Optimizing Mileage and Cereal Faceplant

Subway hooked us up for dinner last night at Parent/Teacher conference.  You are welcome for the blurry picture.  It was kind of tough asking my student and their parent to hold the convo for a minute so that I could take a picture of my food to show all of my best internet friends.

I don’t know if I will ever be able to eat fruit without fruit dip again in my entire life.

Photo copy

After I ate that, all I could think of was having one of these….King sized only, I was not going to even think about messing around with a single serving bar.

Turns out 7-11 and Walmart DO NOT deliver. I called many times, I received the same answer each and every time.   Then it was time to go home, and it was already past my bedtime.

Was I hungry when I came home?  No siree.

Did I faceplant into a mug(S) of cereal right after I changed into PJ’s?  What do you think……….stress/tired/annoyed eating at its finest:)

As I am increasing my mileage I really want to be just a little smarter than my normal…let’s see how many miles I can run in a week before I can make my bones crack mentality.   I ran on Wednesday and GASP….I won’t be running again until SATURDAY, heaven forbid:)

I found an AWESOME article at Runningtimes.com (my obsession) by Peter Pftzinger about OPTIMIZING your mileage.  It is an awesome article and when I came across this section I knew it was written just for me:

Another way to improve your aerobic base, with less risk of injury, is by aerobic crosstraining. Any form of aerobic training causes “central” adaptations that improve your cardiovascular system (e.g., ability of your heart to pump more blood per contraction), and “peripheral” adaptations within the working muscles. Therefore, all aerobic training is beneficial, but the closer the activity simulates running, the more transferable the adaptations in the muscles will be. The types of crosstraining with the greatest cross-over to running include: deep-water running, elliptical training, stair climbing, cross-country skiing (classic technique) and, to a somewhat lesser extent, cycling. Crosstraining is particularly important if you have a propensity toward injury, or if you live where winter or summer weather interferes with your training.

Ellipctical/bike/stair climber…….I look forward to our early morning dates together for the next rest of my life when I am not with my first love, running.

Modern Family, The Office, and Dexter! I love the elliptical when I am not running. And cereal for me too, girl. Honey Bunches of Oats…meet your maker. :)

I definitely think that cross training is crucial to ward of injury and help build endurance and an aerobic base. My favorite is spinning but I also think that strength training is really important too.

I crave cereal when I’ve had a tough day too!

Reply

ITA with strength training! I’m doing New Rules of Lifting for Abs, and it’s been SO beneficial.

Reply

I missed Modern Family last night, but totally am going to catch it later. I also wanted to see Revenge.

I don’t have much or really any experience with training, but deep-water running sounds really cool!

Reply

Ah, I LOVE Modern Family…unfortunately I am a super lame-o and go to bed at 9, so I am going to have to catch it on abc.com.

What doesn’t stand a chance when I am stressed? Pretty much any baked good within reach!

Reply

Glee and Vampire Diaries :)
Yes, I am a HUGE believer in cross training, thought I used to be a hater I now love the elliptical.

Timing is everything, One day, when my dagthuer is ready, she told us she needs to go pee pee. We keep encourage her and give her sticker for being dry. Watch her body clock, and send her same time everyday. Do use those plastic underwear, it is not working.

Confession: I have a mug of cereal every day when I get home from work. I don’t know why I think it’s better in a mug, but I do. I put some almond butter on top and kind of ….mix it up. IDEK, it probably looks disgusting, but it’s delicious and I look forward to it ALL DAY. No joke.

<3 Modern Family! Hilarious!

Food that doesn't stand a chance? The almond butter. It's so smooth and happy and I can eat it with a spoon. I love things I can eat with a spoon.

Oh, cross training. I hate it and sometimes love it. After this marathon coming, I'll do a week of it to recover, and then hop back into running. I usually do the bike and elliptical. But lately, the stair master makes me super happy!

I really love pool running. A lot. But, the deal is: the morning swim group at the Y is uber-territorial. Once, I went when I was injured and I swear there was a collective gasp. There's a large man who won't "let" anyone in his lane (meant for 2 or more) and he told me as much. (The other lanes appear to be filled with Olympic swimmers.) Thinking it might be ok (since I also pay for my membership!) I jumped in and ended up kicking the wall (hard) trying to accommodate him. Sigh. So I am sticking with the gym section.

cereal lover ALL THE WAY when i am STARVING and no time to cook…

So I’m in the same boat as you. I kept getting hurt, then coming back too fast and being dumb and getting hurt again. Finally I’ve smartened up.

What I realized I was doing was this- I would run x number of miles and then if it didn’t reach x amount of calories or 1 hour of cardio I would finish up the hour of cardio… Now finally I took a step back and realized that meant I wasn’t giving my body and recovery time and I was over working it. Doing 1 hour of cardio every day isn’t ideal. If I want to be a stronger runner I need to optimize my miles and cardio on that day. So now I just do x amount of miles on that day. I’ve been running only about 5 times a week maybe 4 if it’s a heavy week, cross training the other 2 and rest one day. After I run I do other things than cardio like Nike Training Club ( I seriously suggest you go download it for your Iphone because it’s amazing) or lifting or something. I’ve honestly felt a ton better physcially and I like the challenge of building muscle so I don’t feel like I’m being a bum just doing 5 miles and not doing any more cardio.

Also I think it makes me more realistic in life and not putting so much pressure on working out to stay “fit” because really, abs are made in the kitchen…not the gym!!

^^Sorry if I just rambled… I’m avoiding writing a paper

Cross training helps SO much!! It gives your body a break, while challenging it at the same time. Calls on various muscles that might be underused when you’re doing your “base” exercise.

Reply

Modern Family. I was on a plane last night when it came on and I made the hubs promise to save it for me when I got back.
Spin class would be my favorite cross-training exercise.
Double stuffed oreos don’t last long in my house.

I have modern family waiting for me on my DVR, i cant wait to have a date with it this weekend! i’m also reallllly looking forward to dexter!

i DEF think crosstraining helps prevent injuries..I dont think its good to be running everyday. I started having trouble with my right heel after I started running 5 days a week :(

fave crosstraining = elliptical or spinning!!

i’m in love with chips, its a terrible love affair, but its my go to food alot of the times. either that or animal crackers with nutella :)

Reply

P.S. if i had a king size cookies and cream bar, you better bet itd be gone in negative seconds <3

Aaah, I’m sorry you’re stressed, Janae! <3 But hey, there's always cereal or chocoalte to help with those feelings ;-) in more happy news, your hair looks so pretty in the cereal faceplanting photo!
I love to chow down on a heaping plate of baked kabocha squash when I am stressed – something about the quantity and the warmth and the comfortingness of it makes me crave it so much, I feel like it helps me calm down, lol! :-P Plus, I get a beta carotene tan…two birds, one stone ;-)
I definitely think cross training helps prevent or avoid injury – mixing up workouts means that certain muscles don't get overtaxed, in my mind, or certain joints. I love mixing yoga, strength training, spinning, the arc trainer, hiking, and outdoor biking…but my true love is yoga!
Big smiles, missy! <3 xyx

Survivor. Amazing Race. Anything on Bravo.
I do think crosstraining helps. I don’t really have a favorite though.
I work from home and luckily I tend towards fruit and carrots when I am stressed. But then there are the carbs.

That blurb makes me happy considering I cut my running to 3 days a week and added in 2 cross training days instead for this half training :) Maybe I’m doing something right?! haha
Biking is my drug of choice right now for cross training!

Hi Janae-
I found your blog when I was injured and I love it-you are an amazing runner and I love your amazing positive attitude.FWIW I am also returning from injury(tibial sfx),had to sit out Boston:(,and I live for your food pics!!(I am also a pastry chef with a huge sour patch kids habit).Anyway-I have learned the hard way about cross-training.Now I am loving the pool and my new road bike-so incredible you just did a century!!
Um,stress food?I love snacky food when I’m stressed(well, even when I’m not)-goldfish,cheez-its,or any kind of gummy candy.
Anyway-my kids had their back-to-school night this week-I bet it is stressful on teachers.Just so you know you are very much appreciated!!!!

I am still amazed at your positivity when you can’t fully run. I envy that because when I am/was injured – I am probably the most negative person. Running is one of my two “rocks” with my wife being the other one in my life. They are cornerstones of me. I don’t know how you do it with positivity but its awesome to read…I must admit.

I love cross training and wish I had all elliptical trainer at home because that’s my favorite activity.

My stress food is usually anything that’s more bite-sized like dry cereal, peanut, raisins, chocolate chips or everything mixed together!

Modern Family and Parenthood!

I am looking forward to Dexter! I only have to wait until Oct 2 and I can’t wait.

Cereal is not safe in my home. I eat it any chance I get!

Cross training — I don’t think I do enough of it, but I get on the elliptical 1-2x per week and I do strength training 2-3x as well, Not sure if that actually counts as cross training, but it sure seems to help my performance.

Reply

Love this post!!! I want to get back into cross-training, especially cycling. I just got a road bike this summer and I feel like I’m still figuring it out. :) my goner food is mini bagels. Yum, carbs!!!

Reply

I can’t wait for The Office! I love that show so much!
I for sure think cross-training helps with reducing the risk of injury. And it’s nice to mix things up :)
When I’m stressed out I want chocolate. Anything chocolate!

Reply

HOLY GOODNESS, MODERN FAMILY helps make my life feel fulfilled. For realzies. I’m also hecka obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy.

I do think that cross-training HELPS prevent injuries. Running is my game, but swimming is a close second. I don’t have any wise words about cross-training and the prevention of injuries, though I do believe in it :) (Can you please give me the Profound Statement of the Day Award”?)

Stress Food: Cake. Mmmmmm, cake. Choco preferably.

HAPPY FRIDAY! I hope you have a stress-free day :)

Reply

I’m the same way with cereal! We’re actually out at home, so I stopped at Walmart on the way to work to restock.

I think cross training helps prevent injury if it means you’re running less, but if you’re running the same amount AND cross training, there’s probably no difference.

Reply

If I’m stressed I usually want something salty so pickles or chips get demolished!

My favorite cross training is definitely road biking too. I looooove it! I’m gonna be so so sad when it gets cold and dark out!

And I love everything on Bravo esp the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

I most definitely purchased a king-size cookies & cream hershey bar from one of my students selling them for fundraising yesterday…. yummmm!

I don’t even know what just happened with that comment. Can you tell how tired I am!? I’m not even going to try again… BUT I am with you on Modern Family, I could not stop laughing last night

Reply

I love Modern Family! Did you watch the new one last night? What did you think of the new Lily? My husband and I were freaking out that they didn’t even replace her with a little girl the same age, its like she grew twice as fast as everyone else! But she is super adorable none the less!
As for crosstraining, I’m still figuring it out while I take care of my bum knee. Cycling seems to be ok, or anything low impact except the elliptical. I don’t know why but the elliptical has always bothered my knees, even before I got hurt. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?

Reply

After you start training smarter, isn’t is strange (almost comical) to look back on old habits? I cringe at some of the junk miles i ran for the sake of discipline. The running journey (aka life) it is a wonderful thing!

I find the day after conferences to be a long day. Pretty sure you should treat yourself to a cereal faceplant again tonight if needed.

Reply

Do you mind if I use your comment as my next post topic….I just loved it so much!!! Hope you are having an awesome day!

I’d be honored if you used it :)

Cereal is the BEST! That’s what I had for dinner last night. Sometimes you just HAVE to have those cereal for dinner kind of nights :)

Reply

I’m trying to be smart with my cross-training, too! I’m craving runs every morning because it’s starting to cool off a bit here, but I’m focusing on other fitness as well like biking, yoga, Pilates, etc. I should probably get to the gym for some elliptical, but I hate being indoors! I need an outdoor elliptical. :)

Reply

Show of choice… Big Bang Theory!! it brings out my inner nerd.

Reply

I was super excited for the premier of Dancing with the Stars, and can’t wait until Vampire Diaries comes back!

Peanut butter and cereal are my demise.

And I mostly do elliptical for cross training. I’m hoping that “speed work” on the elliptical will transfer into faster running times, as I think doing speed work while running is a bit too risky for me in terms of injury. After my first marathon (just over two weeks!) I may try to very slowly incorporate more speed work (like, basically, pick up the pace for a minute, then ease off for a while, then gradually increase that minute…)… until then, elliptical sprints here I come!

Reply

Great thoughts about cross training. Have you read much about the Run Less, Run Faster plan? I feel like it would be perfect for you. It has only 3 runs each week, but they are HARD runs-one speed day, one with a tempo run and one long run. In between you fit in lots of cross training. People seem to have far fewer injuries with it. You should definitely research it or get your hands on the book!
:)

Yum those cookies and cream candy bars are the bomb! I haven’t had one in ages.

I am looking forward to Biggest Looser. Love it!

And I definitely think that everyone is so so different when it comes to training. Some people’s bodies can handle the high miles and others cannot. I do think that cross training makes me a stronger runner and I am going to focus adding 1 cross training day a week when I start up training for Boston.

Reply

OH, deep water running. every “graceful” person’s worst enemy. ;)

I’m psyyyched for Glee and New Girl. I’m loving both!

Reply

Dancing with the Stars, I guesss. I wanted to watch “new girl” but I forgot. I saw one episode of Modern Family and laughed my butt off. I want to catch up and start watching it!

Right now I’m loving swimming. Unfortunately, not optimum cross-training for running. Ooof.

Goner in my kitchen? Hmmm… Most likely pudding/whipped cream. Frozen grapes, cottage cheese, anything that doesn’t need preparing.

Reply

My favorite cross training at the moment is rock climbing, I know I know its not crazy cardio but it really works on strengthening my core. Which really helps with power and control on my bike! I love that you are finding the love of road biking.

Rock climbing leaves me sore for days…..such an amazing workout! Wish we could ride together!!!

Sometimes I hate cross training but I know it’s good for me to I like it sometimes. I’m learning to like it!!

I love criminal minds and the big bang theory!

I definitely think cross-training is so important! Have you ever done the water running? I haven’t, but I’ve seen people do it and it looks really hard! I’m looking forward to so many shows that it’s kind of ridic haha…but I can’t wait for Bones- sadly though it isn’t coming back til november.

Reply

Hawaii Five-0!!! And New Girl (I think that’s the name), and Big Bang Theory. And Top Chef. Okay, I’m done now.

Cross-training definitely helps!!!

Food – lately it’s cereal or cinnamon almonds. Also, rosemary raisin crackers from Trader Joe’s. :)

Reply

I am also excited for MODERN FAMILY (“Only WE touch our women when they don’t want us to!” hahah gold Phil, gold.)

And, stoked for the ING Hartford Marathon on OCTOBER 15! Whattt! (I’m running the half).

AND, most recent chunk of news, you’re looking at (well not really but you get what I mean) a soon-to-be GIRLS ON THE RUN COACH! I cannot express in words how excited I am so I won’t try.

Cross-training helps for sure and TREADMILL TRAINING! I am so an advocate. My last two injuries occured during outdoor training runs on pavement. Not saying outdoor training is bad or wrong, but it just doesn’t seem to work for me.

Food that doesn’t stand a chance – coffee. Lately I drink it like it’s a life source. So bad I know!

Ahhhhh girl that is the best news ever! Promise to tell me all about it?!?

Promise promise! I meet with the program lead in mid-October :) :)

Biggest loser, I guess it’s already started so I don’t have to look forward to it anymore. I love that show.

I’ve worked really hard on crosstraining this year and I can tell a big difference. I’m stronger and faster. It’s awesome. I ride my bike and row on my rowing machine.

Anything chocolate. Or if I don’t have anythign chocolate I put nutella on anything I can find.

Reply

oh. my. gosh. I love Modern Family!

If I have had a stressful day and I have left over cookie dough in my fridge or freezer it is bad news. I eat it until I get a stomach ache while telling myself, “I am eating like 10 cookies. This is not good.”

Reply

i used to hate cross training because it meant not running, but now i like biking. i also throw in the stair climber every once in awhile. I’m not super in love with any cross training, but I do like them…especially when I sit on the bike for hours and read awesome books

3. Goner food? Archer Farm’s “nutrition” bars. What I think they mean is, “crack in the form of “nutrition” bars” Yeah. Those.
