Smoothies or Cookie Dough?

Breakfast was a tough choice.  I was making cookies (using my FAVE cookie recipe found HERE) for the peep’s at church and the dough is the best thing I have ever tasted but I knew that eating that for bfast probably would result in a headache and me curled up in a sugar coma on the living room floor.

On the other hand we have no AC and the house is getting HOT, so I decided that a smoothie would be my best bet.

I put Elite protein powder (found on my gear page under post-run), frozen bananas and blackberries, milk, chia seeds and some chocolate chips as a garnish into my smoothie.

Don’t pretend that you don’t rock the side ponytail eery now and then and that you don’t also fall asleep in the same shirt you wore the day before and work it all morning long.   Added bonus: Is it even possible to bake without spilling things all over yourself?

I am almost embarrassed to tell you what was in my sandwich for lunch. I love random combinations with a lot of different textures and tastes.  Jam, cheese, an egg and apple slices grilled on our panini maker.  Today’s broccoli was steamed.  I don’t like steamed broccoli as much as roasted but cookies were in the oven ALL afternoon and I don’t think people want there cookies with a hint of broccoli.

Today I am teaching at my church on Developing Talents!! I am excited about this one because I think you all know that my favorite thing in the whole wide world is spending time each day to develop my RUNNING abilities and also my eating talent (it takes talent to eat ice cream three times a day, believe me a lot of practice goes into that one!)

——————————————————————————–

So, today’s question for you is what TALENT (besides running) have you developed lately?  What talent do you want to work on?  Everyone has talents so no saying that you don’t have any!!!

What are your favorite smoothie ingredients?  Do you do the spinach smoothie thing?

Do you use protein powder? What do you put it in?

-I can only think of putting it into smoothies and was wondering what else people put it in?

I always put protein powder in my smoothies because I don’t eat a lot of meat. I have made protein/energy bars that include protein powder in them, but other than that, I don’t use my protein powder for much else.

Yes, I rock the spinach smoothies. I had one post-run yesterday. They are quite tasty!

Running will still be my #1 talent, but I’m really trying to work on photography!

I really want to grab some protein powder for smoothies, but I’m scared to spend so much money on something that might not taste good. What are your recommendations in protein powder??

I love banana strawberry chocolate smoothies… delicious…

Reply

Muscle milk chocolate protein powder is great! I mix it in smoothies and just with water to drink like chocolate milk- delicious!

That sandwich looks AWESOME! I was raised on jelly & cheese sandwiches – I didn’t know that was a weird combo until I got to elementary school! Whoops! I’ve been known to grab a piece of sharp cheddar & dunk it into our jam jar… :D

We had a lesson on talents today at church too. I’m working on time management, trying to figure out how to do school, marathon training, and the whole wife-mom-friend thing. I even started to blog about my journey (http://becomingrene.wordpress.com/).
I’ve mixed protien powder with my Kodiak pancake mix and made pancakes but that’s about it.
Never done a spinach smootie – I’m more of a fruity girl.

I love spinach smoothies. They always look the same no matter what I put in, but I love getting those veggies in a smoothie, especially when they don’t change the taste!
I’ve never used protein powder, I always just add peanut butter or yogurt or nuts…the price tag on protein powder always stops me

Vanilla protein powder & chocolate milk… best after workout drink EVER!!!

Lovee smoothies with spinach.. I have done a lot of strawberry, spinach and banana smoothies with vanilla protein powder. Also like berry mixes. I found a bag of frozen “very cherry” berries at Trader Joes with raspberries, cherries etc. and add that in. My boyfriend is more of a banana, and PB smoothie guy. I like vanilla protein better than chocolate bc I feel like there are more options.. but sometimes think I should try to buy more than one kind of powder. Put protein powder in cookies.. I found some on other blogs

i love your sandwich idea, don’t be ashamed.

I don’t use protein powder regularly. I have three kinds but don’t like any of them for different reasons. Still on the lookout for a good one!
Something I have been working on lately is saying ‘yes’ more to random plans and outings. I have a tendency to hermit sometimes, but life has been a lot more exciting lately.

I use whey chocolate protein powder in my smoothies with carrots, apples, bananas, sliced almonds, sometimes oats, blueberries, papaya occasionally, and I prefer Kale over spinach if its going in my smoothie, but honestly I prefer sauteed Kale so I don’t make my make my smoothies green very often!

Reply

I use protein powder every morning in my oatmeal–makes it extra chocolaty qnd filling too!
Running is a talent I want to continue to develop, but lately I have been doing more and more freelance writing (as opposed to just editing) and I want to really develop my skills in that area!

Reply

I put protein powder in protein pancakes and have put them in oatmeal before, but I prefer them in smoothies. I do use spinach in my smoothies, along with almond milk, protein powder, half a frozen banana, and frozen fruit. I also typically do frozen spinach because the more frozen stuff you put into it, the thick it is.

I really need to get a panini maker.

I’ve always wanted to play the guitar, so I bought one in April and have been teaching myself to play. I’d forgotten how rewarding and exciting it is to learn something completely new. :)

Reply

That is the coolest thing ever! Will you teach me how to play the guitar?!?

Janae – I just discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago and LOVE it!!! You are hilarious and I can relate to your eating dilemmas…. always pick ice cream! Haha

I actually am developing my running talent (that is a loose term right now). I ran my first 5k in May and hope to get faster and stronger at that distance before moving on to bigger distances. You are an inspiration to us newbies and I love hearing about your recovery.

I love all smoothies – with spinach if its there. Yum Yum!

Reply

Your comment absolutely made my day!!! Your first 5k… Girl you are a rockstar!! I am so happy you are loving running!!! Please keep me updated on your longer distances!!!!

Love my blender. Went for a nice 10 miler this morning. Returned home and added to the blender: 1 froz banana, froz blueberry, froz strawberry, 1 beet, handfuls of kale, and home-made yogurt. Then, just enough OJ to make a nice consistency … blend and gulp.

I use Kale or spinach, but then load in the blueberries to make sure it’s not green.

What do you use the Chia seeds for?

I don’t generally use a protein powder. But I do try to eat protein sources. Today I followed my blender of fruit and veggie with 1/2 an egg salad sandwich.

I would have to go with my musical talents! Smoothies I use almond milk ,chocolate protein, spinach, peanut butter!

Reply

Running, teaching spin and photography are big on the list for me. I like to be active and creative so these work well!

Reply

Since its always a million degrees on Florida I live for protein smoothie blends, especially with chia seeds & spinach. I get all the good stuff I need on a refreshing and easy “meal”.

I too like to make protein pancakes, or baked oatmeal with protein. I’ve also seen microwave protein cake recipes too. Mmmm mmmm.

I’m trying to keep fostering my running talent, but I’m also working on being a better fitness instructor. Any tips?

Reply

I’ve never made a smoothie with spinach. For some reason, it really weirds me out!Never been big on protein powder either. I know it’s so hot right now but it’s just not my thang.

Other talents?? hmmmm, I’m ridiculously good at hula hooping. I’m that girl who can walk on her knees. I haven’t really worked on the talent since the 6th grade talent show but perhaps I’ll give it a go again.

Reply

I like using protein powder in chocolate overnight oats. Mmm.

And I would have skipped the smoothie and just eaten cookie dough for breakfast.

Reply

I love to sneak a bunch of spinach in my smoothies! I sometimes use protein powder, but a lot of times I just use yogurt for protein. I’ve also used it in oatmeal.

I would eat your sandwich, it sounds good! Have you tried peanut butter and cheese sandwiches? So good!

Reply

I loove all smoothies!!!!! :D
Sometimes I use some protein powder to make microwave baked oats!!! Its really yummy!

Hi Janae! I commented the other day about getting back into working out and would love to talk to you more about it.

I use protein powder mostly in smoothies too and I use xanthan gum to make them extra thick so I can put them in a bowl and eat them with a spoon like ice cream! But you can also add it to yogurt, to cottage cheese, to your milk and cereal, in pancakes, cookies, homemade granola bars, you name it! It’s actually way more versatile than you think! I have some recipes if you’d like!

Reply

I like spinach in my smoothie, but not so much that it tastes like spinach (usually 1 handful). If you’re looking for something else to put protein in I highly recommend trying “Ballz”, I got the recipe from the Fitnessita!

i used to think adding spinach to smoothies was weird but now i do it all the time! you can’t taste it at all and it gives you lots of great vitamins and nutrients. you HAVE to make pancakes and oatmeal with protein powder – it works so well!

When I was younger, I was a competitive gymnast, so I was super flexible. 15 years later, aka last night after a couple beers, I discovered that I could still put both of my legs behind my head, to the amazement of all of my friends. An old talent brought back to life!

A talent that I discovered last year was cake decorating. I joined a class on a whim and fell in love, now I even have a cake/cupcake blog!

My husband makes the best smoothies! Frozen blueberries, banana, strawberry yogurt, coconut water, and sometimes protein powder. Yum!

Reply

I made cookies for church coffee hour too! Then I ate a bunch of them after the service :).

The talent I’ve developed lately is honing my cooking abilities. After I graduated from college I could pretty much scramble eggs and that was it. I’m progressing nicely.

I use protein powder and put it in smoothies and I’ve been contemplating putting it in oatmeal too.

Reply

Spinach, banana, frozen strawberries and peanut butter! I don’t make them very often, but that’s my favorite combo.

Reply

I LOVE smoothies! A typical one will include almond milk, a banana, hemp protein, cinnamon, and a handful of spinach! You don’t even taste the spinach. It just adds more greens to my diet and a little boost of IRON!

Besides smoothies, I usually put protein powder in my morning oatmeal. As a vegan, it’s a bit harder to get protein in so I try to sneak it when I can!

Come over and make me cookies!!!

Reply

I LOVEE smoothies. To make mine really thick (almost like ice cream since I don’t eat ice cream) I use cottage cheese, a little bit of milk, frozen banana, any other fruit I want to add and I ALWAYS add peanut butter. It’s delicious!

I guess a talent I would be (trying) to develop is writing. My mom says I’m a good writer (when I want to be), so I’m actually contemplating starting my own blog…but the thought terrifies me!

Reply

I normally put lots of fruit or lots of chocolate into my smoothies. Lately, I’ve been adding extracts (vanilla, almond, coconut, etc.) and they make them totally awesomer! I do add frozen spinach because I just love spinach… seriously I LOVE the taste.

I don’t use protein powder in my smoothies because I don’t like it. I think it tastes like chalk and I’d rather eat a scoop of greek yogurt or lots of shrimp to get my dose of protein!

And I totally love cookie dough… Sometimes I start eating it at 11 PM and then go to bed wanting to die because my stomach hurts from eating the raw eggs and mass amounts of sugar. But seriously, it is SO WORTH IT, right?

Reply

I love spinach in my smoothies! I feel like it’s a great way to get a kick of nutrients! I usually just uses protien powder in my smoothies but I also love making The Fitnessita’s amazeballs with it. They’re a great pre workout snack and taste like cookies!

This has made my day. I wish all pstoings were this good.

Your lunch sounds like a winner to me! I love random combinations and I’m always coming up with ones that get me some pretty strange looks. I’m fine with it, though, because I’m just silently thinking “you guys have no idea what you’re missing”…

HA, You are hilarious….I think the same thing.
GIRL!! My comments never show up on your blog….check your spam!!!

I love smoothies, I usually have one every night before I go to bed…protein powder +almond milk+peanut butter yumm! I use alot of protein powder, I use it in my oatmeal, to make muffins, pancakes, and cookies.
I like to secretly think I have an amazing talent to sing :)

Reply

I have never used any protein powders, but lately I am eating random spoonfuls of PB like it is goin’ out of style cuz I know I don’t get enough protein.

I have been trying to develop the talent of cooking healthy and yummy foods for me and my hubster; but never fear we always have sugary dessert afterward.

Reply

COOKIE DOUGH. Every time.

I use vega protein powder EVERY SINGLE DAY. It tastes just like cookie dough / vanilla cake!! I use it in cookie dough bowls they are mah faaaave :)

Reply

Yes, LOVE green smoothies.

And I put protein powder into a muffin recipe that I cook in the mike instead of the oven.

I love running and I love nutrition/food, but I kind of treated them as separate entities. I am developing my talent for intertwining the two. So far I am happy with my progress because my long runs and their recovery have never felt so good.

I also am working on giving myself my own favorite spa treatments. The pedicure I gave myself today doesn’t look half bad in these sandals, and my new nightly “wrinkle cream” …….well I’ll let you know in a month.

Reply

Besides running, I’m working on my design talent! I’ve been taking classes part-time for a year – if you ever need a business card or a logo design, I will eventually be able to do that!

My favorite smoothie to make has chocolate protein powder, strawberries, banana, almond milk, and a spoonful of dark chocolate peanut butter, just bc I’m obsessed with that stuff. :P

Reply

I definitely drink spinach smoothies all the time. It’s such a good way to get extra greens in! I used to use hemp protein powder but I haven’t gotten any in a while. I may need to replenish that..

Talents.. I can’t think of any currently that I have but I used to be really good at soccer and playing the saxophone. Oh wait, I can cook REALLY well. There we go, that’s my current talent :)

Reply

you know that sandwich is genuis girl! I would eat that in a heat beat. Hope church went well!

Reply

I like banana, blueberries, raspberries, spinach, flaxseed & chia seeds, and almond milk in my smoothie!

Reply

i like protein powder in overnight oats and in cooked oatmeal. It’s also great in pancakes! You can substitute it for the flour. In the past I’ve used a scoop of protein powder, 2 egg whites, a large scoop scoop (may 1/4 c.) greek yogurt and sometimes a little bit of oatmeal (~1/4 c?) It turns out really well!

Reply

I love rocking the side ponytail! It’s usually not intentional…it just moves it’s way on over during the day. Or when I sleep on it. :) I love spinach in my smoothies – can’t taste it, but it packs a nutrient punch and provides great energy. Like Popeye, ya know?

Reply

YES! Love smoothies. I add lots of spinach to ours, it’s great because you can’t taste it and my toddler doesn’t know he’s getting all those good nutrients. :)

Reply

Cookie Dough is Dangerous! That was me this morning with my peanut butter cupcake batter vs. Banana and toast! Decisions! Oh and I always do the side ponytail! No Joke!

The talent I have been working to develop lately is gardening! It is so fun and gives me almost as many endorphins as running does! Love it!

My favorite smoothie ingredients are Raspberries, Blueberries, and Pineapple with some milk, Ice and some protein! Yummy!

Reply

Okay, I’m confused because where did your rest day post go??! But now I get to see this one and I would have missed it! :) WE made your cookies tonight. :)

Reply

I love the spinach smoothies! I throw just about anything into mine, especially yogurt (more calcium), almond or peanut butter, cocoa powder, or a little bit of vanilla. YUM. You can make what tastes like a mocha milkshake if you add some instant coffee and chocolate milk or cocoa powder. Now I’m really looking forward to my post-swim smoothie, even though I’m still eating breakfast!

Reply

i love throwing spinach into smoothies! so easy to get in extra vegetables! i throw protein powder into oatmeal and smoothies, yum yum!!

I am enjoying developing my (amateur) photography skills!!! It’s new, I don’t have a fancy shmancy camera but there’s so much to learn and I’m having a blast!

I’m pretty basic on smoothies – frozen banana, soymilk, cocoa poweder or vanilla essence and honey and I’m set. But I want to try putting in spinach and maybe my chia and spirulina

I used to put chocolate protein powder in my oatmeal and then sprinkle it with cinnamon… it was heavenly, like a big bowl of cookie! mmmmm or you can make pudding out of protein powder and soy (or rice or skim) milk and that is rocking too! and if you add chocolate chips to any of the above it’s just fantastic!

Reply

Spinach smoothies a must!
A bit of Greek Yogurt, spinach, fresh cherries, honey, a bit of OJ and pineapple. Yum!!

Reply

Right now, I’m working on refining my photography and writing talents (not sure if you could truly call either of those talents, but I regress…).

You know, the sandwich ingredients sound kind of strange, but GOOD! I might have to give that panini a try today. :)

Reply

THOSE ARE BOTH AMAZING TALENTS and girl you rock at BOTH of them!! TRY THE PANINI and let me know what you think!

Reply

Janae!!! I feel like I have been MIA from your blog for tooooo long! I’ve been gone for the past couple of weeks, and I’ve been reading your blog from my phone, but it’s hard to comment.

I would say my talent that I have discovered in the last year is dancing – I never had any idea I could dance (other than cheerleading dances). I became a Zumba instructor in May of 2010, and I have truly found a passion in it. I am now starting a hip-hop cardio dance class and it is challenging me to create new routines. I love it!

Fav smoothie ingredients: peanut butter, frozen bananas, CINNAMON, protein powder (sun warrior), frozen berries, greek yogurt, etc… I have done the spinach thing and I love it! You can’t taste it at all.

I love my Sun Warrior protein powder! I have both chocolate and vanilla, but the vanilla is the bomb. I put it in smoothies, oatmeal, and cookie dough cereal bowl (thanks to Fitnessista). Amazing! :)

Reply

I HAVE MISSED YOU!!!! So glad you are back!! I am SO happy that you have discovered your love for DANCING and that you are a Zumba instructor…that is the coolest thing ever and I wish I could come to your classes. Thank you SO MUCH for the protein powder advice!!!

Reply

It is really great that you are teaching at your church :) I love putting protein powder in my yogurt. I could definitely see putting it in cookies, pancakes, waffles, and oatmeal too, though. :)

Reply

I use chocolate protein powder in plain oatmeal with peanutbutter, aka peanut butter cup oatmeal! :)

Reply

I use prot powder in oatmeal, smoothies, cookies, and quick breads (Read:banana flax seed bread)

I love putting spinach in my smoothies. I need to start making them again!! Haha.
