Early morning treadmill walking and new running gear.

I am typing this as we are passing through Vegas, I drank way too much water this morning and now I am suffering the consequences (we like to take the least amount of stops as possible on road trips) and I am getting a little antsy.

I did do something awesome and woke up an hour earlier than I was going to (5:45) to get an hour walk with an incline in on my treadmill.  I did not want to be my usual road trip self and ask Billy every five minutes to pull over so I can stretch out and do a few laps around the car so I wanted to get a little bit of walking in on my ‘rest’ day.

It felt great to just walk.  I loved it.  Mainly because I got to watch Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss edition on Hulu at the same time! If you haven’t seen that show, it is your homework to watch it today okay!?!

Yes, that was me crying while walking on my treadmill at 6 a.m. because of the amazing inspiration these people are to me.  A lot of them have been through SO MUCH and it is a much more realistic approach to weight loss than the Biggest Loser.

Sorry if this post doesn’t make sense but I am googling on my phone if anyone has ever died from  their bladder exploding at the same time I am writing this.

——————————————————————————-

We had a giftcard to Runner’s Corner and I got all this gear yesterday for 30 bucks.  Boom.

I really get an adrenaline rush from getting a good deal.

I LOVE Shot Bloks but they talked me into trying chomps and PowerBar’s new gu-like product. Gu’s make me gag but they promised me that this new PowerBar thing is more like gatorade but just a little bit thicker.  I may sue the worker if the taste or texture is anything like Gu’s.

What is your favorite FUEL during a run?

-Skittles but I guess they don’t have electrolytes or something and they aren’t the best option, so I guess I will say Shot Bloks.

What was the LONGEST road trip you have ever taken?

-When I was little we went on a month vacation all over the US by car.  It was awesome and we would stop along the way every now and then and my mom would run up and down a hill for a few minutes…..you try a month long road trip with five little ones…I don’t know what they were thinking.

Have you seen Extreme Makeover: Weight loss Edition?!?! What did you think?

My boyfriend hates to stop, and for some reason, I have to pee like every 5 minutes once we get into the car.

SERIOUSLY!!! My bladder is out of control on road trips…so annoying!

I like shot bloks- can’t stand gu or jelly beans. The longest road trip I’ve taken was from California to Minnesota as a teenager. It was really fun- we did it with lots of cousins and make tons of stops.

haha oh boy, I drink so much water too! I’ve been trying to drink less this summer though!
I looove extreme make over weight loss edition. Did you know the trainer lives in Mesa? His wife’s family is really close with my ex, so I met his wife back in March, and saw him too at Rumbi’s!

I can’t stand the texture of Gus either, so I stick with shot bloks too. its like eating gummi bears except they’re huge and square, mmmm! and I am the world’s worst passenger because I drink way too much water every time and we have to stop every town we get to.

I love Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition! I ended up boycotting the Biggest Loser recently because the message they were sending was something I just really didn’t agree with. They make them afraid to eat bananas, olive oil, high protein yogurts etc, but shove chemically laden yogurts and promote diet pills (both Jillian and Bob have them now! Ahhh!). I love that they take a whole year and push them to achieve large but attainable goals.

Sorry for the tangent…it’s just something I’m pretty passionate about. :)

I agree with you, but i’ve recently been listening to Jillian Michaels podcasts (free on itunes) and i’m really surprised at how SMART she is and how much she promotes eating REAL foods like the ones you listed above as oppose to the fake crap!

Reply

I’ve heard her podcasts and I totally agree! I wish they would incorporate more of those ideas into the show. :/

me too! :) She’s great…minus the diet pills!

Put the powergels into a flask, about 4 of them is what i use, then add some water. Those gels were originally meant to be mixed with water, so that may be why you gag on the GU, which i do think is paste like!

I have those exact same NB shorts! I like them, but the liner gives me a wedgie sometimes, that doesn’t happen with any of my other running shorts. Hope that’s not TMI.

I used to really like Shot Bloks, but at some point over the winter/spring I decided the chewing can be tiring and I prefer to suck down the gu. I still like the taste of the Shot Bloks though (strawberry). I’ve tried Gu Chomps in orange – a little tougher to chew than shot bloks in my opinion. Curious to hear what you think of the Power Bar gel!

Longest Road Trip: Rochester, NY to Clearwater, FL. Or more recently, Central NJ to Charlotte, NC to Palm Bay, FL (at least that was broken up with visiting friends in between).

Ohh, let us know how you like the chomps! I’m typically a Gu girl – I just eat it over the course of 2 mins or so, because a whole thing of it at once is yucky. I’ve tried the Powerbar gel before… it was at mile 18 of the NYC marathon though, so I don’t really remember if it was good or not. I was desperate for ANY fuel at that point. :)

Treadmill walking is actually really fun if you have TV or a book to read. I love walking on my treadmill instead of sitting and being restless.
Hope your road trip is a blastie! The longest I’ve been in a car was an 18 hour trip to Myrtle Beach with my friend’s family (and 4 of her brothers/sisters). This week, I’m actually going on a longgg trip to Nova Scotia though, which I think is 10 hr drive, 3 hr ferry, then another 3-4 hours driving. I think I’m packing my water bottle, so I’m not tempted to drink a ton of water.

Reply

that’s weird that they told you the powerbar gels are new…cause i’ve been using them for years. (sorry if you/they were saying that they were new to you) i really like them a LOT better than gu’s due to the texture. hope you like them too- i wish i could do shot blocks or the like, i just have a hard time chewing things when i run…. :)

Jelly Bellys are my favorite running fuel, oh and Chocolate Outrage GU’s which I finally started to like after many attempts! I also like Honey Stingers.

Our longest road trip was 16 hours to Seattle last summer. I thought it would be too long but we enjoyed it.

I”ve had that, “i think i’m going to die because I have to pee so bad” feeling on a road trip before. it is the WORST! I feel your pain.

Chomps are really good, don’t worry, you won’t be sorry!

Hope you’re having a fun drive!!

Hate to say it but I like GUs and carbooms! For gels. Yes liking the new extreme show!

I’ve never done long enough runs that I’ve had to fuel during htem but I’m training for a half-marathon (assuming I haven’t already injured myself, we’ll see at the doctor tomorrow) and I guess I’ll have to start thinking about it… But I just did an hour-long walk at an incline as well :) my legs are buuurning haha. Definitely a DIFFERENT sort of workout but good all the same!

And I totally have to pee every 5 minutes. Stupid hydration ;)

So, after reading your blog post, I turned on Hulu to watch Extreme Makeover: WLE. Yeah, five minutes in and I’ve already spent half that time crying. Thanks a lot… (I complain, but will totally watch the rest!)

I tend to use Clif Shots when I run as well as those Powerbar Gels you picked up. The employee was right. It is a lot more liquidy than other gels so it goes down a lot easier. Mocha and chocolate are my favourite flavours!

My longest road trip was from where I live (Toronto) to Orlando, Florida. It took us two days and I wanted to scrape my eyeballs out of my sockets. Worst experience ever. I think I lost 10 pounds on the way there from vomiting every 20 miles.

Girl. When I ran the Harrisburg marathon we had a 2 hour car ride to the race in Pennsylvania (foreign territory for us). It turns out that once you get on the turnpike, there’s no getting off – and no bathrooms either! I thought I was going to DIE and finally I made the hubby pull over for a pit stop in a bunch of weeds. He gallantly blocked me from view and luckily the road were pretty empty. That was such a miserable feeling that the marathon felt like a piece of cake afterwards!

When I was in fourth grade, my family drove from Ohio to Disney World (in FL). I’m pretty sure that’s the longest road trip I’ve been on. The drive there seemed to fly by, but I remember the car ride home being a little less fun!

I need to get better at fueling during a run..but seriously there’s gotta be a number of miles you CAN run without needing fuel..am I right?!

I LOVE the jelly sports beans as fuel. They are really yummy & I like that I don’t have to eat them all at once like with a gel. I take like 3-4 jelly beans every 2 miles instead of a gel every 6- and I alternate between ones with caffine & ones without. Maybe it’s a mental thing, but I feel like spacing out my intake like that is benificial in keeping me steady. Also, then I get to look forward to hitting that next two mile mark to get more yummy beans!

Reply

I like shot blocks and actually like the Clif GU. The chocolate tastes like chocolate glaze icing to me. I almost want to go do a long run just so I can eat it. :)

Reply

Wow – are you me? Because I love Gu – they are totally like frosting shots!

I do have a pack of blocks, in margarita flavor. Kind of afraid to try them, because they mention salt on the package, and I’m not one who eats a lot of salt, so I’m afraid they’d overwhelm. Then again, I actually get patches of dried salt on my face after long runs, so I definitely need replenishing!

Teach me to love GU!!! If you think it tastes like frosting…how could I not love it!

YES! i love extreme makeover: weight loss edition. It makes me cry every time!! plus, that trainer is a cutie ;)

He sure is:)

I use a whole slew of different fuels. Lately, just because it’s a beat cheaper and feels like a healthier option, I do one gel or 2 shot bloks, and then some dates. Today was two dates (the smaller ones, deglet noor) and one accel gel (vanilla – was more of a watery texture, not gooey at all). It was yummy, but sticky. I think I am more of a shot blok & dates girl. The sticky fingers thing bugs me on runs.

I love extreme makeover weight loss edition!! I find it very inspiring as well. And it’s so not gimmicky like BL is (even though I love BL, too…gotta admit it’s gimmicky, though!) Plus it’s a lot more realistic and sensible.

soo jealous of your treadmill.
I want some soo bad but it would take up my entire living room!! :) Maybe later!
I have never been on a long road trip but when I was younger, July was the only month my dad had off so we went on month long trips to S. America, Europe, Central America etc. We would go hiking, rent cars, hitch on to buses, bike etc…

Reply

We’ve driven to DISNEY before!!! I don’ tknow what my parent were thinking at all.

Are you on your way to Cali?!? I hope so!!! :)

Reply

um your month long road trip is the coolest thing ever. I’ve really never done multiple days in a car now that I think about it. My favorite fuel is dates and vanilla Gu’s. Frosting I tell ya, I swear you might like that flavor.

Reply

We road tripped 2.5 hrs to my brother’s house today and I had to pee for about 2.25 of those hours. I was the one who refused to stop (it drives me crazy!) though and I could barely walk myself from the car to the bathroom when we finally got there. Hope you made it!

Reply

So… if you end up liking the powerbar gels, I have some vanilla and strawberry flavors I’ll gladly send to you.

And right now I’ve been using sweet tart jelly beans… but I’ll probably need to switch to something with electrolytes. I felt so dehydrated on my run today, it was awful. I cut it 4+ miles short and it took a majority of the day, plus 1/2 a big bottle of gatorade and a 20(?) oz bottle of powerade before I was feeling better.

We did the month-long cross-country trip in a rented motorhome (2 kids, 1 dog, 2 parentals; 31 states: Maryland–>southern route to California–>northern route back home). My dad stopped at every state line and ran across…way cool!

Dude, I’m with you on the need-to-pee thing…painful!!!! I have a solution for you though- on saturday I was up in London and totally panicking on the underground because I reeeeeaaallly needed to go. And couldn’t, obviously. Stress!! I was getting a little antsy, and then my Mum told me to say the following “affirmation” (you love Friends, right?) : “You are a strong, confident woman, who does not need to pee :-P” Like Chandler not smoking in Friends. I laughed so much I nearly DID pee, lol! :-P (I didn’t though, thank gawd) And the other people on the train must’ve though we were nuts, reciting it and giggling! Use it wisely, my friend ;-) xyx

I love honey stingers-specifically the pomegranate flavor

yes you bladder can explode, but that takes a toooooooon of pee

for about 7 years my family would take a 2 week vacation and drive everywhere. once we drove to canada and new york, another time we drove to cali, another time to yellowstone. they were the best vacations ever. we saw so much along the way and had lots of fun

I don’t know how people run and eat things? I am so uncoordinated. When I ran my half, I thought someone was going to have to do the heimlich maneuver on me. Not kidding. I liked them, I just have to figure out how to chew and not choke while running.

Reply

I like a ziplock baggie of raisins. Its natural and easy to eat throughout the run. Perfect.

I noticed from your picture you have a macbook, is that what you blog from? (I have a macbook too). Do you have blogging software you use or just the blogger/now wordpress website?

I love shot bloks and dislike gu too! They make my stomach hurt!

Reply

I love GU chomps. I had a trial pack at Rock n Roll Arizona. The watermelon is my favorite. I alternate them with a caffeine pack ( apple-cranberry) every other mile in a race.
