Nike Free Review! Gear Update.

These are pretty much the CUTEST pair of work out shoes I have ever had.

Purple and black!!!! They make my ginormous feets look a little bit smaller!

IMG 5802

I have had them for a few months now and decided to let you know what I thought.

I’m not a fan of running in them but I do love them for everything else under the sun.

I don’t think that my body is made to run in minimus shoes for long distances.  Personally, I need a little bit more support when running.

I think that the Free’s are GREAT for short distance speed work but anything more than 4 miles is a little too much for me;)

I have worn them on the ellipctical, to spin and I ALWAYS wear them to PUMP because I LOVE the flexibility that they offer during cross-training when I am not doing high impact things (aka running).    They are crazy lightweight and I love how airy (is that a word) they are, plus when I wear them around town people think I am super hardcore and athletic looking;)

——————————————————————–

Do you like reading about gear reviews?  Should I keep doing reviews about different running things that I use?

Have you tried the Nike Frees?  What color would you get them in?

What was YOUR WORKOUT TODAY?

-One hour spin class followed by a mile on the good ol’ treadmill:)

Hi Janae! I just brought some KT tape today to help with my knee injury. You should try some for shin splints, maybe it will help.
I don’t think minimalist shoes are very good for me either, once I’m recovered I will try to run barefoot in the grass more!! I don’t want to pay the money to get the five fingers right now!!

Reply

THANK YOU….I am going to have to look into the KT tape…thank you SO much Caitlin!

Reply

Ahhh…Janae, are you still having shin pain? It should have gone away by now since you have had adequate time for it to resolve itself. If you STILL have that shin pain while running i would say it’s more a stress fracture….

Reply

NO SHIN PAIN AT ALL except for when I go UPHILL so that is why we are still thinking it is shin splints…does that make sense?

Reply

YES to more gear reviews!!! love hearing your thoughts. I am obsessed with those shoes and would probably have to copy with similar colors…or maybe even pink instead of the purple :)

Reply

Those free Runs actually gave me huge calf prbs that led to my sfx.. They were still too much shoe for me

Reply

I have been DYYYYING to get a pair of those suckas!!!!

Reply

Do it Katelyn!!!! I got some Nike Free 2s last week and I literally wear them 90% of the day!!!! I got purple and black and I know all the gym peeps are jealous ;)

Reply

Those are adorable!! My workout : 2 mile run at 8am ( it was so hot!!) + some abs :D

Reply

I like looking tough in public too. And please give us more gear reviews! I just bought the Pearl iZumi cycling shoes you have, plus I think I’m just going to buy all your gear since you are super awesome.

Reply

I love gear reviews!

I haven’t tried them but there is a hot pink and yellow pair I have been eyeing up ;)

I did a home weights workout this morning before work, keeping it easy today!

Reply

Cute shoes, but like you, I need more support for my flat feet! All the cute shoes are never as supportive! :-\ But I think I could spin and pump in them!!

I took a long walk and will be doing 2-3 easy miles and some yoga later today!

Reply

I really want some of the Nike Free’s- they are so comfy! I don’t know how I would choose a color, though! Either the blue with pink, the pink with blue or maybe the white/gray/peach. I need less options!!
I have been wearing the Saucony Kinvara’s (for a marathon and a couple halves) and now I have a stress fracture. It appears I need a little more shoe for longer runs, too.
I LOVE gear reviews- keep ’em coming!

Reply

Cute, cute, cute! 1 hour spin and 30 minute free weights. I need to get my arms toned again…

Reply

I love the Frees except that a podiatrist told me like 200 years ago that Nikes are bad for your feet :-( Maybe one day I’ll get over my bias and buy a pair of those babies.

And of course, my workout today was SPIN! Yeahhh buddy

Reply

I ran 5 miles, half speed and half tempo. One plan called for 2 mile repeats and the other plan called for a 5 miles with 3 at tempo. So I did 1 mile of speed, rested the 800 and than a mile and a half of tempo. The paces were almost the same so it wasn’t a huge jump.

Reply

I haven’t tried the frees. I’m not really a fan of Nike shoes, so I stick to Brooks. Plus, minimalist running scares me a little. Yep, wife of a barefoot runner is scared of barefoot running.

My workout will hopefully be a fast run after work!

Reply

I love gear reviews, keep em coming!

I agree with the more supportive shoes. For longer distances (which for me is more than a mile lol), I just need the extra support :)

Reply

I love Frees! I have two pairs. One is black with hot pink laces and the other pair is all hot pink with yellow laces :D

I also don’t like wearing them for very long runs. I find that my feet and knees end up hurting A LOT the next day. They are great for crosstraining at weightlifting though! So light and comfy!

Keep doing the reviews! I like reading them!

Reply

Oo they do look pretty! I vote yes to gear reviews for sure. :)

Reply

I just got a pair of these a few weeks ago! Mine are black with hot pink and I LOVE them! I have worn them to do everything but run, since I’ve had some knee issues and don’t want to take any chances. I definitely feel cuter in these than my Asics and they are sooo light and flexible!

Reply

Keep doing reviews! I love them! I haven’t ever tired the free’s, but they’re so sweet looking I totally covet them.

My workout today was a 12 mile bike ride with two kids in the bike trailer, harder than it sounds!

Reply

Love, Love, Love my Free’s. I have worn them for a year now, in a marathon, three half marathons, a couple of 15k’s, all my runs, long or short. I even wore them during 30 miles of trail runs this summer. I think they have actually made my feet stronger.

And people always comment on them when I wear them in public :)

Reply

Totally agree w/review! I won a pair of Nike Frees in a running challenge last year and love them for cross-training. They are light, flexible and really comfortable.

I can’t run more than a 10k in them…even that is pushing it!

Reply

oh MAN. I got these shoes a few weeks ago…and as a fellow big-footer…YES. It’s kind of weird when I wear them, because I keep thinking my feet are MISSING. They aren’t as giant and obvious at all!

I could never imagine running in them, but love doing my exercise DVDs in them.

Reply

I love the Frees too, but I don’t run too much in them. They are seriously PERFECT for everything else at the gym though!

Reply

I love gear reviews, because i never know what to buy, or how something really feels and fits…keep em coming! I just got some Saucony Kinvaras and love the light-weight feel, but agree – long distances are not going to happen in them – I got myself plantar fascitis running a half marathon in Aasics Sppedstars #lessonlearned!

Reply

Purple & black – cute colors…I feel like the sun would melt my feet though in those colors! :-) Had a rocking workout…ran 3 miles then did some yoga! xoxo from Trinidad

Reply

I cannot you do the Martha Washington. My sister and I always do that and no one knows what we are talking about. Meant to be BFF’s!

Reply

Yes, keep the reviews coming!

I have a pair of Frees and I don’t like running in them too far either. I do however love walking the dog in them! They are super light and bendy which is great for low-impact activities. Mine are black and hot pink, only because they were 50% off! I like gray.

I got in 3 miles and some core work at 5am. Getting up that early is a much bigger accomplishment than the run itself!

Reply

I LOVEEEEE the Nike Frees. i want a pair desperately! I want to custom color them though =)

Reply

Love the gear reviews. I’m going to do one of my own in the near future. :)

Reply

Love these, especially because they are RAVENS colors and it’s almost football season!!

And I’m like you, I can wear the minimus shoes for short distance when I am trying for speed but I need more support for my long runs!

Reply

I love gear reviews! Keep’em coming.

I ran 7.26 miles this morning.

Reply

Definitely keep doing gear reviews! I always read reviews/comments before I buy something. Having a blogger I trust tell me what they love is like icing on the cake!

Reply

I love the reviews!

I just got new Nike Free+ 2 shoes last week! They are black and purple as well, and I am completely in love with them. The furthest I’ve put on them is about 6 miles and my feet were feeling pretty good. Hopefully they last for even longer runs, because I’m hoping to *maybe* start training for my first half marathon!

Reply

I overpronate a little too much to go to Frees for running (alternate between Nike Triax and Mizuno Wave Inspire) but have been seriously contemplating getting a pair for cross training / strength training / recovery run days. I’m trying to use the logic that they’ll help build up my ankle/leg strength while I do other activities but that I won’t risk getting hurt by trying to use them for long runs… We’ll see. I think its almost time to get a new pair of running shoes into the rotation, not sure I can afford to spring for Frees and a dedicated running shoe.. My birthday is next month though, maybe I’ll start dropping hints to the bf. :)

Also, love the gear reviews (and your blog in general). You should do them more often.

Reply

I have been wanting to try the frees for a while but i think like you, I need more support! Tonight is day one of my training for my half marathon so I hope to do 5 miles with 3 at HM pace!

Reply

I just got a pair of Frees! I got the hot pink ones with the white bottom and swoosh! They came laced with neon orange laces but also included neon pink laces which I promptly switched out for. I am just getting back into running and was making a switch to barefoot running so I am learning to be a runner in these shoes. I want Vibrams but they are not happening anytime soon!! I did yoga (power vinyasa) and sweated my A** off. It was not a hot yoga class but the studio felt sweltering hot!! I dripped sweat off me in buckets. Felt bad for people stuck next to me in subway car.

Reply

I LOVE your reviews! I ran in Vibrams until I got injured and now prefer the support that my Brooks gives me.

Reply

YES! Please do one about compression shorts (if you wear them)…and favorite socks…I need to purchase both before long 18 and 20 mile runs…to prep what I am wearing for marathon.

Reply

I wear nike free 7.0 (dark blue suede and mesh with pink details) to work and if I want a lightweight shoe to wear around town. They are comfy and flexible when I am walking around all evening at work. I like my shoes in darker colors- black, dark blue, grey. I think the frees have the best arch support out of all the other nikes. They are not supportive enough for me to run in but sure are comfy to walk around in.

Reply

I love the reviews! Definitely keep doing them. Whenever you talk about something I may buy, it’s totally helpful!

Reply

I love reading reviews. I love hearing real opinions and not ones from companies or stores that are supposed to endorse a certain brand.
Love the shoes, they do look hardcore :)
My workout was a 6 mile run and an upper body workout

Reply

yes, keep the reviews coming! I love hearing what you have to say and learning about different running gear too. Those are so cute, I only wish more supportive shoes were that cute. I personally need a more supportive shoe for runs to prevent injury but they just aren’t as fabulous in the looks department -urgh, why is that !

Reply

I have a lot of respect for the Nike Free because of all the research and time that went into engineering that shoe!!

Reply

They are pretty tuff-looking! :)

Reply

Ahhh!! I’m so glad you posted this b/c just posted a pic of my brand new pair of Nike Free shoes. I’ve been admiring them from the other side of the room because they are so pretty (white and pink with neon yellow laces) and b/c I’m a little scared (don’t know how much I really want to use them for).

Reply

My husband swears by his Nike Free Runs! He also realized they weren’t good for long distance running, but he can’t live w/out them for other cardio. And they’re adorable on you!

Reply

My workout was a 6 mile run and some Jillian Michaels yoga. :D
I like gear reviews because I can see how other athletes (I wouldn’t call myself an athlete, but you get the point) like what gear and how well it works for them. I wouldn’t want to waste my money on something thats not going to get me through my workouts, so I like to read tons of reviews before buying anything. If I’m gunna drop money on something, it better be good (I’m so cheap!) lol

Reply

I want some dark colored Nikes for my big feet too!

Reply

Aw soooo glad you like them! I have them in 2 colors! :)

Reply

Yes, do more reviews! :D They are very interesting. I haven’t tried the Nike Frees (always wanted to), but I do use New Balance Minimus shoes. I once ran 18 miles in them and I felt fine afterward. In fact, I LOVE them as well as Saucony Kinvaras. My workout today was a 3.73 mile run and a 30 mile bike ride on our local bike trail! :)

Reply

I love mine too! Grey with teal for me. Though the longest I have run in my is 9 miles. But, like you said, they are perfect for everything just not double digit runs for me!

Reply

I love the gear reviews. But they make me want to buy stuff… fortunately I already have some Nike Frees. BUT I love the color of yours so much more than mine! Mine are a light blue, and the first time I wore them out of the house they got brown spots on them. I have yet to attempt running in them because I’m used to stability shoes and I’m afraid to try them for running, but I wore them walking around an amusement park for several hours and they were SO comfortable! I honestly don’t care for them on the elliptical, though.

Hey girl!! I Love NIKES!! It’s all I wear!!! The best shoes ever and always super cute :) My workout today was an early morning-before the sun came up- 40 minutes FAST -run:) And yes, your reviews are great…now I just need the money to buy fun running gear ;)

Reply

I have nike frees. I never was into running in them though, I don’t know why they just don’t seem that comfy for running!
I started running in VFFs and felt fine, quite enjoyed it, was up to 5 miles. Though I still wore actual shoes for most runs. I sustained an injury (sfx in foot) while wearing my regular shoes, but I figure all the VFF running probably was the culprit since I’ve never had any such issues before.
So its back to shoes for me!
I’ve found I like the Mizuno Elixir – still a light shoe (7-8oz) but has some stability and support. I like em!

Reply

My husband has been wearing Frees since 2006 and loves them. I wear mine occasionally but since I usually always run long, I alternate between more supportive shoes like Mizuno Wave Riders and Saucony Ride. I think Frees are actually best for recovering from a run.

I ran 9 slow miles this a.m. in the heat.

Reply

Great review, keep them coming! :)
It’s bit difficult with the Nike Frees since there are many different kinds with different sole thickness. I have the Nike Free Run+ 2 with 5.0 sole (where 3.0 is thinner than 5.0) and I am OK for even 10 miles and maybe more – I was kind a surprised but we are also working on no heel stroke with The Coach, so that might be that …
Back to Frees, they are HOT PINK, because I’m crazy hot pink runner :) (photo: http://ontherun.barborkas.cz/2011/06/new-crazy-hot-pink-babies.html) and I am planning to order a customized with NikeID an thinner 3.0 sole for speed work … they will definitely be hot pink.
And last but not least, I have been following you just for a while, but you feel like a sister. I don’t blog about the food that much, but love love love it and in my family we are very very much foodies! Yummy!!!

Reply

oh my gosh i was just about to order tht exact pair once my paycheck came!!!!!!! love em!
and just figured the same thing out about me and minimalist shoess!

Reply

I have talked to many runners at Runners Corner and 26.2 and they all say the same thing; great for speed training, not good for distance. I don’t think it is a good idea to distance run in any minimus shoe though. Got to take care of those feet and legs! They are the cutest shoes ever though and I want some so bad for the gym!

Reply

Your feet are “ginormous”!?!?!? I just bought a new pair of Brooks last night. Size 12….MENS. Yes, I am a chick. My feet are long and NARROW. Men’s sizes are all I can get! It’s horrifyingly embarrassing BUT I’ve never had a black toe nail or toe issue ever in two marathons and several other races. Whatever works, I guess!

(Warning! Don’t read this next part if you are easilly offended!)

As we were getting in the car to leave the shoe store, my husband said …”Honey….judging by the size of your feet, if you were a guy, you’d have a huge ____ {insert man parts here). Just sayin’!” I nearly died laughing and of embarrassment. Who says that?!? So….I’m braggin’ about my big feet to everyone who will hear ‘cuz apparently it’s brag worthly in a mans world. ;0)
