Multi-tasking workout at its finest

Today after church I was feeling the need to do something.  I have neglected my treadmill for a very long time and it told me the other day how bad I was hurting because of it so I decided to use it today.

I walked for an hour while watching house hunters while on an incline while reading blogs on my ipad while wearing dirty shorts while thinking about the fact that I think I might be a little undertrained for my Century bike ride in less than two weeks…oops.

I have never ran a race underprepared but for some reason I am thinking on a bike it is okay……hmmmmm, lets see how this works out.

B-sugar and I are going to try and get in a LONG ride tomorrow and I am just going to count that as all the training I need with some shorter rides over the next few weeks.  We will see how I feel tomorrow about my whole undertraining idea thing working out for me:)

What was your workout today?  Was today a rest day for anyone?

Have you ever under-trained for a race?  What happened?

My workout of the day…? Let’s see I rolled out of bed and wiggled into my outfit of the day, yet that was it.
Any time I find myself breaking a bit of a sweat I call it a workout!

I am feeling like I’ll be undertrained for my half in October. I went on a 4 mi [death] run today and got my work cut out for me. That’s what happens when you get hurt for months on end then return to a sweltering hot summer!

I was undertrained for my first and only half-marathon. I actually hadn’t trained because I was running it for someone else who was hurt and couldn’t do it. She asked me 3 days before the race.
I was used to running about 8 miles 4 times a week but hadn’t ever run further than that. Furthermore, I had taken 2 weeks off before the race because of some nagging hip pain.
However, come race day I felt good and ran it in 1:39:37. You can’t underestimate the effects of adrenaline! (PS: I couldn’t run for 2 weeks afterwards, haha.)

Today I felt like doing a long run..so I did. Lol. Well, long-ish; first one since I’ve been injured, and the whole time I was pain free. 8D 16 miles/ a little over 2 hrs, (I wish I had a Garmin, I use my Ironman Timex and then mapmyrun it), then did some drills, stretched, did core, and foamrolled<– most important thing. For me to not get injured again it is vital I stretch and foamroll!

todays workout was deep cleaning my house. I’m talking moving furniture, cleaning the baseboards, busting out the wood oil for all our cupboards/cabinets/doors. I had to strip down to a pair of shorts and a sports bra cuz I was working up such a sweat! ;)

I’ve always been pretty prepared for races. I follow my running schedule pretty closely. Unless I get injured. Like I am now. but whatever. I’m gonna banish myself to the elliptical for the next week, then shoot for a long run on saturday. :)

Today was a rest day for me! And so excited about it!! 25ish days until my first ever half marathon!! Yesterday was 10 miles, and this week added up to 25! And I get Mexican tonight. So happy…

I read that you should be able to bike 3x your longest ride. So I guess if you’ve done recent rides that were 35-40 miles long you should be able to do a century. That was in a beginner cycling book by Bicycling Mag. I heard somewhere else that If your weekly miles add up to around the distance you’ll be going, you should be fine too. I don’t know where I heard that. It’s definitely different than training to run long distance! I think you will be fine, just use chamois cream to prevent saddle sores!

4.5 mile run… my runnings been struggling though, I don’t know if it’s the hills I’ve been trying to add or what, but I haven’t been feeling as on my game. I love your workout room by the way with the pics on the wall and everything!

I ran with a group at a local running shop- 7 miles super easy since I am doing a trail race tomorrow.
I’ve been under trained at races many times- the last 1/2 just feels really, really long. I think you’ll be fine on the bike esp if the course isnt too hilly. Biking it all about nutrition. Under trained is always better than over trained!

Rest day for me!! Icing my shins and watching the US open!

Rest day today! Gotta love Sundays :)

Agreed!!

Sunday’s are my rest day! My most favorite day of the week for sure!

I ran a half marathon without training and took 14 minutes off my time… Don’t ask how. I just think my legs must have been rested! You will do fine, girl :)

Reply

that’s AWESOME!!! I find I run best after a few days rest :)

Reply

When I first started running I was basically undertrained for everything. The furthest I had ran before my half marathon was 6 miles. So I would say if you can do at least half the distance you should be just fine. :) Or maybe you could just ride in a wagon and let Billy pull you? Yep that is probably the best idea! :)

Today I went standup paddleboarding and it was awesome- hardly felt like a workout but now I am tired- great core workout!

i am SO EXCITED for your bike race its gonna be AWESOME!!!!!!!
p90x plyo for me today! enjoy the long weekend<3

I did a BodyRock workout & C25K except I’m repeating week 5 because I could barely run 8-min straight & the crazy plan told me I had to run 20-min straight on day 3, so yeah…repeating day 1 & 2 this week, too. ;)

Wow, I love your viewing set-up for the treadmill! ;)

Reply

I love your treadmill set up ;) ….today IS my rest day and even though I want to go for a run right now, my ankle has been bothering me so I’ll take the FULL day to rest :)

I’m very undertrained! I’m doing a sprint triathlon next weekend and I’m definitely feeling like I’m not ready AT ALL. Yikes!

I’m super excited for your century ride! And a little jealous! I have to wait to commit to one but after March 2012, I’m in!

I think I’ll be a little undertrained for my marathon in November. Yikes. It’s sneaking up on me.

My workout today was Relay portion of a half marathon! It was really fun!

I got up early (6:30 on a Sunday!!!) and was going to head out for a run…then realized it was raining. So I did a 40 minute fat-burning yoga workout instead. It felt so good to stretch!!!

Reply

I only worked out for 30 minutes today because we had company over and I had to clean. So it was somewhat of a rest day.
P.S. I love how you called Billy B-Sugar. I laughed :)

I have not been on my treadmill in quite a while. Tomorrow I will be using it. We are suppose to have lots of rain and I want to stick to my training program! I am sure you will do great in the bike race!!

Reply

Yep… Total rest day… I’ve already had three naps. So nice.
And yeah, undertraing can really hurt, depending on how far behind you are. Like the first race I ever ran in college… Not pretty and not fun. I got my butt kicked. But things improved. It was a great learning experience!! :)

Today was most definitely a rest day! I call it Sloth Sunday. I did undertrain for a race once. A trail half marathon. On advanced, single track bike trails. It did not go well. But I survived. After about mile 2, I was alone the entire time. But I survived.

Workout today was napping and eating! I love my Sunday rest days! But tomorrow we are going on a family bike ride in Austin and I’m so excited! I love your little treadmill set-up. That’s my dream someday, to have a treadmill room!

The only part of your body that’s really going to be hurtin’ after your century can’t really be trained. And may I suggest Chamois Buttr for that. Or a couple of others. You’ll do great on the Century ride.

BAHAHAHA Thank you and I am quite positive you are right about that:) Thanks for the Chamois Buttr….did you get it online or at a bike shop?

When Adam & I were newly married, I made the mistake of selling our treadmill before we moved to California. While in California, I found a great deal on an elliptical at a garage sale. I love it, but miss my treadmill. Any suggestions on purchasing a new one and how twist my hubby’s arm into letting me get a new one?

Reply

Do you want me to call Adam and talk to him about the importance of having a treadmill? Seriously, you need one! We have the Nordic Track C900 and it is absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! I think you should start a treadmill jar and keep filling it with change and maybe he will get the hint of how badly you want it and get you one:)

I went on a 55 walk with Tyler… it was awesome!

Reply

Hahaha, I just love your little shelf in front of the treadmill.

Workout today was a mix of strength training circuits!

Sunday was a rest day for me, but today is race day! I’m a little scared, but excited. It’s supposed to be an awesome race course!

Reply

I love your running room. The pictures are so inspirational!! & I love the shelf you have for your computer- doesn’t get much better :)

Reply

you are such a determined athlete, if you put your mind to it…you will find out a way to get through the century! You also seem to really enjoy the bike, so go out there and own it!

BTW – I wish I had my own treadmill, one day….sigh…

Reply

With your fitness level I’m sure you will be just fine. :)

My workout yesterday was 5 miles which was a personal distance record for me! (I know, it doesn’t compare to the distances you used to run). Today I am resting, my legs are a little tired. May try and go do a short run to loosen them up.

Reply

ahaha wearing dirty shorts counts as a multi tasking item?!?! Incredible! Your insights illuminate my life!! ;D

I definitely under-trained for my first marathon: I went from running 14 miles max to suddenly jumping in with a 23-miler a month before the event, sticking to 10 miles or less for the intervening weeks and then just ‘winging’ the marathon. I didn’t train for it at all…in fact I’d say it’s far better to be slightly undertrained: I overtrained for my third one and didn’t even make it to the start line due to stress fractures, which have ruled out my fourth and fifth ones too :(

You are going to kill that century :D

Yes undertraining for a bike ride I agree is somewhat acceptable, unlike undertraining for a marathon which causes horrible injuries often.

Each year I do this bike ride in September it is a 125 mile ride for charity, and I never feel ready. The longest I do in prep is an 80-90 miler. It all works out fine in the end. Though it is a charity ride not a race, so every 15 miles or so there is a rest stop with snacks and stuff. I am not fast on the bike, but it is quite fun. It’s amazing how much FOOD you can eat when biking long distances. Before, during, after… mmmm food.

Good luck with the century! you will do just fine, with a 70 under your belt. The thing is with biking, you can just slow down a bit and get through it, unlike running. I wish I loved biking more than running, seems its so much better for the body. But, unfortunately nothing beats that running high…

Hey girl! Thanks so much for your comment! I am so so excite that you are looking into getting a treadmill! Billy actually did all of the research and surprised me with it! We have the nordictrack c900 and we love it! We have zero complaints and both of us use it all the time! The course runs you can do are awesome! It is quiet, the fan rocks and I love the speakers! What ones are you looking into?

Thanks for your input which is perfect bc that’s the EXACT one I was looking at. I love the fact that it folds up and has a hardcore motor. I was telling my BF about it last night and getting really excited and he just stared at me like I was a crazy person. Glad you love it-it’s going on my wish list :) Thanks again!
