I don’t know why I choose to post such ridiculous pictures of myself.  Don’t be too jealous of my hair.

DSC 3970

Under my ipod thingee in the picture is a body bugg.  What is a body bugg?  Basically, it tells you how many calories your burn throughout the day.

I got the body bugg for my first marathon training.  I really wanted to know how many calories I was burning in order to eat the right amount of food because I had no idea how much food it took to adequately fuel training for a marathon.

It was CRAZY!!! Between long runs, tempo runs and hill workouts I was burning calories like crazy and I am thankful I had the body bugg because I knew WHY I was such a ravenous beast…..my body had turned into a calorie furnace and needed the extra ice cream a few times a day.

I don’t even know why I am writing about this but I just wanted to know how other people figure out how many calories they are burning during hardcore training in order to fuel properly?

I used the body bugg for my first marathon and then sold it after on ebay because I had a pretty good idea of how many calories I was burning and I became a little obsessive about it.  My MIL also used it for a few months in order to figure out how many calories she burned on average with all that she does!

Mouth Update:  My mouth feels like I got a mouth transplant and can’t believe how much better I feel.  Seriously, it is crazy how easily I take for granted things like not having a pounding headache for a week straight and then as soon as I hurt, I am really good at complaining about it for 97% of the hours that I am awake.

It did hurt at one point REALLY BAD!!!

A student brought in this angel to show me because she knows I am obsessed with dogs…….

Photo 2

I opened my mouth so big and for some reason that hurts my jaw really bad.  The pain was worth it because I was able to hold little Boston (the puppies name) for an hour and have him fall asleep in my arms.  It was a good day.

On another teaching note, during study hall a student was eating a banana and nutella……in the future if this happnes again should I tell her she can have extra credit if she gives it to me?  Or should I just steal it and tell her no food in class and secretly eat it at my desk…..I don’t know what to do!

What is your absolute favorite puppy breed?

-Labs, little Boston and golden retriever puppies!

How do you make sure that you are fueling properly during training?  Do you go according to feel, a plan, a website, do you guestimate your calorie burn, you don’t even think about it or something else?

-Now I just go by feel and I love that!!!

Anyone ever had a body bugg or something similar?  Did you like it?

I want that puppy!!! I love labs, goldens and border collies, but I might need to find myself a little Boston dog too.

Reply

Puppy Breed: Labs! I have a black lab named Petey. He is the best! He is six but still acts like a puppy. He also absolutely adores our three year old daughter. He is our first baby!

Your second question has me way too stressed out. I don’t know. I started seriously training a few weeks ago for my third half-marathon and I am finding that I am just so hungry during the day. I think that is what brought me to your website. I guess I just go by feel right now and just try to keep really healthy food around.

Reply

I think that is the way to do it girl. It is completely normal to be HUNGRY during the day when training because you are burning calories like CRAZY!!! Keep up the amazing work I go by feel now too!

Hi beautiful lady <3

My current favorite puppy breeds are boxers & rotties :) I would love to get a boxer but they are crazy hyper and need 16 hours of exercise per day to be calm… which would be okay in the summer but due to the insanely cold winters here in Canada… I would be a bad owner and not walk him/her for 3 months out of the year! So hopefully maybe in a year or so me and Tyler get a rottie? Or a lab.

Im not currently running but I think I might re-join a gym in October!

Have a fantastic weekend!!

OMG THAT PUPPY!!! My husband and I really want a Boston Terrier.

I totally need to sit down and iron out my training needs. Because I am trying to lose weight while training for my half, I’m trying to keep my calorie intake about the same, but I am changing when I eat. I am keeping in mind the importance of refueling after training, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be an extra meal, I can just time it so it’s my regular breakfast (or whatever).

I’ve always liked the idea of a body bug, my friend got one and she liked it. I feel like it would make me too obsessive about everything I eat and every step I take. I am already obsessive enough as it is…

Reply

Ha, that is another reason I sold it…..I became a little too obsessed over it. Girl, you look AMAZING and your training is going awesome! Keep up the good refueling and have an amazing weekend!

Awe you’re the best!

Thanks and you tooooo!!!

ANY puppy is cute!
I put my food and workouts into a calorie tracker. Used to be Weight Watchers, then Daily Plate and now using myfitnesspal.com. But generally, during training, I let myself eat when I am hungry. Moderately healthy stuff, not junk. And I never deny myself fruit.
Never had a body bugg. Never thought the cost was worth it. So I am curious to hear what people say.

first, steel the puppy. hehe kidding that would break a kids heart. but all the more reason to make a slideshow for billy on why u need a puppy/dog.

I think that you should probably give extra credit because then everyone will be happy because u will have delicious nutella and banana in your stomach while looking like a super nice teacher who gives extra credit. and maybe word will spread and more students will bring u more delicious snacks. just sayin.

oh, and have a fantastic weekend!!

Dear lord that puppy is adorable!!! I would have stolen him from the student… oops did I just write that? :)
I think having a Body Bugg can be really helpful and necessary… however for me, I know I would get addicted to it. I would constantly be looking at how many calories I am burning and how much I could eat/could not, etc. Not for me, but that’s because of my crazy history with eating :(

Reply

I had a banana and Nutella crepe on holidays, it was amazing!
I used some online site – myfitnesspal.com to track my workouts and eating to figure it out for a few months and now I pretty much know what it takes to refuel properly! I think it is really important for people to use some form to track what they burn and eat for a bit so make sure they are eating enough!

Reply

I want that puppy! OMG, he’s so cute! My sister has two of those and I want to carry them around like babies all the time. Lucky!

I have a Body Bugg but haven’t used it in several months. I need to start again because I have no idea if I’m eating enough for marathon training. My hunger-meter seems to be a little broken and by the time I eat, I’m to the point of stomach cramping. Not good!

Reply

Janae..you clearly need to pull the fire bell and be the responsible teacher and stay til the end making sure everyone is escorted out safely. You need to yell for everyone to drop what they are doing. When they leave, you grab that tasty treat and scoff it down!!

Reply

OMG how did you not steal that puppy???? I have been tellin’ hubs: “Next summer it is either a pup or a baby, so get ready!”

You should tell ALL the students that they are allowed bananutella (new word I just made up) for extra credit because then they will ALL bring you some!

I have learned to listen to my body (which is new in the last few years). I use to say that I could PHYSICALLY not get hungry and my stomach was UNABLE to growl. Whoa. Stupid teen with disordered eating, much? Anyway – long story short, I know my body now and I can read what it needs. If I’m hungry, I eat. If I’m not, I don’t. I drink water all day long. And I feed into my cravings… I crave veggies all the time, hardly ever meat, carbs I try to limit but know when to indulge. And chocolate 96% of the day. But for reals – I just listen to my body instead of relying on a device to tell me what I need. My braid is my body bugg :)

HAPPY WEEKEND!

CUTE puppy!

I usually go by feel….an listening to my body. It works! Maybe one day I’ll invest in a BodyBugg, just to see how close I am?? It could be a fun challenge! hah.

I am SO happy it’s the weekend!!!

Reply

Steal it! No food in class then – Eat it… lol :-)

never used a body bugg but I think I could become a little crazy with something like that

When I was training for my half-marathon I just assumed the calories I was burning on my GPS watch were the amount of calories I was burning, and it was INSANE. On the actual days I ran I wasn’t hungry but on rest days? Holy SMOKES.

Reply

I have a BodyBugg that I got for a really good price when I worked at 24 Hour Fitness. I really liked it! I was just curious how many calories I burned throughout an average day. Puts everything in perspective, that’s for sure. I plan on selling it now because I no longer need/use it, but it was really helpful!

Reply

Holy cute puppy!! I love all puppies- it doesn’t matter what it is, I just wanna snuggle it and smell it’s puppy smell! For the record- I would totally tell the student next time that there isn’t any food allowed and at the very least steal the nutella :)

My boyfriend and I have a boston terrier and she is the cutest thing in the world. I’m in love with her <3
I had never heard of the body bugg until this post. I've just been eating when I'm hungry haha

OMG THAT IS THE CUTEST PUPPY EVER! i have a little obsession with dogs … my family has three..a sheltie, a standard poodle, and a golden…oh and two cats. yes we are crazzaaayyyy! but my fav little puppies are def shelties, goldens, and labs! they somehow know just what look to give me and my heart MELTS! you and billy need to get a puppy ASAP because 1) you guys would be the best “practice” parents everrr! and 2) um who doesn’t want a puppy to play with foreverrrr!
i used to have a polar that told me the calories i burned after every workout but that got to be like an obsession in a bad way so i threw that guy out and stopped looking at those “numbers” ever since!<33

Okay, I love that picture. It’s fun.

My favorite breed of puppies are Golden Retriever but I love, love, love all puppy breeds.

Reply

Puppppy! Aww soo cute! I have a golden lab and she was sooooo cute as a puppy, and still very cute now :)

Reply

I love all puppies!! Boston is so damn cute!!! I used to count calories like it was my job and it’s still hard to get out of the habit but now I try to go by how I feel. I listen to my body and when it says it’s hungry, I EAT!

Reply

Love this post! So timely! I’ve totally been thinking about it. I’m curious about trying a Bodybugg for a bit because I have no cluuuuue and a tendency to drastically over/undereat. Not on purpose, but I just don’t know!!

CUTE PUPPY! I want a Vizsla. Also, I love that picture of you and your husband. Cozy + Romantic! It’s gorgeous! :)

AHHH that puppy is too freaking adorable!! You should have kidnapped him and told the student you will give her an A for the rest of the year if she pretends it nevveerrrr happened….you gotta learn to use your power as a teacher :P

Love the puppy!
I’ve had my calorie expenditure calculated during a VO2 max test. I love knowing how many calories I burn per mile (and any other data about my body b/c I’m a nerd about that stuff). But I’ve never had a body bugg, and could see how it could make me obsessive.

Reply

I wonder if that student secretly reads your blog and is hoping for some extra sneak points!

I’m going to start training for a half-marathon (either sunday or monday) and am at the point where I’m trying to figure out how much I should eat in order to stay fueled and healthy. But typically I can tell if I’m not eating properly/enough because I get moody, sad and reaaaally tired. Also, my tummy feels off.

I’m worried that a tool like the Body Bugg would become a major addiction for me! When I use my HR monitor running, it’s the equivalent to crack–I can’t stop checking it!!

That puppy is ADORABLE! Now that Tals is a mature 5 years old, I want another puppy or 17. Unfortunately, Tally is also selfish and doesn’t share very well!

That dog is SOOO cute! Neither the hubby or I have ever had a dog, but now I want one!!

For awhile I tracked all my food and exercise on myfitnesspal.com, which was really helpful to get my eating back on track because I was in a big rut. I lost 10 pounds which was great, but found I got too obsessed with it all and actually exercised way LESS, and was just too focused on the amount of calories, not the kinds of food. I was moody allll the time and was always so mad when I couldn’t eat something I wanted to, even if I’d burned a ton from a long run. It got ridiculous, and wasn’t about being healthy anymore for me. I didn’t feel like I was eating enough of the right things to be able to run and workout and just be happy! :) So I stopped tracking and actually started exercising way more, and am trying to just eat better foods. I do want to lose a few pounds in a healthy way now that I’m more back on track, so I’ll probably look into something like it again. Just totally learn from my past experience with it and do it in a better way!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend Janae!

I think you’re smart to listen to your body for fueling! I know I was so hungry when training for half marathons in the past, and I just ate when I was hungry and tried to make healthy choices for the most part. I miss training! I’m thinking about running my 3rd half this December… :)

Reply

In love with that dog! Beagles have a special place in my heart since I used to have one, but I also really want a vizsla! Ps body high looks like a sweet toy!

Reply

I used to be a crazy calorie counter, but now I don’t have A CLUE how much I eat in calories. It’s probably way too much but OH WELL. I think the Body Bugg would make me pretty obsessive too. Probably not a good for someone like me.

That puppy is sooooo adorable!!

Reply

I am training for my first marathon…trying to go by feel, but find myself starving all of the time (even on my rest days). There just isn’t enough ice cream to fuel me : )

Reply

I can not count calories. I mean, I’m capable of counting but it drives me freaking crazy…and then I start to obsess! I go on how I feel – I’m all about eating when I want because I want!

I’m impressed by the girl eating a banana and nutella…I haven’t been in a HS for a while but that isn’t what I would expect an HS’er to be eating in study hall! Good for her {and her parents!}!

Glad your mouth is some what healing. I will never forget the pain I had when I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed last year, I would bnever wish that tooth pain on ANYONE!

My dogs were pretty cute when they were pups. They are doxie westie mixes and too cute for words. One of them never grew out of his puppy stage and they are almost five. They only weigh about 15 lbs a piece and I still call them pups. Love em!

Reply

Well, I’ve never used a body bugg, but I did track calories at one point. These days, I’m much happier to just go by how I feel. I figure, my body will tell me what it needs.

I love your happy race picture!

Reply

I use nutritiondata.self.com or mypyramidtracker.com when I have nutrition projects to calculate someone’s calories/nutrient intakes. The nutritiondata one is great because it gives you ALL the nutrition info you would want and lots of cool info about a food. I don’t use it to track my calories because I was restrictive when I used to do that, but if you wanna see cool data about foods, check it out.

Reply

Keeping track of calories is way too much work! Once at a health check up the nurse told me I should be eating 1800 calories a day… umm you need to go back to school. Pretty sure I eat around 2400 and do not gain weight.

I sometimes use the website caloriecount.com, but usually I just do it to see what “grade” my nutrition gets for the day. I pretty much do the whole intuitive eating thing, but try to eat the food pyramid as well since my intuition often tells me to eat oreos.

Reply

I too can see myself becoming obsessive with something like a body bug, I am glad I have never had the urge to buy it although I would be curious to know how many calories a day I am burning…do you really think that it is 100% accurate?
I just usually gauge on how my body is feeling, if I am hungry then I eat, although I have a hard time eating large amounts of food so I eat more snacks throughout the day.

Reply

I don’t have a dog but my brother has two Boston Terriers and they are the cutest things EVER!

Regarding fueling: due to history of an eating disorder, I am HORRIBLE at listening to my body so have to depend on food logging/tracking to ensure I actually eat enough. I look forward to the day when I can mentally overcome the “I am overeating feeling” without tracking every morsel.

Reply

That’s exactly what I had to do for about a year before I grew comfortable enough to stop logging everything. Sometimes it is annoying to add up everything in my head but since for me, it’s eating ENOUGH, I don’t know if it’s a better/worse thing than someone who’s doing it to not eat?

Reply

omg that puppy is adorable! I’m kind of partial to weimaraner puppies since I have one myself and she was the cutest thing in the entire world at 8 weeks old :)

Reply

Ahhh. I want that puppy! It’s not like I have seven dogs already though..
(:

Just out of curiosity, how many calories were you burning?

Reply

Not a huge dog lover but that one is awfully cute.
I use training as an excse to eat like a pig. I seriously out-eat my husband. It’s kind of sad. When I use my Garmin with my heartrate monitor it calculates my calorie burn for me. I don’t know if I trust the accuracy though.

Reply

I don’t do well with restricting or counting calories. Like MOST healthy/food bloggers, I used to have disordered eating, so I have to be really, really careful now. just curious, how much are the Buggs?

Reply

Aww that pup is adorable! I thought about getting a body bugg, but I think I would start to obsess about the calories too so I don’t even want to know lol

Reply

omg, cute dog! i love labs and yorkiepoos. I have a huge internal debate about a big dog or little dog. Big=he can run with me. Little=smaller pee messes and can cuddle without attacking me

When I trained for my first half I used the Lose It app to track my eats and workouts, but I got super obsessed and it wasnt good for me anymore so I made myself stop using it and now just go by hunger

Reply

So glad you posted some information about the Body Bugg. I’ve always wanted to get one but I figured my insurance wouldn’t pay for it.

My favorite puppy breed has to be Rotties. They look like little bear cubs. Heck, any of them are cute. Oh and their breath..isn’t that the greatest?

Reply

Ummm….. I just throw in an extra value meal from McDonalds every now and again. Super sized. That’s gotta cover it, right?

I love my little Papillon. I should post puppy pictures of him on my blog. People didn’t know whether he was a cat or a dog. He’s the best!!!

Reply

My high schoolers know to share their snakcks with me—especially if it involves pb!! I have an “Advice from the past” board in my room and that is one of the notes left to future students….”share your pb snacks with her”! Smarties… 
I don’t have a body bugg, but I do have my heart rate monitor on constantly. I am BAD obsessive about it.

Reply

Wait…did a student really bring in their DOG to class?? That seems crazy!

I am more of a kitten person (: not cats…just kittens. They can keep up better with the energy I have. I will get one once I am living somewhere off-campus where real pets (aka besides fish) are allowed!

I totally guess on my fueling…day by day if I feel like I have bottomed-out energy-wise then I think back on what I ate and can usually tell where my weak points are and just look forward to keeping a closer watch the next day. I would probably go nuts if I was recording every step/calorie/etc. so I just go entirely by feel (: just gotta listen to your body!

Reply

i love puppies!! i dont know if i can choose a favorite breed though there are too many cute ones! i hope he waited until class was over to bring his puppy in ! lol

Reply

So I should send you this one picture I have of one of my dogs. Freakin’ adorable. She somehow managed to get herself tangled up in my nike drawstring bag, so it looks like she’s actually carrying it as a backpack.

Properly refueling is such a crazy complicated equation in my life! I’m 4 weeks away from the Chicago marathon right now and with such high miles I find eating more whole/nutrient dense foods is key. The most important thing to me is eating a BIG and balanced meal after my long runs within an hour of running. It helps keep that crazy ‘i’m gunna eat everything in sight’ feeling at bay! It’s such a challenge but always neat to learn more about how our bodies respond to high endurance running! Have a great weekend!

Reply

LOVE that you use a calorie counter to make sure you’re EATING ENOUGH as opposed to making sure you BURN OFF what you’re eating as tends to be quite common! About the chick in study hall- i think she should get told off for not following the golden rule: “sharing is caring”…*chants ‘confiscate, confiscate, confiscate* hahah!

Reply

That is one seriously cute puppy, but I’m a golden retriever girl all the way. Mine is 18 months now and I really miss that bouncy fluffball stage the way moms of human babies must miss whatever cute & cuddly stage their kids go through.

There’s a reason they use pictures of golden puppies on the packaging for pretty much every product PetSmart sells … while pretty much all puppies are cute, goldens are the cutest of the cute. :)

Reply

I would love to have a body bugg. I don’t think I have a relistic idea of how many calories I burn. It would make it feel more like a bank account with your calories and what you need to put back in order to spend them approapriatly.

Reply

omg I want that puppy so bad! Bungee needs a brother!

That body bugg sounds kind of cool, but I think I’d just end up obsessing, so I’ll just keep eating when I’m hungry and hoping for the best :).

Haha did your student bring a puppy into school?! It’s adorable! I am begging for my own puppy but not having much luck…

I wore a BodyBugg during my fitness competition training to make sure I was eating correctly too .It ended up becoming a bit of an obsession so I got rid of it, but it was VERY eye opening how much I tend to buoday.rn in a day with all my everyday activity. I can still use that info as a ball park t

Just a question, Janae – and you totally don’t have to answer if you don’t want to – but did you notice a difference in your calorie burn doing something like a tempo run or intervals vs a normal mileage run? I’ve started back into marathon training and find that I’m always RAVENOUS the days after a tempo run (I managed 4 miles at 6:45min/miles the other day!) but when I run the same distance as a recovery run, I’m totally fine. Thoughts?
Oh, and you/your blog are amazing, btw. Total running inspiration!

Um, I would have stolen Boston and taken him home with me! He is so.stinking.cute!! I love labs, corgies, mixes and English bulldogs!

Bananas and Nutella? Awesome. I am also starving ALL THE TIME… I can only eat about 1400 calories a day, which I know should be more… but if I do.. my body turns into I don’t know even what to call it. I think it’s harder to eat more sometimes then training! and i LOVE eating. It’s one of my biggest battles right now.

Reply

I got a Bodybugg a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been carting around extra weight since I had my oldest son 13 years ago. I’ve tried a few diets over the years – low carb, weight watchers etc but never lasted long on them because I was starving or I didn’t want to eat that way forever. I’m loving the Bodybugg. I’ve lost 8 pounds so far and I’m not hungry. I’m also not excluding any foods. I don’t have the mindset that I am on a diet. I eat what I want. Since I am counting my calories, I’m forced to pay more attention to my portion sizes especially on things I tended to be sloppy about like salad dressing, coffee creamer, etc. I’m training for the 3Day for the Cure and on days I do long training walks I usually eat more. The BodyBugg has reduced it to simple math for me. If I burned a lot I eat a little more, if I had a day that I wasn’t able to get a lot of physical activity I eat a little less. I can see that it could lead to obsessive behavior for some people but so far for me it has been a great tool. Right now my plan is to wear it regularly until I reach my goal and then break it back out if I start to experience scale creep…

Reply

You should ask for the puppy for an A on a test! SO CUTE!!! This body bugg thing sounds fantastic. I’m always curious if I’m eating enough, or too much if I have a jar of nutella around me!
