair at all!

Reply

YAAAAY so happy you had a good run!! They make the bad runs SO WORTH IT!! :D

My workout today was a killer training session with my running team and it was so much fun!!! I’m gonna be feeling that one tomorrow though! :P

Reply

Today’s workout was 45 minutes of spin class and 20 minutes on the elliptical. I’m tapering for marathon in 11 days! It felt good to mix it up today. You make a fantastic point about good and bad runs. Haven’t been watching BL but I loved it in the past :)

Reply

Glad you had a good run! Those really do make you keep coming back for more! I bailed on my 8 miler today. My calves are feeling sore and beat up from my long run Sunday. Better safe than sorry!

Reply

You are seriously my hero! I was going to run this morning, but it was raining. And seriously, I am still a Cali girl at heart (and I have NO clothing for any type of weather) so I am going once I get off work! It looks to be fairly clear (famous last words, right?)

I always love the Biggest Loser, and Bob is seriously hilarious this season. That good morning song last week? Priceless.

You are SO right about bad runs. I am obviously no expert, but I had an aweful run recently, and it dawned on me that race day might be a bad day, might as well teach myself to push through!

Reply

My last run was a bad one but hopefully tonight’s run will be good!

Reply

I love Biggest Loser! We used to do the elliptical during all of the first hour and one night we tried to do the entire two hours but after 90 minutes on the elliptical we were spent!

Kudos to you for the picture! I would have probably fallen!

Reply

Trainer day!!! Triceps and upper legs. Ouch! I am watching biggest loser and I like the new guy but am NOT impressed at all with Anna. She won’t last through any merge.

Look at you, right back to 8 miles on the dreadmill.

Running is all about taking the good, the bad, AND the ugly – that’s why only the strong survive! The mental games during and after a tough run are SO challenging…but nothing beats the runners high that keeps us weirdos coming back for more!

My workout is – NOTHING. Resting up a sore shin before the Chicago Marathon this weekend! Eeeeeeeeeek!

Reply

YEAH! you know this makes me happy to hear! woo hoo! the tough runs are SO frustrating….i feel like I had an entire summer of them but mostly to my own fault because I took 0 time off. good job julia on that one. SO. as much as post-st george i want to run every single day i have done NOTHING. and will continue to do so until my legs feel normal again ;) i hope thats soon because I want to run with you friend! that would be a blast. i dont know the weather but i am itching to do a long canyon run next saturday maybe before it gets too terribly cold and blustery up there :) anywayyy. i got off topic…but those good/great runs make running SO sweet!

Reply

I had an 8 miler today too! It kicked my bootie this morning!

I am liking the Biggest Loser, but I do miss Jillian so much. She was just so awesome to watch. I did like how Anna told a contestant the first week that if she could manage to talk, it meant she could keep going (when the lady asked for a break).

Reply

I LOVE the biggest loser but really really miss Jillian! Dolvett is definitely a great addition but Anna just doesn’t have the yell factor…Nevertheless I am still addicted and always watch it with a bowl of ice cream :) Is that wrong?

My workout today was a 6 miler with my brand new garmin! I got it yesterday and cannot wait to get home to play with it some more :)

Reply

Good for you, girl! :) Glad 8 felt good. Great job!
I did 50 minutes on the stationary bike and later went shopping at Target. Because, you know, that’s a work out too. ;)

Reply

My workout today was 2 miles of running/walking. My legs felt so incredibly tight and stuff. It def. was a BAD run!!!!

I like the Biggest Loser. My favorite trainer was Jillian, but now its a tie between Bob and the new guy trainer. They both would probably make me cry if I was on the BL, no lie!!!!

You go girl for running 8 miles today :) You rock!!!

Reply

Hold on to the memory of that bad run, it will make the great ones seem super amazing and keep you coming back for more. Yay for progress and being one day closer to the NYC marathon.

Reply

Attempted my speed workout today. Had to cut it short – I don’t do this often. I issues with rest and recovery, and that’s not good either. My legs are shot after 70.3 last weekend and an Oly tri on Saturday. I should rest but I’m too worried about getting in a 20 miler before marine corps on the 30th! You have marathon and tri experience…do you think a half-iron prepared me for the 26.2?

Reply

I want to play the pinball game too!!!

I am a huge BL fan and Anna, well, she has a lot to prove. I still don’t know how I feel about her. The new guy is AWESOME! Him and Bob are going to bring it!

Yaaay for a great 8 miler! I did a whole lotta nada today :)

Reply

Anna is the worst! However, I totally love Dolvett- “Are you touching my treadmill?! YOU DID NOT JUST TOUCH MY TREADMILL!!!! GET OUT!!!!” I’m going to like him even more, I have a feeling. Plus, those white teeth just do something for me…

Can’t wait for the show tonight. Congrats on a stellar workout!

Reply

I’m such a huge BL fan. But….I miss Jillian too. Anna’s not quite cutting it for me. Dolvett, on the other hand, ……more please?

Reply

Quick bike ride watching the sun rise! It was great :)

Reply

YAYYY SO SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! spinning for me with a legs weight workout!

Reply

Great job on your run! As always, even after just recovering, you are SPEEDY fast!

I’ve been sick for the past few days, so I haven’t worked out. But tomorrow, I plan on going for my first run since recovering this past week from a slight injury. I’m nervous to run again, but oh well.

I’ve been watching the Biggest Loser a bit these past weeks and I agree, I really still like the show, but I don’t think Anna is tough enough or something. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is..maybe I just miss hard core Jillian, ha.

Reply

We should so get a few more people and do the pool pinball! it looked like so much fun! :) (too bad we dont live closer) ;) great run!! :D

Reply

I love The Biggest Loser, I can’t get enought of it! I really like the new trainer, Dolvett, he seems pretty awesome!
I did some Yoga this morning!

Reply

I decided that the reason I love running is the variety. I can run 10 miles one day and feel amazing, and then the next day run 2 miles and feel like crap. I love the challenge of having those “good days” after having a really really bad running day. Today it was really stormy up in Logan, so I decided that I would watch BL during the storm. It was my first episode in a few years…I am not a huge fan of Anna, because I don’t feel like she gives the contestants the reality check that they need. She gives them sympathy, which is something they don’t need at this point. They need to face reality and get their butts into gear! After BL, the sun came through the clouds and I got a quick 3 miles in…productive procrastination from homework :)

Reply

That is a really great perspective on running. I tend to feel defeated on the days that I struggle, and complacent on really great running days. Now that I read what you wrote, it seems so straightforward. I am definitely going to apply this to my running approach :)

Reply

Anna is painful to watch- I feel embarrassed for her. Her “toughness” is just so fake and phony. UGH…I think Cara was even a tad better!

Reply

Yay for a great run! No workout for me today – feeling a little under the weather, and I’m resting/tapering for my half this weekend anyways.

What was up with Bob in that episode?! Haha….and I agree – Anna is not my favorite. I love the new guy trainer though…they should mix up the teams now I think.

Reply

I really need to get a TV in front of my treadmill! I’m not gonna lie, I’ve never watched biggest loser….I know, the horror!

Reply

My bum hip and knee kept me from running today. I did an hour of ellipticalling and then hit up the weights!

Biggest Loser= MY FAVORITE TV SHOW EVER. I’m sad that Jillian left (She is a workout wonder woman!!!), but Anna is . . . okay. She just seems a little uncertain. Dolvett on the other hand, I really like. He seems to know the right balance of being personable with his team and really pushing them in the gym. I sometimes wish I could just have one of the trainers be in charge of my daily workouts! Can’t wait to watch tonight!

Reply

You are such a running machine, Janae!

I ran outside this am… 5 miles… and managed to to trip and fall on my face in the huge puddles because I had my headlamp on. (i may or may not have fallen in one the other day)

Reply

I’m torn– I really miss Jillian but I love Dolvette! “Don’t touch my treadmill” makes me laugh every time!

Reply

“Running is good for you. Some days you feel it….other days you just have to believe.” ok I don’t really know who said that, but I think it to myself every time I have a bad run! glad yours was good today – 8 miles!! getting back up there yeahhhh!!!

I’M OBSESSED WITH BIGGEST LOSER TOO!!!!! And I totally agree, Jillian needs to come back – Anna is really not hardcore enough. Dolvett though…I don’t exactly mind watching him….hahha.

My workout = about 5 1/2 miles at 7:15 pace…my stomach was on the fritz though :(. one of those days where you “just gotta believe”!

Reply

I didn’t miss an episode of BL last season, but for some reason Anna’s appearance on the Live Finale kind of turned me off and I haven’t seen one episode this season. I feel so bad because she really did nothing but walk out on stage (I don’t think), but I just can’t get myself to watch it!

Reply

i can relate, fans help a lot! so glad to hear training is getting better! I think you born for the treadmill.
haha.

Reply

Yes! This post made me so happy for you! Stoked to hear you had a good run. And that pace after not *really* running for so long? AWESOME! I actually ran 8 miles this morning too (along with a few other readers, I see!) and felt fast and speedy on the trails outside our house and *almost* beat the rain. :D Tomorrow it’ll be strength training again – something HIT-ish.

I love the BL! I agree with you re: Anna but still like the show, and having new trainers makes me like Bob even MORE if that was possible. ;)

Reply

I miss Jillian. And Anna kinda stinks… Sorry. I still watch it though.

Reply

I hiked almost two miles this morning for work, then came home and ran 4 slow miles with a running buddy, and then did a 1/2 hour full body workout on the living room floor. And some stretching, my hamstrings are killing me!

And yay for your run! Just be careful!

Reply

I love BIGGEST LOSER!! Not loving Anna… she is no Jillian! Jillian is my favorite go-to fitness/wellness expert. I listen to her podcasts on my runs. She has sooo much interesting and useful things to say and she takes questions from callers every time! ‘

I was supposed to run this morning, but wasn’t feeling it. I went for a speedy walk and then did strength circuits after work. I have been feeling burnt out from running and maybe a step back from it for a couple days will help get me back in the game. Glad your run went well this morning!!

Reply

I did a progressive run this morning, ten miles going from 8:05 to 6:45, and the only reason I could do it successfully is because the weather was insanely beautiful! I wish the cool mornings would stick around. In the summer heat I’m lucky to get one or two miles in under 8’s :-/

Reply

Love it! The bad runs leave such a fabulous contrast for those good runs that you KNOW are yet to come. Congrats on your new mileage! Youre getting there girl! Whoo Hoo! I sence BIG things!

Reply

I totally agree about Jillian and Anna!

Reply

Wow you are a beast- sounds like a GREAT run! I love The Biggest Loser but I haven’t seen it without Jillian- love that woman! If you are a fan of her, download her podcasts- they’re great for long runs!

Today was a rest day for me so instead of hitting up the gym this morning, I was flippin’ pancakes :D!

Reply

Anna’s not doing it for me-I miss Jillian too! Glad that Bob is still around though and Dolvett isnt too shabby ;) At least Jillians podcasts are still alive and well-I totally agree that theyre great for long runs

Reply

SO happy your run was fab girlfriend! Sometimes the bad runs are a necessary evil to make our good runs that much more amazing and endorphin-packed :)

Question for ya – I’m on the market for a home treadmill and I was wondering what brand/model yours is and whether you recommend it. I need something extra sturdy for those speedy workouts when the ‘mill takes a pounding. I am looking at the gym-quality ones but some are in the $5000 range and that’s just not in the budget! If you don’t mind my asking, was yours this pricey? Appreciate your advice :)

Reply

OH GIRL…We are obsessed with out treadmill and I think it was only 1,000…..billy gave it to me for my bday! It is the Nordictrack C900 and I like it better than our the crazy expensive ones at our gym!! I am obsessed. Their are courses you can do, different workouts it has for you to do to (with Jillian talking to you at the same time) and awesome fan and speakers and the treadmill part is really quiet! Hope that helps!! Let me know what you think!

Reply

My run today is an easy track workout after work, then I’m trading my cooking for my massage therapist friend to come over and work on my IT band! It’s going to be great!

Reply

Yay for a great run!! Awesome!

Reply

Agreed on Anna. I love BL and I like the new things they always incorporate into the show, like NFL night! I can only imagine the amount of money spent on the show, but at the same time it’s for a good cause and at this point they aren’t being TOO ridiculous yet.

Reply

YAY for a GREAT run :D
& I miss Jillian too..not the same without her.

Reply

I’m glad you had a good run! I can’t believe how fast you can ramp up your mileage! Good for you! I think New York may be in the cards for you yet! You’re always so motivating and I love how you make sure that everyone knows that running isn’t always fun even for you!
I want to love the Altra running shoes. I tried on the Eve a month ago and they are just too tight on the top of my foot, just like the Vibrams. I was really disappointed. Hope you are having a great day!

Reply

I’m going out to run 8 in the rain! Can’t wait!

Reply

Hey girly! I’m going to PT today, so it’s a semi-chill workout day…unless of course I decide to bike some more afterwards (although eating the roast that currently cooking in the crock pot sounds better right now…but I’m hungry so that feeling may change). I haven’t been watching the Biggest Loser, but I have been watching Dancing with the Stars (LOVE THAT SHOW!). Hope your having a good week!

Reply

I am behind on BL because our stupid DVR didn’t work, but based on the first episode, loved the new trainer, not into Anna. So cool you can watch while you run! My workout today was 7 easy miles with a friend before work – best start to the day ever!

Reply

This post was just what I needed! I did an 11 miler yesterday and it was ROUGH. I’m doing a 1/2 marathon in a few weeks and I kept thinking “how in the WORLD am I going to do this?!? I want to puke!” Anyway, I know it was just a “bad run” and there is a reason I sign up for those dang races…

Reply

Love reading this. The bad runs make the good ones feel so much better!!!

LOVING BL this season, I think you know Dolvett is my fav, though I do love Bob and he seems to be a bit more Jillian-esque too! The NFL episode this week is fun to watch b/c they are surrounded by these fit pro fb players!!!

Reply

Question – do you always run at a 1% incline? I’ve recently started running again and I notice that 1% is definitely harder than .5 or 0. I read once that 1% is more like running outside. Do you think that’s true??!

Thanks!

Reply

I love watching movies while running on the treadmill!!

Reply

I totally stopped watching Biggest Loser this season. Deleted it off of my DVR. Shocking!! I followed it faithfully for many years but after watching just 2 episodes I was totally over it. I replaced it with New Girl. Such a cute show!

ive been reading your blog for a while now, and i just love it. i think i found it via ruth’s blog, at redsoxwife. a lot of times my husband finds me laughing to myself on the couch reading a new post on ur blog. this usually leads to him patronizing me for reading your blog since i don’t actully know you (although i strangely feel like ive known you for years). but with 3 kids at home now, i do need like 2.4 seconds to myself, which usually includes reading your blog. you are absolutely hilarious, and thank you for all the pick me ups you provide in my day!

i started reading your blog when i was pregnant with our third munchkin. when i found ur blog, i couldnt stop reading it. i went to byu and graduated in 2010 in exercise science, fitness and wellness, so i am pretty fitness minded. but you totally inspired me to make sure to stay in shape so i can run again after our little gal came into this world! i exercised up to the day before she came, and this past friday, 8 weeks later, i was able to run 4 miles. i am trying to work myself up to a race sometime this winter, so we will see. thanks again for the laughter and inspiration you give!!!

Reply

LIZZIE!!! YOUR COMMENT MADE MY DAY!! Thank you so so much. Oh, I LOVE Ruth!! THREE KIDS, that is so awesome. Really, thank you so much for your sweet words. You went to BYU too!! That is awesome and your major is so cool. We sound a lot alike. You exercised the day before she came, you are my HERO!! CONGRATS on the 4 miles, that is AWESOME!! Wow!! What races are you looking into? I really am so so excited for you! Do you live in Utah?

Reply

im not sure about races yet! i want to do a 5k on thanksgiving, so i think that is where ill start. i want to eventually do a half marathon within the next year, i just need to sit down and look info up. i do dream of running the st. george marathon someday though! we sadly dont live in utah anymore. after we both graduated last year, we moved to missouri so my husband could work for his dad. we are probably here for the long haul. i do have 3 siblings and their spouses that live in provo, and i definately get a bit jealous of them sometimes! i just love the provo bubble! : )

Reply

Hey madam! Can you help me come up with a good plan for becoming a runner? I haven’t done any kind of distance in the past 6 month so I am pretty much starting from scratch!

Reply

I know this post is old, but I’ll comment anyway. I love that we have the same treadmill. Don’t you just love it? I also did not like Anna this season. I just don’t think she was the right fit.

I love when running starts to feel GOOD again. That’s where I am at right now and I am thrilled about it!
