Pumping up the protein.

I should be eating 80-90 grams of protein a day.  Not 80 grams of sugar (but I love it so much) but 80-90 grams of high-quality protein.   I was shocked when Billy filled me in with this bit of information

But wait, I am a runner and it should be all about carbs i.e. cookies, cinnamon-sugar bread, oatmeal, pizza and pasta right?!?!

I am figuring out that carbs are very important but so are all the other NUTRIENTS.  I am doing great on carbs, taking my vitamins, eating more fruits and veggies than a psychologically normal person and getting enough fat (read 7 avocados in 3 days) but a lot of times I forget how important it is to eat me some protein.  I want my’ huge’ muscles to recover quickly and rebuild stronger and better after a great workout.

I focus so much on my training but forget that nutrition plays a HUGE role with performance.  I think I do this because I get scared over cutting out foods and being obsessed over what I am eating.  Here’s the dealio though…..I don’t have to be scared because I am not taking any food away (skittles will still be eaten at all hours of the day), I am just focusing on adding more NUTRIENTS and fueling my body in the best ways possible so that when I am at the starting line at Boston I know that I have done everything possible to succeed.

Let’s get the protein rolling.  Lunch yesterday was an egg omelet with black beans and veggies with a side of broccoli (great source of protein) and a protein shake hiding in the back.

IMG_4164.JPG

I literally felt my muscles growing with each bite.  24 inch biceps here I come.

Dinner was with the parentals at the copy cat of Cafe Rio….Costa Vida. Grilled chicken salad with extra chicken:)

IMG_4170.JPG

I am going to apply for a part time job here so that I can sit in the back and spoon that mango salsa into my mouth with a ladle.

Plus Billy thinks a hairnet will look hot on me.

IMG_4174.JPG

To finish off the night I think I had to get some more protein in: The form of gummy bear flesh, that is animal protein right???

I so need more water. It's my worst habit… Not drinking enough! Haha. I ran a 5k this afternoon! Woohoo! :) Have a great day!

Reply

I'm pretty sure I get enough of everything…maybe too much….haha :)

I'm not doing anything this afternoon except laying on my bed, napping, watching tv, and snacking. yesssssssss.

Reply

Good for you, I'm all about the protein! And carbs too of course… and nut butter =). Nuts are awesome because they're protein and fat and I think I need to work on getting more fat. Because I'm a vegetarian and I LOVE to run and lift a ton I normally have some kind of supplement everyday either in powder in my oatmeal or in a bar. But my fave real source are kidney beans, dairy, chickpeas, eggs and veggie burgers!

P.S. Ice cream TOTALLY has protein in in, milk girl!

Reply

I probably get waaaaaaaay more protein than I should. I eat a pretty much double dose of it whenever possible. I love beef jerky and grilled chicken and eggs and beans. Yum. Usually my meals are over 50% protein.

Reply

I worked at Chili's when I was in high school and The Pizza Factory. Which ironically, is owned by the same person who owns the Costa Vida's.

I know that I could use a little work in all of the areas, vitamins being the top though. I don't take vitamins, but really should!

I always use a lower carb protein powder. I eat some form of protein at every meal and snack.

Sundays are lazy days. Light grocery shopping(we already went to Costco today). Then, cooking dinner and watching TV

Reply

i have to drive 2 hrs just to get to the cafe rio copycat…but i do, because its worth it. i think i eat more protein instead of carbs but i definitely need to eat more vegetables. they just never keep me very full. happy sunday!

Reply

I worked at IHOP for 2 months for the graveyard shift, and than Food Avenue at Target off and on.

I need to work on getting more water. I drink plenty when I'm running at the gym, but not enough after or when I run outside. I tried a belt when I ran my 10 this morning but it bothering me and the bottle leaked with every step so I just left it and will go back and get it later.

I try to eat peanut butter/almond butter every day as well as eating beans, eggs, and greek yogurt. I even eat morning star stuff sometimes just because it is good. We have meat at almost every dinner.

The oldest doesn't feel good so we might not do anything except listen to little ones be fussy and grouchy.

Reply

I love protein! Well mostly because I am obsessed with chicken and chocolate blueberry protein shakes :) I really do need to work on drinking more water, I am so bad at it!
Today consists of homework, lap swim, homework, 8 mile run, more homework, stuffing my face with whatever food I can find, and then finally even more homework! I really hate college right about now!

Reply

Protein is so important, and I try to get high-quality protein in cause I rarely eat meat (only seafood occasionally). Good thing thing there's plenty of plant based protein – beans and peanut butters and almonds (awesome snack!) and Thursday falafel wraps!
I know that I need more iron – I've tried to give blood before and it's low. It's probably from being a vegetarian runner.
Plans today are Grey's Anatomy & a cycle + core class.

Reply

I was just thinking of this topic. I'm off on my run but when I get back on plan on drinking a protein drink (whey protein powder) with kale, plain yogurt, berries, banana, etc. This will help me get more protein, veggies and fruit. I also usually have an egg for breakfast.

I used to work at a Jason's Deli and I loved it! Happy Sunday Janae. I'm doing church on my podcast while running…I'm such a heathen. :(

Reply

Okay, I'm really not a heathen. Just trying to fit it all in. But I plan on praying, and listening to a good sermon while running. Does that count? :)

Reply

I'm not a big meat fan (not a vegetarian, just don't eat a lot of mean) and prefer to get my protein from things like nuts, beans, lentils and whole grains like quinoa.

Reply

I find that fat is what I need to take in, in order to feel truly full. But that gummy bear ice cream looks truly devine!

Reply

Those salads look yummy!

Reply

I definitely need more water and less sugar/chocolate/all things yummy. wait, is pizza a food group? Yeah, I need less of that too.

my plans the rest of the day is to dust my living room and try not to do another thing that can be construed as productive. my bet is that i will be successful at that.

Reply

Funny you should mention this! I am reading Paula Radcliffe (my herione!!)'s autobiography and she talked a bit about the importance of protein after training seshs!

My protein foods of choice? Extra-Protein Cookie Dough Balls. And nut butter. YUM!

You are SUCH a BEAUTIFUL girl Janae, you know that?:)

My first job was as a dishwasher for a fine dining restaurant, and I also worked at Einstein Bagels for many years.

My fave way to get protein is smoothies, greek yogurt, pb, or beans, but I know I probably don't get enough.

Reply

Billy and I worked at the same restaurant in Austin, but at different times. He was there a couple of years before me – such a funny coincidence! I love that you're learning so much about nutrition. :) I'm going for a bike ride this afternoon…just trying to decide where to ride…and if I can peel myself away from cheesy Sunday movies on TV.

Reply

When I was a lifegaurd, we sold ice cream during break, does that count? ;)

I need more water, i just hate it plain! I love me some peanut butter, nuts, chicken, eggs, tuna, and tofu for protein. But not all together, eww…haha.

I went to an open air market this afternoon but I have a budget like yours Janae, only window shopping for me!

Reply

Lets have a protein party. Eggs, cottage cheese, etc. Those are my favorite!!
Best line of this post. Gummies bear are animal protein? LOL!!

I definitely need more fats and protein!!!! My main problem is that I don't really crave meat….sooo I really need to work on not filling my plate up with yummy salad and bread, and adding meat to my plate as well! =D
Hope you have an awesome weekend!

Sunday afternoon involves my first Bikram Yoga class today!

I have a serious fat issue. Avocado's are so expensive in MA! I get most of it through olive oil, but theres only so much oil I can fry eggs in :)

Reply

i love me protein.. i get it from beans, nuts, nut butters, tofu, vegan protein powder and all that! and carbs rock.. i love me my complex carbs ESP fruits and veggies hmm i think i gt a pretty good carb, fat and protein ratio every day.. so maybe vitamins and minerals cuz i never pay attentino to those little buggers!

Reply

I need more protein…and more candy! I'll get on that right away! And mango salsa? Yes please!

Reply

I once worked at a dining room in a retirement home. It was hard work;the elderly people there would laugh at you if you dropped food, complain if you had your nails painted, and say their order so fast you didn't have time to write it down, then yell at you if you asked to repeat it… the only good part was all the free food.. which possibly led to my 20 lb. weight gain that year..

I need to get more Vitamins and protein, I think. I try to eat it at every meal, but I don't think the protein from hummus, cottage cheese, or peanut butter is enough to handle my bulging guns ;).

I plan on taking a nap, going to the gym, and then settling in with some econ. studying and a little House marathon, perhaps with some ice hockey sprinkled in.

Reply

I worked at a Bonefish Grill and LOVED it…they also had yummy mango salsa. As far as protein goes, my main sources are greek yogurt, beans and lentils, and egg whites. All of which are filling and delicious. My Sunday plans include finishing up a paper and presentation due next Wednesday and taking Salsa lessons with my man!!

Reply

Gummy bear flesh definitely counts as protein, as do Swedish fish, Reese Cups and Peanut M&Ms. Because I said so. And because I live in a dream world.

In my real world, I need to get better about vitamin C and calcium. It's that whole being pregnant thing.

And I have worked at several eateries – Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel (hello, hashbrown casserole!) and the dining hall when I was in college. I also made cupcakes for money once. Does that count?

Reply

Working as a server got me through college. Very happy not to be working that job anymore. But the tips were great.

I need protein. I am eating a huge bowl of oatmeal as I type.

Since I just ran a marathon this morning and got a B.Q. time. ( not a PR boo). I think I will veg. today and enjoy it.

Reply

I think I do OK with my protein, I can tell when I don't eat enough protein because I get hungry really quickly after a meal, so I try and work in enough with each meal.

Sunday plans – got a 6 mile run in and now taking care of sick kiddos, I am so over illness!

Reply

Cottage Cheese!

I LOVE cottage cheese… it is especially amazing on broccoli and/or wheat thins (both melted or cold). I also make mini breads with dry curd cottage cheese (its cheaper than "regular" cottage cheese and lasts longer… but only tastes good added to other dishes) mixed in, and then topped with cucumber hummus!

1/2 cup of Dairyland regular cottage cheese has 15g of protein; while their dry curd cottage cheese has 22g of protein!

Reply

I need to work on my water consumption! I filled up a 64 oz bottle of water and have been sipping it all day :)

Reply

I've worked at the same restaurant for 4 years. It was actually my first job, and I've only ever worked at one other place.

I probably have a harder time getting in protein than anything else. Maybe?

Favorite protein sources are peanut butter, cottage cheese, and greek yogurt.

To get a little extra protein I've been adding in protein powder to foods.

AND my afternoon plans are basically being LAZY, alternating icing and heating my knee, and printing out sources for a paper I need to write… not much different than any other day, really.

I could go for some protein in the form of frozen yogurt right now… maybe tomorrow.

Reply

Greek yogurt has A TONNNNN of protein. I eat it for breakfast (with berries and honey) or even at lunch. It's sour-cream-esque so it tastes really good in soup or… on ANYTHING. Try it if you haven't :-)

Reply

Protein, for sure! I am a vegetarian and sometimes I forget to work on getting enough protein. There are some days where I overload on carbs and barely eat protein. And the thing is I can always tell when that happens because my morning workout feels sluggish and strained. When I eat enough protein, I tend to have an awesome workout – the kind where you feel like you could go forever! Your ice cream/frozen yogurt looks awesome!

Reply

I come up short on vitamins and minerals and sometimes protein, since I'm a vegetarian. I always have enough carbs though! I worked at Ritter's Frozen Custard for about 3 years during high school and I don't think I ever want to work at another food establishment, there's way too much cleaning involved! My plans are egyptology homework, blogging, and then sleep!

Reply

i've never worked at a food establishment but my husband was the fast food king in HS/college, lol.

i need more protein… for sure. i'll practice your tips!

peanut butter! and greek yogurt. love it!

sunday afternoon: got home from church & made lunch for today/prepped lunches for the week. watched purdue beat OSU- yay! and need to get some HW in before a meeting later. woohoo…off i go!

– Thanks for the link back to me! Your pictures look great, not to metnoin the peppers! The recipe I based mine off of originally called for quinoa, so I’m glad to see it’s made it back to that! The food blogger circle of life!

Do you like Greek yogurt? Or peanut butter. Great for protein and sustaining hunger.

My plans including going to the Urgent Care for sinus infection meds. So fun for a Sunday.

I think a hairnet would look awesome on you too :)

Reply

When I get enough protein my life/mind is in its best balance. i looooooooove protein. I hope you will find your new amped up protein to do the same.
I get mine in all forms: (I have foods I too am scared of, but meat is not one of them) I like burgers (don't eat them out usually, but homemade from ground sirloin feels great in my system) Plus, then i put the burger on multigrain bread with spinach and tomato. One of my favorite sandwiches, I think burgers get a bad rap because of FF chains. I prepare chicken in 100 ways, in fact I should send you my favorite recipe because it is best cold and cut up on salad the following day. I am not of fan of deli meats so i often make a real roast beef or turkey and make sandwiches from that or top my salads for the week with it. Non animal sources, I have almonds with me at all times. (natural and unsalted are my favorite) PB = ymmmmmmmm. Eggs = ymmmmmmm.

i need to work on getting more water. I still love me some diet soda, more for the bubbles than anything else.

Sunday: gotta grade some papers. I keep procrastinating from this. The 1 hour nap I took was lovely. The hubby and I will watch Amazing race tonight.

Reply

Never worked in the food industry. I've only ever had a couple "jobs" before my full time employment. I was a nanny for most of my kid job years.

Since I'm a veg, my protein is beans and pb. Two of my favorite foods baby!

My Sunday afternoon plans were lunch with Mike's family and now I'm chilling out with two giant lazy bum dogs. It's awesome.

Reply

Mmm, Fazoli's is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I definitely need to get more water. I always forget to drink it and then I'll try to make up for it by drinking too much in one sitting. Guess I should add water drinking to my Sunday plans. Right now they include catching up on this week's primetime in bed and blogs.

Girl it is totally fine, we just bought a giant bag of avocados and they are gone. Good thing they're meant for being eaten:)

Slash I have been UP on my protein lately! I love my protein powder, but my fave sources are green vegetables (broc yum:)) and quinoa and beans and HUMMUS!

Slash I am currently en route to DC:) aka road trip with my marathoner dad!

Reply

Ha ha! Animal protein in the form of gummi bears! I was a waitress at Old Chicago-but that's about it–I would love to learn how to make killer drinks at Starbucks though.

I need to actually take my vitamins rather than let them decorate my cupboards!

Since I eat a jar-o-PB/day, I'd say that my best source! Or, and my PB protein bars!!

You are learning so much–empowering!

Reply

I need more vegetables, so vitamins and minerals….I've been really good about trying to sneak more in, I've added teh green monster to my diet, and thankfully my better half loves them, so GM breakfasts have become common place. And I've started making a huge salad at the beginning of the week, so for when I need veggies in a pinch it's already ready for me. Just a little lemon juice, and olive oil, and I'm good to go!

Reply

Protein is my issue too, exacerbated by the fact I'm vegan and have one heck of a sweet tooth. Until recently I had problems with fat too, but since adding in nut butters again I think I probably exceed the RDA of them :P

I never knew broccoli was a good protein source! Just another excuse for me to eat it despite my stomach not being too happy with the lovely green trees…

I <3 protein!! You will have no trouble getting more in!!!

Reply

I definately need to work on getting more protein in my diet as well. Carbs and fat, I got that covered! Protein..not so much. I get my protein from nuts/nut butters, yogurt, chicken, and eggs.

Reply

My first job was at Carrabba's Italian Grill. The food was amazing there.

I get my protein by chocolate milk, peanut butter, meat, cottage cheese on my salads as well as turkey, and various other ways. I absolutely LOVE chocolate milk after my run.

In fact you can mix milk with dry milk and add syrup or powdered chocolate mix to make it even more carb and protein packed. We are talking about 44g of CHO and 33g protein. It is probably the best chocolate milk ever too!! We got the recipe from our teacher in sports nutrition last year. And if you add orange juice instead of chocolate it tastes like orange julius…so I'm told. Haven't tried it though.

Reply

I was a server at Pizza Hut. I tried to be a pizza cook for about a week but I didn't like it so told them I wanted to wait tables I liked coming home with tips!

I need to work on my vitamins! I always forget to take them :(

I get my protein in after a workout usually with a PB sandwhich. But I also love chicken or turkey and occasionally we will have steak.

Reply

My personal trainer told me I need about 80-100g of protein a day. But she also told me to make sure I'm not eating more than about 30-35g during one meal because of the way the body processes it.

I don't think you'd need a protein shake as well as eggs for your meal. But maybe a shake as a snack a couple hours later. I'm no nutrionist, but that may be something good to look up with all your research lately.

Reply

LMBO… the very first time I went out with my now-husband, I had to school him that gummy worms and gummy bears ARE, in fact, a source of protein! The next day, he put a bag of gummy worms in my mailbox. lol (he also put in Sesame Street band-aids cuz I had never ever had picture band-aids before in my life… another topic we discussed).

I've worked in the restaurant industry. Gave me the deepest appreciation for the folks who work wherever I eat when I go out.

I need to work on water the most.

I get my protein in with brown rice and scrambled eggs as a quickie snack or meal. Sometimes I'll throw some chicken or fish in with it…. and often add a veggie like broccoli or cauliflower. Occasionally a little cheese in there too. Lots of different bean dishes… chili, a mediterranean bean stew that I like to make, basic beans and rice… I also do eat meat. When I have gone vegan, it takes too much time out of the day to eat enough for me to not lose too much weight… so meat I eat. I have some sort of meat/poultry/fish pretty much every night for dinner… and then often eat the leftovers for lunch the next day. I am learning how to cook these things. Sometimes it is pretty interesting. But I am a "food is fuel" kind of gal. Eat to live.

I am going to go teach my 11-year old how to play Gin Rummy this afternoon. He is the only one home… well, except the baby who is now napping :)

Reply

Forgot the QUINOA!!!!! LOVE quinoa! Great source of protein :)

Reply

I'm trying to cut back on my animal products, but I've enjoyed the new recipes with beans I've been using as replacement protein.

I've worked HARD this afternoon! It's a beautiful day here in West TN (73 degrees! WHAT?!) and we've spent it outside doing some major landscape cleaning!

I finally had a Sunday off from work! Woohoo! I had lunch with two of my sisters, and now I am home doing laundry and will be taking a nap soon. I'm going to make an apple cake for Bud and relax.

Your dinner looked terrific! I think I need to work on minerals and protein,,,and always water. Today's plans, after church go to the singles meal this time hosted at the beach, and also hang with my younger siblings. I will come work part time with you there too! I'm in love with Mango Salsa. Its hard to come by on a island though… (Sad face)

My main sources of protein = dairy and nuts/beans/seeds/PB. Yum, PB

Your meals always look so delish!

I have never worked at a food establishment- probably for a good reason. I wouldn't fit through the door on my way out!
It's so funny how we are both going through similar training issues lately- I too am training for a 10 miler in May and want to do everything right, so I can't blame it on too many sweets or lack of good nutrition. I'm trying really hard to fuel my body the right way- protein is so important! it seriously gives me a great boost! But the Swedish fish in my TM cup definitely don't hurt either:)
I hope you have a great long weekend – we teachers need it just to get through to the following one:) thanks for the foodie inspiration- keep it up!!!!

Reply

Yay for more protein…important stuff! I have worked at The Cheesecake Factory(this was amazing)and Razoos! I make a lot of weird protein muffins… There is nothin like getting bread and protein at the same time! ;)

Reply

Protein is a hard one. I do love beans and greek yogurt has tons of protein and I eat that. I'm just not a lover of meat. I would be happy with all veggies… my husband, not so much. He would be happy with all meat. I need to work on getting in more vitamins. I am such the slacker because they make me queezy and I practically vomit trying to swallow them. THE PERILS!!!!

Reply

I need to get more protein in my diet too! I try to drink a protein shake a day…like for lunch…but really the only other protein I get it from peanut butter :)
Your milk shake looks good..especially with gummy bears! :)

Reply

Your salad and ice cream look delish! Protein is a tough one! Do you ever use any protein powders or anything? They are easy to sneak into milkshakes and smoothies and can add an extra 20 grams of protein easily!

Never worked at a food place before! Not sure if I would still like the food afterwards…haha. Working retail a few years ago kinda turned me off to that store…is it the same in the food industry?

I definitely need more fats and protein–it is hard! I try to get protein and fat from peanut butter, avacado, etc. Also, for protein I drink a lot of smoothies w/ powder, and greek yogurt with fruit on top.

Staying inside today–we've got a blizzard outside!

Reply

Good for you on uping your protein intake!! your body/muscles will thank you!!
I think i could up my protein intake aswell.

I really find a Cafe Rio somewhere, that food always looks yummy!

I worked at an ice cream shop from spring of 10th grade through freshman year of college. That's when my metabolism was amazing and it didn't matter that I brought myself home kiddie cups of vanilla custard with rainbow sprinkles.

Which of the six essential nutrients (Carbs, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals and Water) do you need to work on getting more of?
–I have to work hard to drink all the water I'm supposed to in a day.

How do you get your protein in?
–I shoot for 65-80g of protein from…Greek yogurt (12-15g per serving), Glass of milk/Milk in cereal/Milk in coffee (8g per cup), Chicken/Beef/Fish/Beans/Eggs/Quinoa, Almond or Peanut Butter (8-9g per 2 tbsp)

What are your Sunday afternoon plans?
— Did my long run, 9.17 miles! Already got boring stuff like grocery shopping and laundry out the way yesterday.

Reply

I worked at Taco Bell for 3 days and an Italian restaurant for about 5 months.

I probably need to work on my protein too. I'm a vegetarian so I get my protein from beans, nuts and meat replacements mostly.

Reply

Since you love sweets… try Pure Protein bars… super good and high protein snack/desert. OR Atkins bars are good too. Greek yogurt with choc chips or gummy bears to add to your sweetness…. Add hard boiled egg to your delish salad. (Prepare a bunch so you always have on hand).

-I worked at Edible Arrangements. You know, making fruit look like flowers. Oh and having as many chocolate covered strawberries as one could eat in a day.

-I probably need more protein and minerals. I should drink more water too.

-For protein I love yogurt, soymilk, beans, and peanut butter. Typically not all together though. :)

-Today was my long run–24 miles. Afterward I sat on the sofa and crocheted my friend's newborn nephew a baby beanie. I am getting old. : )

Reply

Since I don't run as much as you I don't need nearly that much protein – I get my 30 or so grams easily. I need to QUIT all the sugary snacking! It fills me up before dinner and I feel bleah – I used to have the best dietary habits but since I have a crazy work schedule now and no lunch breaks I snack on junk too much.

Reply

I love meat, so I am guessing I get plenty of protein. I should check the numbers sometime. After my best friend took me to lunch and a movie for my birthday, I came home and the family rode their bikes while I ran 3.5 miles. Great afternoon!

Reply

ooh yea, applebee's, my uncle's little restaurant, concessionaire at the local pool.

i could most certainly work on protein, and probably fats, but i feel fairly well balanced for the most part. probably too much sugar ; )

sunday…pack lunches for the week, gym it up, shower/lunch, nap/lounge, laundry, lounge more.

Reply

I've only worked at rocky mountain chocolate factory, and that was dangerous. very dangerous…dark chocolate covered graham crackers anyone?!

I'm trying hard to get more fat in my diet to help hold me over longer, along with more protein…which I get mostly from nuts and beans. and hummus. oh yeah…

Sunday afternoon? nap time under the heating blanket…greatest gift ever.

I've never worked in a food service job! Most of my friends have though. I'm glad I didn't because I probably would have gained lots of lbs. haha And I definitely need to get better at drinking water consistently throughout the day especially when I'm at grad school (not living at home).

the only foodservice job I had was a Sonic carhop for 2 years in high school

I LOVE ice cream with gummy bears!!! Those salads always look amazing. I'm super jealous!!

I need to be better about my nutrition in general. I've definitely improved but I really need more servings of veggies, that's probably my biggest weakness. I love black beans and fish for protein. Oh and pb!!!

I think I walked about 10 miles this weekend plus my run so I'm doing well. Plus carried lots of shopping bags so I got in my weight training too!

Onto post #2

I only worked at pizza resturants till I got my office job

I use Muscle Milk protein powder, I get it at Costco, its a huge bag, and there is a coupon for, I think $6 off, thats 80 servings for, I think $27, which is dirt cheap for protein powder
