Workout:  Taught spin (knee hurt, hmm) and then tested out running to see if it was worth it to go race this weekend….FELT AWESOME. Um, I don’t know what to think about this one.  My spinning form must be messed up or I am trying to do to much tension, IDK.  Run was short but gave me a little confidence for Saturday.  Mile 1-8:00 (testing out the water)  Mile 2-5 (6:30) felt very happy and let’s see if I can hold that pace for 13.1……what do you think?

I complain about the fact that I don’t have enough time to blow-dry my hair and pick out a shirt that I haven’t already worn three days this week.  At least I paired it up with something different, hopefully my students don’t notice.  I am supposed to be an example of hygiene.  FYI we don’t have a washer and dryer….you do the math.

Photo on 2011-02-24 at 09.06 #2.jpg

I caught myself and said….’hey Janae, remember how you spent two hours on your 1/2 marathon playlist making sure each song was just right and in the perfect order.  It is stuff like this that makes it so you don’t have enough time to shave your legs (sorry Billy) or pluck your eyebrows (sorry to the rest of the world).”

Will I change my ways.  Nope.  I love wasting ridiculous amounts of time on things that to most people sound silly but are REALLY important to me.

I will share the playlist with you.  I would only do this with my closest friends.

P.S.  I am one of those girls that listens to really angry music when she runs.  When I do other things like spin or crosstraining I like the poppy stuff but when it is just me and my sneakers hitting the pavement just call me Linkin Park’s biggest fan.

Maybe my angry music explains my angry faces.  Sorry, you have had to endure all the creepy race photos this week but I have too many of them so why not post them all over the internet?

Is it illegal to put up pictures of random people’s chest hair that Billy took a picture of during a race?  I bet I could pull this off on my legs, I could shave hungryrunnergirl onto them.

I know this is the most random post ever but I wanted to tell you about an experiment we are doing for one of my classes. We put rice into jars 2 weeks ago and wrote words on the jars. The students talk to them everyday (positive things to the positive jars and negative things to the negative ones).  Guess what……  The negative jars of rice are molding and the positive one’s still look good.  The way we talk to ourselves and those around us have a huge impact!!!  Don’t mold yourself over.

What do you eat the night before a race?

-I am old school and stick to spaghetti, grilled chicken and breadsticks of course.  NO FIBER FOR THIS GIRL.

Do you think our words impact our lives?

You weren't kidding about your running list- that stuff is HARDcore! And I say go for the leg hair thing. My poor husband suffers the same fate with my legs never being smooth.

Reply

I just voted for you-hope you win!!!

Reply

I'm like a 14 year old girl with my running music – total silly girl pop. Love it!

Pre-race – pretty much anything, although I tend to do spaghetti a lot.

Reply

I read A LOT of blogs that I could've voted for, but I totally voted for yours.

Your blog is AWESOME. I hope you win! And I'm not just saying that for the swedish fish cuz I don't even like those things (don't hurt me….)

Reply

GREAT playlist. i want it to dance to right now in my office.

and i agree with you. if i say something aloud there is an EXCELLENT chance it will happen.

Reply

Thanks for sharing your playlist! I am going to have to borrow a few songs!

Crazy cool class experiment!

Oh and I voted for you!

Crazy cool class experiment!

Oh and I voted for you!

Reply

Voted!

That class experiment is interesting- I'm a teacher too so I appreciate when you share your ideas!

Thanks for sharing your playlist too – how sad is it that I haven't heard of even ONE of those songs?!!

Reply

That is the best experiment ever – you must an AWESOME teacher!! I'm also glad your mini-run went well! :)

Reply

I already voted for you!

I have way too many running playlists on my ipod – depending on my mood, I change my running songs. I always have a mix of fast, up-beat songs that are pop, but it's the angry, hardcore songs that really motivate me and push me when I wanna go fast. Seriously, Eminem is my go-to running music, his songs rock for running!

Words are a huge impact that is why I'll tell you that you will ROCK the half marathon this weekend.

Reply

First. I love your blog. Second. I voted for you! Third. I am loving your playlist and totally stole some songs to add to my ipod as well. I have been having a music funk lately and totally needed some new tunes. SO THANK YOU! Fourth. I totally am inspired by your running. Reading your blog has helped me challenge myself as a runner. Thanks for all the support, even when you don't even know you are doing it! Good luck in your race, I will be cheering for you from Vermont!!!!!

The crazy German song is "sang" by Rammstein, if it's the same "Du Hast" that I'm thinking of.
I frequently taught in dirty clothes while I was student teaching. It happens. :)
Pizza is, has been, and will always be my night before meal.

Reply

you got my vote no need to send anything!!!
night before: plain pasta and fruits
music: some pop not too much and mostly classic rock I guess…from your list I got one: Avril that's it!!! the rest I don't know them…I know I am old.

have you ever seen a double rainbow? go check the pics I posted today! pretty cool.

Reply

I always wonder why I don't have time to shave my legs too – maybe it's because I just don't want to. Winter blows anyways.

Love the playlist! You're going to rock it!!!

Reply

I love your playlist! I have to have a solid beat when I run or I flounder.

I really don't have any pattern for what I eat before I race. I should get on that. Spaghetti sounds delish!

That experiment is amazing! Love it!

Reply

You are such a cutie pie! I thought of you on my run tonight! I love angry music when running too.. Eminem is bomb. You should add Eminem till i collapse. Its a great 20 mile song. It works magical. :)

Reply

I like to mix it up with my music….some poppy stuff and some angry rock music! =D
You'll do great on the half!

Reply

Totally nominated you-I LOVE this blog!!!

I voted too! :)

Reply

First, I have to tell you I love your blog – I always look forward to new posts! You crack me up and I totally appreciate how real you are – I can totally relate to you. I had to laugh when I saw your post today – we have very similar tastes in running music! I get all my tunes from my 18 year old brother, so I'm sure you can imagine my playlists… Do you ever run to electronic music? I'm getting ready to make a playlist too – I'm running a marathon on Sunday! Like you, I ALWAYS eat pasta (and a little broccoli – I'm a fellow broccoli lover) the night before. Good luck on Sunday!!

Reply

Alright I totally just voted for you because you are just plain AMAZING and we all love you.

Wow. You really do listen to angry music! I wasn't expecting all of that!! I get it though. When I race I listen to NO music but if I did, it wouldn't be poppy. For some reason that would mess up my focus. For XT, give me all the lady gaga in the world and I'm pleased. :)

YOU ARE GOING TO "KICK TRASH" (in your words) THIS WEEKEND!! I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ALL ABOUT IT!!!!!

Reply

My fave running songs are Push it to the Limit, Heart of a Champion, anything Katy Perry or Kesha and a good amount of Eminem but my playlists are extensive! I totally believe in karma and giving respect to get respect! And don't worry girl, I literally hang back up my clothes at the end of the day =P.

Reply

I LOVE Linkin Park when I run too! It's the best :)

Reply

YES! I love your running play list, and I love angry music too! My running list is a bit more angry and crazier than yours, but I love it. It probably weirds people out at the gym when I try to headbang and "sing" along while running. But I haven't fallen off the treadmill yet, so I shall continue! :)

PS – love your blog, just started following, and you keep me inspired. THANKS!

Reply

I ONLY listen to rock/hardcore angry music when I run too! I'm not really sure why but I love it! Breaking Benjamin is one of my favorite bands to run to but when I listen to them in the car driving I get anxiety. haha

Voting now :)

I had to comment on this one because I absolutely believe that the way we talk to ourselves is important. There was a study like the one you did on rice…done on water. Rhonda Byrne talks about it in her book, "The Power" her book written after "the secret". i think it was done by a Japanese scientist. Soooo cool since our bodies are made up of 70% water. Our cells are made to obey us!
Does that make sense? You are so on track!

Reply

I always look like I am about to die when running a race. I figure that way you know I am pushing myself as hard as I can!!

I actually don't run to music. I've tried a few times but missed the quietness of the world. (I run in the morning before anyone else is up.)

I don't have a preset dinner the night before a race, but it was always pasta in high school!

Reply

Wait I love you, we are running music twinssss:) Slash I believe that words are SO powerful! What we say to ourselves can be incredibly helpful or completely destructive.

I always fuel with CARBS! Tons of bananas, peanut butter, and lots and lots of pasta and cookies:)

Reply

Good luck on the half!! That's the pace I'm shooting for too! You'll rock it!!

yes! Great playlist. I like angry music too! So glad the knee was okay! 1 more day. YEA!

I'm so happy to hear your knee didn't hurt while you ran!

Ummm… you call that angry music? My playlist could kick your playlist's butt!!!! lol I'm all about some hard rock when I'm running: Avenged Sevenfold is my absolute favorite.

Reply

Hey! I voted for you!!!
The music I run to is kinda all over the place but I definitely love me some rap and hip hop. Kesha is one of my faves too.
I'm all about pasta before a race too :-)
And I for sure agree with you about how words impact our lives. If you say what you believe and keep saying it, then there's no reason it won't happen. You just have to be dedicated and work at your goals~

Reply

I love pop and a little hip hop when I work out – Stuff I never listen to outside of a good sweat session. I'm already thinking of my marathon playlist even thought I have until October.
Words are incredibly powerful, especially the ones we say to ourselves.
Have an amazing race!

Reply

I looked up your Du Hast song- hilarious. I do either pop or hard rock when I run- get some Metallica! I start every race with For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Reply

My running tunes change. Sometimes it's poppy, sometimes it's angry, sometimes it's relaxing. I think it really depends on my mood.

And positive thinking definitely helps!

Reply

Hi! I just voted for you!!! I love reading your blog! It is definitely the best :) Good luck on you upcoming races! You go girl!

Reply

For intervals or tempo workouts I go all gangsta with my music, sometimes poppy stuff too. Basically music I would never listen to in real life.

I definately believe in the power of positivity!

I am going to vote for you now, your blog is my fave!

Reply

I totally voted, not just for the promise of swedish fish (although that was a huge motivating factor) but mostly because I really do think your blog rocks!!!

I listen to angry music when I run too. Eminem is my favorite!

The night before a race I keep it pretty low keep but definitely avoid the fiber!

Postivie thinking does wonders, absolutely. I work on that with my students all the time.

Reply

That's crazy about the rice!! I heard that if you talk to your plants they will grow better but I kinda didn't believe it. Wow!

So today I had to fit in a long run in a very short amount of time. I ran 8 miles in 1:35 (not particularly fast, but really fast for ME), and then realized I had no time to shower before babysitting. All I could think about was all your posts about not washing your hair and such.. except I was SO gross. Hahaha it all worked out, though.

What is your favorite type of music to run too?
– Anything from rap to rock to pop. But today I tried running without my ipod (just to see if I could) and it forced me to push my pace just so I'd finish faster. Whatever works?

What do you eat the night before a race?
– I'm still trying to figure this out. Before my next race (just a 5 miler) I'm going to try the spaghetti thing and see how it goes.

Do you think our words impact our lives?
– ABSOLUTELY. They impact our lives, other people's lives, everyone around us! I've stopped thinking about "if I do a marathon, if I want to do one someday" and I've started thinking WHEN. WHEN I do a marathon, it'll feel so incredible to finish. WHEN I do a marathon, I hope to do it in the four hour range. Etc. It makes a world of difference, and it's definitely helped my confidence (both as a runner and in life).

Reply

I like the playlist! Bleed American was always one of my favorites for running.

I'm right there with you on the leg hair thing. I always feel bad for my acupuncturist since she has to get all up close to stick needles in my legs.

Reply

I voted for you!

Congrats on winning the Chick9 at Blonde Ponytail!

I love pop, hip hop, rap, rock, country.. ok pretty much anything when I run as long as it's is more fast paced and has a great beat to it.
My old school and love me some speghetti and bread!
I definetly think words impact our lives!

Reply

I love listening to all sorts of stuff when I run, but most of the songs have some sort of techno beat. In addition you'll find lots of random stuff like movie soundtracks (try listening to music from Spiderman while you run and NOT feel like you can climb walls).

When I'm hurting, I turn my headphones all the way up and listen to Nine Inch Nails or something equally angry, especially F*** The Pain Away by Peaches. It's completely inappropriate (I blush when I listen to it) but it totally does the trick.

Reply

You have my vote!

I love sleigh bells when i need something to really kick my butt, and kanye west's monster always does the trick.

I definitely think words impact your life. If you approach things with a positive can do attitude even if you dont believe it right away it totally makes everythign better and easier

Reply

You're too cute girl! I am TOTALLY anti-time management. I mean… I don't mean to be, but I just can't stop! I can spend hours reading blogs, but what I really need to do is clean the house or tackle that laundry monster in my closet…le sigh…when will we ever learn.

Reply

Interesting playlist. I enjoy seeing what other runners listen to. I see you have some P.O.D. in your list (awesome!). Have you checked out some Skillet? It's good stuff that helps me tackle the hills at the end of my regular running route.

Reply

I just voted for you! And I want YOU to eat the swedish fish! You inspire me and I love love love your blog–you crack me up, girl!

Reply

Just voted for you:) Your blog is seriously my favorite. I save it for last every day because it's the motivation I need to get through all the other ones I love too! :)

Reply

Is it bad I know of Du Hast?! I love hard and heavy music too–the remixes of hard rock and rap/hiphop are pretty killer too!

Going to vote for you right now!!

Reply

You're hilarious. I saw my eyebrows in the rear view mirror today and almost wrecked my car. I love remixes for running – something with a good beat that gets me moving. If there's a lull in the playlist, I get lazy. That experiment is so awesomely random! I <3 you.

Reply

LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEe this playlist!!! Generally, I listen to upbeat, high tempo electronic tech/dance music when running and angry music when lifting but lately ive been listening to the angry music when running and have noticed i actually run better with it. I dunno but i dig it.

Reply

Your blog just reminded me I need to do some laundry so I have something clean to teach in tomorrow. This may be TMI, but I actually did the sniff test to my outfit this morning…

I don't want to be known as the smelly teacher. :)

Love everything you just said. voted.

Ohhh I love listening to angry music and techno! It makes me feel so hardcore. My favorite is anything by The Prodigy, and right now I'm VERY into this dubstep stuff by Skrillex.

Im new to the blog and absolutely loving it, you're super inspiring <3

Reply

I love love angry music when I run. Metallica, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Rise Against, Enimen, Alice In Chains…bring it on!!!

And I totally believe that our words impact our lives. I try to be so careful to use the right words around my kids. I know they soak everything in like little sponges and I try so hard to be a positive role model for them!

Reply

You KNOW I voted for you YESTERDAY and I am again right now :) you totally deserve it :) And linkin park for the running jams are whats up. My team used to laugh at me because I was known to listen to the occassional Korn song before a game…no I don't even like Korn but its battle music! haha

Also, I love your writing style, I feel like I know you and I kinda, might, sorta, wanna be like you when I grow up lol ;)

Reply

Are you do anything different to one over the other? Or just the words you are using with them? What a really neat experiment! How old are your students?

Reply

I LOVE to listen to Jimmy Eat World and Rise Against when I run. But I mix in a bunch of Britney, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga too. Just to keep things upbeat.

Reply

Gorgeous chica I voted for you yesterday!!

I like upbeat music when I rub, pop, hard rock, glee soundtracks… lol. As long as it has a fast beat, i'm good. And I'm so glad your run went well today!! I really want to come cheer you on this weekend. You have to text me with your results!

Fav pre run food? Pasta!!! Yummy delicious pasta. No veggies, fiber=rot gut.

And I'm a total believer in positive self talk! :)

I've been loving pancakes as a night before a race meal. They settle well with me and taste great.

I think words totally affect our lives. Neat experiment you're doing. : )

pre-race food: pasta!!!!

words: yes! i believe they totally play a role in our lives. everyday. positive or negative. its funny how the rice changed. totally true.

i voted for you!!! under the nutrition category of course :) I cannot get enough of your blog, you are too funny! I am stealing your playlist for my half marathon in June. it is BRILLIANT and dont let anyone tell you other wise!

prerace food: cafe rio or homemade something with avocado and chocolate covered pretzels!

I am trying that rice experiment with my art students. I totally believe you, I just want to see it happen.

PS totally random but I was talking about you with a girl I work who teaches health with and she said she went to school with you…Katie Abrams ring a bell? and then I saw a post about you on hubby's friend's blog, Bianca Booth. Maybe we are just destined to meet someday and become besties?!

Ha! Love that chest hair guy :)
I really need to pay Ben the courtesy and grab a razor every now and then too…

Reply

Haa…I am the same way…I listen to really angry music, but only when I run. Have you tried Papa Roach?…not listening, to be loved, and time is running out…really anything tho…Hinder is great too…LOVE all american nightmare, striptease, and take it to the limit…indestructible by disturbed is REALLY good too :) gotta go check out rise against NOW!!! Thanks so much for posting your playlist!!!

Reply

I love Rise Against! I alos like to listen angry music! :) What a neat experiment for your class!

Reply

I love your playlist: I listen to angry music all the time, but never listen to anything at all while running (unless it's on the treadmill, in which case I'll take any form of distraction! But for races, it's the sound of silence…or my knees cracking.)

Du Hast is by Rammstein! They're my favourite band :)

Thanks for the music! I have a half marathon in Paris next weekend and I am working on my playlist.

Good luck with the run, my friend!

Reply

Your playlist is hardcore!
I like rock music, or totally cheesy pop music (or in fact high school musical or hairpsray soundtrack!)- although at the moment I listen to podcasts of radio shows instead- I like the talking to give me company!
Before a race I eat pretty normally, and then load up after. Probably not right, but I feel like I dont want to be too full while running. Weird.

Reply

PS I voted :)

Reply

I totally just voted for you!
And if you ever send me spin mix cd's you have to add the angry music one too! I thought i was the only one who loved linkin park and angry yelling music while running! Seeeee….. were bffs!

Reply

I like to listen to really high temp rap and pop music while running but on a few long runs have to turn to rock. Every once in a while I throw in an upbeat happy lyrics song too to get my mood up! Rise Against has to be my favorite rock band, my boyfriend and I have seen them twice! They're so good in concert but we definitely don't fit into 'the crowd'. I am so bad with the negative self talk but I'm working on it=) I don't really have a set pre race meal, I'm nervous about the whole fiber thing, it was a problem that took 5 min. off my time last year. Like you really wanted to know that..lol

Reply

I listen to Christian Rock like POD, Thousand Foot Krutch and Skillet!

Reply

Totally voted for you! hope you win!!!

Reply

Of course I voted for you! I love your blog! Here's what I wrote: Hungry Runner girl is hilarious, inspirational, and real. She provides so much motivation for my own running but you never feel like you are reading a stuck up blog of an elite athlete, you feel like you are talking to a friend!
Glad your knee is feeling better, and thanks for posting your playlist, I could always use more ideas. I am guilty of spending an hour in the morning reading blogs and drinking coffee and then spending 6 minutes throwing clothes on and running out the door.

Reply

I am the same exact way- pop for teaching spin and angry music for running! try out Eminem's Til I Collapse= it is rap but it is ANGRY!

Reply

I definitely believe words affect our lives. That is why I try to say at least 5 positive affirmations to myself every day. It does help.

Reply

that's crazy about the jars of rice! who would have thought! My favorite thing to run to are podcasts of NPR, yeah, and you thought you were weird.

I totally voted for you! Awesomeness! Btw I like pop and hip hop music but I mostly listen to alternative and I love Rise Against, great running music! Good luck tomorrow!

yay for a race this weekend!!!! love the playlist. and i'm sure the students don't notice the shirt…at least i hope so. otherwise i'm in trouble.

Reply

You sooo sound like me! I HAVE to have my play list perfect! I like anything with a really fast beat. The faster the beat, the faster I go! I'm gonna have to add Linkin Park & JayZ though. That's a good one. You have a few on my play list! Oh! I just added Blow by Kesha! It's fast too! Have you heard it?

Good luck tomorrow! I know you'll kick trash! I'm doing a 5k tomorrow to prepare for my half… yeah, I don't know how that really prepares me but I'm counting it as a speed workout. LOL!

Reply

May I suggest adding "Uprising" by Muse? Its the one that song powers me through anything.

BTW – I'm coming to UT to run the half at the SLC Marathon now, in addition to the Utah Valley Half!

Reply

I think I learned the 'no fiber' rule before my last long run … the hard way (not quite the SUAR way, but bad enough).

Last long run this Saturday … then race next week.

GL in your race. Inspire me!

Reply

That rice experiement is the coolest thing ever! The power of positivity!

Reply

I voted for you!! :)

I don't listen to any music when I run…I lost my first ipod and then my second was stolen! So if I'm on the treadmill I watch tv, otherwise I just enjoy being outside and think about lots of random things. Maybe that's why I'm not as fast as I want to be!

I'm the same with night before meals – pasta, bread, sometimes chicken or fish – never fiber and nothing spicy!

Yes I totally believe that our words (directed at others and towards ourselves) impact our lives and make a huge difference. You cannot truly be happy if you treat others badly or disrespect them, and I think the first step to being optimistic and happy about your life is putting those good thoughts in your head and believing in yourself – after that life will fall into place!

Reply

I spend SO much time on my playlists it's ridiculous!

I'm a believer in positive words and energy but I'm in shock about those rice jars!! It makes me want to try it! Even though I will sound crazy talking to jars but I sound crazy anyways so I guess it won't hurt my repuation.

VOTED! Good luck :)
