Hiding the Monster and a Combover

We took your advice and went a little crazy at our nearest health foods store on some delicious WHOLE GRAINS. Too bad the dried fruit was $80 a lb or something otherwise I would have loaded up on dried mango and papaya and stuck it in my satchel for emergency (every hour) food needs.  PS buying grains this way was CRAZY CHEAP (we were at Good Earth in Provo).

IMG 9513

We got from black rice, lentils, brown rice, oats, whole wheat pancake mix, bulgar and whole wheat flour.  We also stocked up on some PROTEIN too…case lot sale of tuna and black beans.

We forgot the whole grain pasta which I was super excited for…BOO.  Heaven forbid I get in my car and travel to the store to pick some up.  It’s okay I will make Billy go later while I sit on the couch and catch up on the Bachelor Pad.

IMG 9514

By the time we got home, it was almost nine so we had to make dinner quickly because the 987 pretzels that I ate on the way home did not make a dent in my stomach and I was turning into the monster that I hid from Billy throughout our whole courtship.

IMG 9516

Brown rice that we cooked in the rice cooker combined with broccoli and tuna that we cooked with olive oil and garlic.  Combine and eat.

Finished product:  happiness with a side of a comb over in a ‘Where’s Waldo’ shirt.

Awesome quote from an article in RUNNING TIMES that helps motivate me to consume higher-quality carbs than the ones I was eating:

You’d never think of using low-grade gasoline in a race car, so why fuel your runs with low-quality carbohydrates?

Packed with complex carbohydrates, protein and micronutrients, whole grains are the premium fuel for runners. “They are the basis for a high-performance diet,” says Suzanne Girard Eberle, board-certified sports dietitian and former U.S. 5,000m track champion. “Whole grains prepare our bodies mentally and physically for running, providing our muscles with their preferred fuel,” Eberle explains in her book Endurance Sports Nutrition.

———————————————————–

What was the last ‘homecooked meal’ that you made?  How are you going to fuel your RACE CAR?

Do you use a bowl or a plate more?

-I feel like I am always eating out of a bowl or tupperware container at home (cereal, salads, peaches and milk etc) and a plate at my parents house.

Favorite type of dried fruit?

-MANGO!!!

What online sources (besides blogs) do you go to to read about fitness/health?  I am always looking for great new sites.

-Runners World, Running Times, Woman’s Health Magazine, Livestrong.com.

I have to travel 2 hours for my nearest whole-foods grocer, so I doubt grain-buying will be happening anytime soon.

I hate it when my hair does that!

What is it about eating out of a bowl that is so much more satisfying than a plate?? Any guesses what is my go-to vehicle of food?? Speaking of ‘vehicles’, the last homecooked meal which I ‘fueled’ my body was this morning’s breakfast: peanut butter & banana oatmeal with egg whites stirred in! Breakfast of champions? I think so :)!

Ah! I don’t know about you, but after the whole season of Bachelor Pad, I am SO mad at Holly…I liked her less and less as the season went on, and the finale just solidified that I am not a fan of hers…Michael on the other hand, won my heart!

Brown rice and red quinoa are definitely my favs. And dried strawberries!

Love that quote by the way! I might have to put that on my fridge as a good reminder!

Reply

Quinoa is so so good! I normally don’t like rice, but I like the taste of this by itself or in salads. I am a huge fan of energy bars, so to up my intake of healthy grains I made quinoa bars with quinoa, whole wheat flour, dates, flaxseed, protein powder, agave, dates, your favorite mix-ins (and I add in almond butter or peanut butter because I’m addicted, just add about 1/4-1/3 cup
To this recipe) :) http://www.nomeatathlete.com/quinoa-protein-energy-bars/
i like to heat one up and spread a little pb or butter on it before a workout

I love my rice cooker so much! Have you ever tried wild rice?

I made a home cooked meal last night: French toast, scrambled eggs and fruit!

I definitely use a bowl more — it makes eating in front of the tv so much easier! You can just shovel it in.

Reply

We made coconut curries chickpeas with quinoa last night, soo yummy!
Mango and baby coconut for sure :)
Runners World, Oxygen and Clean Eating magazines.

More food fits in a bowl, sooo…bowl. I made whole wheat pasta with eggplant meatballs (seriously, so good!) last night and dumped as much as I could in my bowl!

Reply

Your homemade meal looks delicious! They have those bulk bins at a store about an hour from me…I guess I should go and check them out. Last homemade meal was pasta (surprise!) I swear I eat that 2 times a week without fail.

I lovee dried figs or apples :)

Reply

I love dried mango too!!! bEST food ever :)

We had homemade stir fry over quinoa–so SO good!

I love eating out of bowls!!! I’ve been making a lot of soups lately so that would be kinda hard to eat out of a plate :D

I love dried mangos and apples!! Dried fruit is sooo good!

I pretty much read your blog for fitness info. You do all the research and post it, and I read. It’s working well so far ;)

i recently had a baby and am finally getting to start running again! it feels AMAZING! i read ‘running for women’ by kara goucher before i started and it’s really helping me get back in the swing of things!
anyway, that whole grain quote is helpful!
last homecooked meal: pasta, shrimp, and steamed spinach with rolls!
dried fruit: strawberries!
i don’t really read any fitness magazines, but i should start!
LOVE your blog!
oh, one more thing! my husband ran cross country in high school, and when i told him a blogger i read coaches a team, he said, when she updates about the team, i want to read it. so i definitely showed him your post from tuesday!

I totally forgot about whole grain pasta. That’s what we eat, too. I switched to whole grain when Mike and I were dating…I don’t think he has any idea.

Bowls are way better. Less mess, more food!

The last home cooked meal I made was crustless spinach quiche. It was DELICIOUS!

Reply

Last night I made brown rice with pesto, veggies, and chicken sausage! It was great fuel after my 10 mile run, hr spin, 20 min swim! That and about 45678 swedish fish, fruit, a bomb homemade egg/cheese/pesto sandwich and chocolate milk!!!
Lately I have been all about the bowl! And Mango is my fave dried fruit as well!!!

Reply

YUM…that sounds so so good. Great job on your CRAZY WORKOUTS, you are my hero. Oh swedish fish is the best fuel:) Dang, I am craving pesto now!

Cherries probably! Or apples!

I love buying in bulk it lasts so much longer and it’s cheaper! I fuel my body with many while grains so I think I’m on the right track! I could probably use some more I have never tried black rice or bulgar. It depends what I’m eating but I like my salads cereal oatmeal things like that in a bowl but dinner and sandwhiches go on plates. I read runners world, shape, women’s mag, an I’m following things on twitter that gives updates and tips.

Reply

GIRL…I tried leaving a comment on your blog but I think it went to spam:( Okay, I am going to have to copy your twitter tips idea from runners world etc, that is BRILLIANT!!

Reply

Oh no I’ll try and figure out what’s wrong, thanks for trying though!! :)

Reply

that first picture is ridiculously awesome…for some reason, there isnt really a close health food store near us…closest whole foods is a good 25 minute drive away..LAME-O. which might be good for my pocket but sadface for my stomach. it would figure they open a whole foods right next to my parents as soon as I moved out…pshhhtt.

last homecooked meal I made was chicken fajitas with kevin (unless you count my lonely meals of sandwiches and veggies that I tend to make for myself every night?) :)

the meal that I tend to turn to on friday nights before my long runs the most is a simple grilled cheese on whole wheat and a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon..I swear, it does me OH so carby good.

I def use a plate more…I try to use smaller plates so i’m not always stuffing my face, but if i’m eating veggies, forget it. bring out the big guns, please!

i LURVE me some dried mango, so i feel you on that one!! (i wasnt sure if banana chips counted, but if they did, OMG)

i’m alllll about the runners world site. i used to look at womens health alot too, i need to check out running times one of these days.

Reply

I made grilled meats (steak for him, chicken for me), mashed potatoes, and green beans last night for dinner. Gotta love the grill…so simple, delicious, and easy!
I think I usually use a plate more… Bowls are frequently used too, but probably not as much as plates.
Favorite dried fruit=bananas or mangos!

Glad you got stocked up your whole grains!! I’m all about the whole grain carbs…yum, yum, yum. Bulk shopping is a great way to do it!

Reply

Last night was pancakes. But I made marinated flank steak and potatoes on Tues night. I am not good with the whole grains thing . Unless Cream of Wheat counts.
Definitely a plate. Do craisins count as dried fruit if they are in cookies?
I get Runner’s World in the mail and whatever I stumble across on the internet.
How are you going to fuel up for your ride?
The Kidless Kronicles
Wag More, Bark….

Reply

Um, why wasn’t I invited over for Tuesday night dinner…that sounds amazing and so did the pancakes:) Craisins in cookies are the BEST!! I think I am just going to use the aid stations. I will eat my normal egg/waffle sandwich before and grab something at each station…hopefully that works out ha!

Reply

I could live at the bulk bins. Such a bargain. And, if you aren’t sure you will love something, you can just get a bit, instead of a giant box or bag.

Reply

Janae, you are cracking me up. I love buying things in bulk (barley, couscous, quinoa, oh my!), and I have this kind of bowl obsession. We have bowls of all sizes. Little ones (cute Asian rice bowls), big soup bowls, and I sometimes just use a giant pyrex bowl to eat salad out of (kind of like a trough). I also love spoons. We have so many SPOONS! They’re usually the only utensils in the dishwasher.

Dried mangos! Yes! The best! IMO, they have to be soft and I don’t like added sugar. But I have a complete inability to have any self control with dried mango, so I buy a pack to eat on the way home from the store and the 2nd is to eat the next day. HA!

The hunger monster! Ooof. I call it hangry. Hungry and angry. ROWR. FEED ME.

My sister says if you want to be friends with me, you should carry food in your purse at all times. I require feeding, apparently!

Reply

HANGRY…that is awesome. Yes, billy always has an emergency bag of skittles with him at all times in case the beast comes out. We are a lot alike:) PS I need more spoons!

Reply

looks like a fun shopping trip! Last night I made spaghetti and whole wheat soda bread!!! :D

Reply

Hahaha you and your combover cracked me up!

Reply

I love bowls! It annoys my husband because the whole top of our dishwasher is always packed with 2 or 3 plates in the bottom rack. Oh well – I’m worth it:)
My favorite dried fruit is dried peaches from Trader Joes! Have you ever tried them? So amazing. I can eat a thousand of them. Thanks for the reminder about whole grains! I’m working on it too, but I really don’t like whole grain bread, so I have to be more creative than some. I’m having quinoa with mushrooms and spinach for lunch:)

Reply

DRIED PEACHES….um that sounds heavenly. Next trip to TJ’s in Cali I will be stocking up on those big time! Your lunch sounds AMAZING!

Reply

Um, we for sure can meet up. Or more like you will see me on the side of the road whining about my neck, or crotch, or calves, or quads. And it will most likely be mile two…so keep your eyes open! Kapeesh? ;)

Reply

WHATEVER…you are going to rock it. You can find me at the cookies and milk station eating sleeves of cookies at a time!

Reply

We had broiled salmon with israeli couscous + green beans last night :) I try to use a plate most times so I can actually see my food laid out like a pie shape and try to fill half of it with veggies and then split the other half between protein and whole grains :)

Reply

I am officially inviting myself over for dinner. That looked delicious! I would like to have the mixer bowl of salad too. Then, a trip to Yogurtland. Does this sound like the perfect plan or what? Enjoy your day!

COME OVER!!! Seriously, I am holding you to our perfect date night:)

Reply

The last home-cooked meal was grilled wahoo, couscous, and spinach sauteed with garlic.

Reply

YUM…..can I come over?!?!

Reply

I love the comb over :) and your grains

I just wanted to tell you a funny story. So I just started reading “runner’s world” and that’s b/c my library carries them now! :D so yesterday when I was there I couldn’t find the Oct issue….so I asked one of the girls that worked there and said “is there any way to find out if someone has taken a magazine out and/or any way to put a hold on it when it comes back” she said no and that there was no way to track magazines. I said “oh too bad I was really looking forward to this issue of runner world” and she laughed and said “I have it” I am like “what??” she said “yep, it’s me who has it out right now. I’ll finish it and bring it back for you and make sure I put it on the bottom of the pile” – Funny. (I thought it was anyway) so then we began discussing running and she told me where there was a track near by I could use for speed training :) – I don’t know the area very well

I am so happy today! I think that mag is soooo informative!

Reply

AHHH THAT IS AWESOME. Seriously, Runners World rocks and I am stoked that you have a track close by….can’t wait to read all about your speed workouts:)

Reply

HAHA that does NOT qualify as a comb over silly. Unless there is a bald spot under there that we dont know about.

Reply

You caught me…..

Reply

For supper last night I made steamed balsamic kale, quinoa, and grilled salmon with lemon, dill and pepper, it was delicious and I can’t wait to eat the leftovers for lunch today!
I love dried bananas and mangoes
Runner’s World, Women’s health magazine, clean eating magazine, and the eat-clean diet.
Thanks for having such an awesome, entertaining blog!

Reply

HEATHER!! That sounds incredible. Can I come help you finish off the leftovers? Thank you for your sweet comment, you made my day!

Reply

Seriously, you never take a bad picture. Even the funny one’s, or after a workout, you look good!
The last homecooked meal I made was burrito casserole. Not exactly healthy, but really tasty! I usually like to fuel my body by eating 6 small meals a day, that include a lean protein with complex carbohydrates. I’m never hungry and it allows me to get creative in the kitchen. I’m a plate person, unless it’s a casserole, or cereal then I use a bow. My favorite type of dried fruit would be cranberries. I add them to a lot of things…cookies, cereal, oatmeal, toast or I eat them by themselves. I read Runner’s World and Oxygen Magazine. I also like Shape magazine for new ideas on workouts.

Reply

Thanks Tabaitha….how much is Billy paying you to be so nice to me? Burrito casserole…that sounds AMAZING!! Cranberries are heavenly and should be added to everything.

Reply

I really like getting bulk protein from those bulk bins and adding it to soup (like chili and lentil soup), it’s SO much cheaper than the grocery store…and delicious!

Reply

I LOVE THIS QUOTE!! it is SO SO TRUE!!!!!
i am such a bowl/ tupperware girl for sure…plates when i am home but bowls and tupperware containers @ my apartment 24/7.
and I AM OBSESSED with dried mangos oh and cranberries SO GOOD!!!
your meal looks DELICIOUSSSSS<3

Reply

So jealous of that wall of goodness. I want a store near me that has one of those!

My last homecooked meal was breakfast for dinner on Tuesday night. That counts, right?

I love eating out of a bowl. There’s just something so comforting about it and more fun.

Reply

do you ever get the just mango dried mangoes at trader joes? they’re cheaper than the ones at whole foods and just as tasty! i love them and eat them out in the field all the time!

Reply

Dinner looks good! Travis’ favorite go-to meal in college (and still today) is macaroni and cheese with a can of tuna mixed in. Super easy, kinda healthy.

Reply

I LOVE trader joe’s “just mangos.” SO FREAKING GOOD.

aaaand holy wow, I saw that picture and thought you were in a mr. bulky’s candy store, and my heart lit up.

whole grains by the container are fun, too… but let’s be honest, whoppers and swedish fish and jelly bellies are better. ;)

Reply

What is Mr. Bulky’s? We don’t have that boo…… I totally agree on candy bins being way better than rice and oats ha!

Reply

The bulk food aisle is my best friend. I hate wasting food so I can always get the perfect amount for super cheap! Plus, they have an amazing chocolate section at the market by my house :)

I try to make a home cooked meal every day because it’s automatic leftovers for lunch the next day, but this week has been crazy and I didn’t go grocery shopping over the weekend so I’ve been stuck with not so great foods. Next week its back to healthy home cooked meals!

Reply

HEY GORGEOUS GIRL…I tried to leave a comment on your blog but I think it went to spam..save me! That is such a great idea to make enough for leftovers for lunch the next day. I want an awesome chocolate section:(

Reply

I like eating out of bowls better too! I don’t know why..I just do. Especially for pasta dishes.
That place you guys went to for the grains looks AWESOME! Such a good idea to buy them in bulk, rather than a little at a time..you know you will eat them, so mine as well stock up.
Your dinner sounds really good- & simple, which makes it perfect :D Might have to make it this upcoming week!

I love Medjool dates.

…and dried pineapple is amazing (although I know that they add colour and sulfates and other crap to it so I try not to eat it too often)

My favourite raisins are Sun-Maid. No added oils!

Great quote!
You are to cute with your rice and broccoli :)

Reply

Hahaha at the monster part. That is so me. When I’m hungry … it’s just … bad. I’m irrational, crabby, bitchy, moody, etc. My husband didn’t really discover that until after we got married. I do my part by trying to prepare ahead of time by snacking a little to tide me over when I think the monster might come out. Also, my co-workers have experienced this too, when we had to travel together for a work conference. It was slightly embarrassing, but, I can’t help it.

Reply

Black rice? I’ve never heard of that, please post when you use that, I’m so curious!

Dried fruit…not really a fan and haven’t found one that I just love.

I love bowls…or more accelerate, food that comes in said bowls: ice cream, cereal, soup, ice cream, salad, ice cream… :)

Reply

I totally will!! Billy is the one that read about it so I can’t wait to post about what he comes up with!!

Reply

So true about the nutrition/gas in car analogy.
I have a huge thing for orange flavored cranberries. It sounds weird and they are hard to find, but if you see them they are a must buy!

Reply

What a cool store! I wonder if we have anything like that here in norcal…
I love brown rice and broccoli! And I am totally a bowl and mug kinda girl.
Haha… Dating was all about keeping those monsters in the closet and marriage… Well, we share a closet now… :)

nice! i love loading up in the bulk isles. if you don’t like all of the bags, use old glass containers (like from spaghetti sauce or peanut butter) they hold everything really well

last night I cooked BBQ chicken with quinoa, onions, broccoli, tomatoes and cabbage. i ate it in a tupperware container

im with you, im always using bowls or tupperware. i feel like plates dont let you scoop up every last bite as easily

I HATE PLATES! Bowls 4 LYFEEEEEEEE.

Nutrition is an area where I have struggled as of late. I know a lot of what I should do but implementing takes a lot of work. My goals are super simple – cooking dinner for my family most nights instead of takeout.
I made spaghetti and meatballs tonight.
I get most of my new nutrition ideas off of your blog along with Muncher Cruncher. Other sites tend to overwhelm me with information so I give up before I start.
