Sorry, for the late posting….I am just now getting out of bed a full 6.5 hours later than usual.

Time to get to know a little bit more about Utah…. I know it is all your favorite state, don’t get too excited.

At all family gatherings, funerals, celebrations and church get-togethers these cheesy potatoes must be served and all must eat them and enjoy them thoroughly.

Usually, there is also some green jello or raspberry sherbet punch served at the above mentioned activities.

IMG_3528.JPG

That monster roll in the back melted in my mouth and I could have eaten a bakers dozen of them.

I was grossed out by my niece stuffing olive after olive in her mouth.  Maybe she doesn’t have taste buds, those things are gross.

IMG_3531.JPG

I mentioned in the last post that we celebrated Christmas last night with my fam because we were all separated for the holidays.

My aunt bought my sis and I shampoo and conditioner.

I think this might be a hint but I am not sure, at least I didn’t get deodorant, breath mints and body spray like I did last year.

IMG_3532.JPG

Subscriptions to magazines and chocolate, I’ll take that.  Billy got a remote control helicopter, I think it may be his favorite present.

IMG_3536.jpg

So, all week I have been craving funfetti cake, I had to fulfill my craving and you can’t have cake without adding more calories to it in the form of white chocolate chips.

Too much sugar makes me do weird things and all of the sudden the party gets a little out of control.

Once upon a time I went 7 months without a bite of sugar (natural sugar was okay)  and it was the worst 7 months of my life.  Never again.

IMG_3553.jpg

What are common foods in your area?

-Funeral potatoes (cheesy potatoes with corn flakes on top) roast, jello, raspberry sherbet punch, taco soup and orange rolls.

Does sugar make you a little crazy?

-You think I have a lot of energy normally….wait until I have ingested 231 grams of sugar.  Maybe I am always doped up on sugar though and that is why I have so much energy!?!?!

What magazine subscriptions do you have?

Make sure to go with Momma K and Happy Birthday!!!

I'd say a common food around here is bruschetta. I mean how can you not love toasted italian bread covered in tomatoes and olive oil?

I definitely go a little batty on sugar. Whenever I start acting a little overly nuts, my husband will ask, "who gave you donuts today?" All because once at work i ate about a half a dozen donuts and then came home and was bouncing off the walls.

I have a subscription to Fitness and Real Simple (Best.Magazine.Ever)!

Also, what's with boys and kid's toys? We did a Yankee Swap and Mike's gift was nerf guns. Then he got a remote controlled spider for Christmas from his brother and was more psyched about that than anything else. Sometimes I wonder who I actually married.

Common foods in London? Er…fish+chips and kebabs.

Oh yes, sugar makes me go SO hyper! I'm on a sugar high right NOW thanks to chocolate chip cough ball baking and the leftover chocolate chippies!!! :D

Women's Running and Runner's World subscriptions all the way baby! Although I love buying trashy mags too to read on the elliptical! :P

Funfetti cake looks awesome btw! We don't really get that over here, but I wish we did!!!

Reply

I have nooo subscriptions.. because I keep moving! I do read Runners world online :)

I can't believe you would give up sugar for marathon training! From reading your blog, I don't know how you made it through those 7 months!!!

Reply

Your niece is adorable! I love that she stuck her fingers in the olives and is eating them the same way I used to, too cute.
Sometimes when I'm cranky all I need is some sugar and then I'm good to go again. Love sugar.
I have a stolen subscription of Runner's World from my dad- he's been out of the running game for years due to knee injury but he never stopped the subscription, so now I get it. Score! I just ended my Lucky subscription because I didn't read it that much and as part of my Christmas gift my sister got me a subscription to Shape.

Reply

And I can't believe you once went 7 months without sugar. Insane.

YOu're so funny – my Husband is Dutch and at every funeral there are Ham Buns!

I don't really eat sugar too much – if I do, it's turbinado/cane sugar.

No magazine subscriptions over here!

Haha, I'm from Michigan originally and we have funeral potatoes too! And actually call them that! Ours don't have cornflakes on top, but they are basically the same.

I don't eat sugar regularly. I gave it up in 09 and I have a treat here and there, and totally lapsed over the past 3 months but I'm off it again. My body has a pretty nasty reaction to it so it's better for me to avoid it. So many things are sweet naturally that I don't miss it!

Reply

Your staples are ours too. Those cheesey potatoes, and ahhhhhh yes, jello. Come to think of it, there is usually hot ham to accompany those white dinner rolls. i forget about it, because a good dinner roll and some butter is better than dessert for me.

I used to have an absolute sweet tooth. My husband used to use the phrase with me "ice cream is not a meal." However, something shifted and i did not like the way i felt after consuming so much sugar. I consciously watch how much sugar I consume and it has made a 100% difference! I miss my sweet indulgences, but i like myself a whole bunch more this way!

No magazine subscriptions for me, I have to catch up on a Barnes and Nobel date night.

my hubs makes a mean pavlova. Its a new zealand/austrailian dessert. Um, SUGAR, egg whites, SUGAR, and CHOCOLATE CHIPS and fruit on top. PLus WHIPPED CREAM…..with SUGAR! Its the best. I think you'd like it. :)

You went 7 months without eating sugar? I'm pretty impressed with myself if I can go a day without eating a brownie or a piece of chocolate!
Common foods – we have a cut of meat in California called tri-tip. Apparently this cut is not common in other areas. When my brother-in-law was in North Carolina he asked for tri-tip and they looked at him like he had 2 heads. It's great on the BBQ.
Magazine subscriptions – love cooking magazines. My 2 favorite are Food Network Magazine and Fine Cooking.
That's so funny that you got shampoo and conditioner for Christmas!

Reply

I grew up in MN and the staples were: meat (pork or beef), potatoes (mashed, with cheese, baked, whatever), and a lot of jello.

Now I live in Alaska and there is salmon everywhere you go. (I've actually gotten sick of it.)

I subscribe to Runner's World.

"Funeral Potatoes" Hahahahhahah!!!
i totally know what those are.

I live in the South so fried chicken is ALL over the place here. I personally think it is gross!!!

I can you NOT like olives. I could eat a whole jar. mmmmmmmm

Raspberry sherbert punch?? In Indiana, all I've ever had is pineapple sherbert punch.

In Indiana, corn is everywhere, on the cob, in bread form, pudding form, even as burger toppings.

Reply

In my neck of the hoods (ha) we have the Garbage Plate. You get one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. Fattiest food in the state of New York, and I've seen a guy devour TWO of them! I applauded him, but totally puked in my mouth haha

And sugar for me = madhouse. No bueno.

I subscribe to Shape and Women's Health, read 'em from cover to cover:)

Hmmmm – Texas is known for BBQ. That's for sure. As far as family gatherings, there are a lot of backyard cookouts with burgers and hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad. You and your sis are so beautiful and love that you are posing with you shamp/cond. I should probably go ahead and tell you that I wash my hair as infrequently as possible. Hahaha. Poor Billy – I go to bed with dirty hair all the time because I know I'm going to wake up in the morning and workout!

Reply

I think I'm the only Utahn who doesn't really like funeral potatoes. Now that I'm in North Carolina, sweet potato fries are everywhere (heaven!) as is bbq. But not the bbq with red sauce and beef. Pulled pork with a vinegar-based sauce. and it's amazing.

I have Shape, Fitness, Clean Eating, and New York Magazine. But I want Women's Health (again), Cooking Light and America's Test Kitchen (again).

Reply

sugar make me gain weight. ugh. but lately I'm loving the taste of it in my mouth. How do you stay so slim with all the food you eat. I'm envious!

Reply

I love the foot in the picture with you and Billy.

Where I'm originally from (Southwest Colorado) common foods include Mexican food (tortillas, beans and rice, chiles, etc. etc.) and basically meat and potatoes, and biscuits… now in Missouri it's… well, meat and potatoes and lots of fat! Oh, and TONS of Chinese! Seriously, TONS!

Sugar just kind of bogs me down.

And subscriptions, I have Health, Glamor, Self, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue… kind of odd, I know. I did the Glamor and Self because it was something like 2 years for both for $20. I've never heard of Clean Eating. I'll have to look for it.

Reply

Pittsburgh has chipped ham…but those cheesy potatoes look ah-mazing!

I love any chocolate candy, but I can't really eat like real sugar candy like sweet tarts because my teeth get really sensitive. Boo, but I like chocolate better!

And I have a subscription to Runner's World and Women's Health. My mom has Shape. I love getting RW in the mail. It's like crack. I read it all in one day the day it comes in and then keep reading it over and over again for the next month. :)

man alive that cake looks ridic.
we always have scalloped potatoes, cheesy noodles (skinny egg noodles w/ a cheesy kinda thing covered in bread crumbs), pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, deviled eggs. my fam seriously loves some salads…and never a green one unless i make it!

I'm not a sugar freak but i made magic cookie bars and banana bread this morning.

I have subscriptions to way too many magazines – cooking light, the week, health, runners world, women's running, martha stewart, the list goes on and on. I am addicted.

Cooking Light, Real Simple, and House Beautiful!

Howwwwww could you go through 7 months without sugar? I'm glad you have changed your ways. :)

Reply

I live in West Michigan … for the most part it is pretty traditional midwest – meat & potatoes, every type of casserole imaginable, etc. In West Michigan there is a high Dutch population so there are a lot of dutch dishes that are popular. You also find a lot of things with dried cherries or apples in them since Michigan grows those things.

Reply

Here in the Inland Northwest, common foods are: nachos, garlic fries, pasta and spinach salad, huckleberry anything, martinis.

Sugar doesn't effect me too much, but caffeine sure does!

My magazine subscriptions: Triathlete, LAVA, Runners World, Cooking Light.

Happy Sunday, Janae!

Reply

You and your olive hate… tsk tsk tsk.

My husband just bought himself a remote control helicopter a couple of months ago. He's had too much fun taunting the dogs with that thing.

I subscribe to Runners World and Running Times and I think that's it right now. I was subscribed to Cosmo, Self, Marie Claire, Glamour, and Fitness too until I just recently let them run out. I got them all (except the running ones) with Coke reward points. My husband drinks that poison like it's going out of style, but at least I get free magazines out of it.

Reply

I think I've had potatoes like that before (made in a big casserole dish?) Regional foods… Where I am from there is: The Garbage Plate. http://rocwiki.org/Garbage_Plates I haven't had one of those since I was in college. That's probably a good thing. And reading the website's description reminds me that White Hots are a semi-regional thing. At least I don't think you can get white hots outside of the northeast. After typing this and scrolling up to read other comments, I see chefkatelyn's from Rochester too!

Speaking of meat, I currently live in central NJ. In THIS area, there are foods like Taylor Pork Roll and Scrapple. (Ambiguous meat products).

I've never cut out sugar- unthinkable :)

Magazines: Runner's World, Scientific American Mind, and as a Christmas gift- Food Network Magazine.

Yeah, so I had to go no refined sugar for about 8 months because of my teeth. It. Sucked.

That cake looks yummy…now I'm craving cake! Just might have to make some cupcakes!

I subscribe to runners world, Women's health, and for Christmas my mom gave me a subscription to Cooking light. I am a magazine addict – I would probably subscribe to more if they weren't as expensive!

ok, olives are disgusting and weird. especially when people put olive juice in martinis, oh helllll no!

also, i now am craving funfetti cake. thanks a lot!! good thing i have 25 loaves of beer bread to eat instead.

This one time my sister and I went TWO YEARS without eating candy except we allowed it for one day… HALLOWEEN and then we may have eaten a year's worth of sugar in less than 24 hours. It was amazing…. the 24 hours of candy, not the two years part.

And OH how I miss funeral potatoes. An absolute staple at ANY gathering in my family. A few years ago while I was living in L.A., we had a 'girlfriends Christmas dinner party' and we were all supposed to bring our favorite dish that reminded us of home (we were all orphaned in L.A. for the holidays) and I, of course, brought funeral potatoes and they were a smashing hit! My friends practically licked the cassarole dish clean… okay, they actually did. :-)

Reply

Um no offense but…funeral potatoes sound pretty revolting!
Large gatherings here will have etouffe or jambalaya, both easy and cheap to prepare for a crowd; family reunions will be a crawfish boil or a fish fry; around Carnival there is a King Cake in every office. I don't eat a lot of the local foods (because fried food makes my mouth feel funny!) but I did have King cake TWICE today!

Reply

We live in a real foodie mecca. The de rigueur foods at every gathering seem to be sushi, artisan (only, of course) baguettes, and at least 5 different kinds of imported cheese. Add croissants if it is a morning event. Bonus points if it is all gluten-free ;-)

Reply

I never knew they were called funeral potatoes…we just call them cheesey potatoes and they are delish! :) I don't think excess sugar had too much of an effect on me…I think I eat too many sweets so I am immune! I subscribe to Runner's World and Shape :)

Reply

Maple syrup is my states food! My bf got a remote control helicopter for Christmas too and it's so fun to play with…and crash!

Down here in Texas, we like us some meat in taters, and some good 'ol TexMex!
You and your sis are sooo pretty! I get Runners World and Men's Health for the hubs!

Reply

I think that must be a kid thing to do. I remember I used to eat olives like that too but I absolutely can't stand them anymore. How odd. That funfetti cake looks delicious!

Reply

I got both the boys that exact same helicopter for Christmas, and all of the men were the ones playing with them! (and I think they all went and bought themselves one when the got back home).

That exact potato casserole is one we have at family dinners all the time! Usually with grilled burgers or steak, salad and fruit.

I get too many magazines- I am a tree killer. Sports Illustrated, Food Network magazine, US Weekly, InStyle, Cooking Light, Family Fun, Reader's Digest, Real Simple and Better Homes and Gardens. Okay, now that I've typed that list, I am embarassed by how many I actually get- but I did get a Nook for Christmas, so I can start downloading them instead of having paper copies all over! I do recycle them, though :)

Reply

OH MY GOSH that funfetti cake with the white chocolate looks SO GOOD! Seafood-y things like clam chowder, lobster, fried clams are pretty common in the Boston area and luckily I looove all of 'em!

I hate olives too! They are seriously nasty.

If I eat a lot of sugar late at night (which is pretty much every night) I tend to have really crazy dreams.

I have a Runners World subscription and that's it, but a food magazine would be fun.

Reply

You'll have to let me know how you like the Clean Eating subscription. I'm looking for a good cooking magazine, and that one always seems to catch my eye.

You are hilarious. I adore your blog everyday! I've never even heard of funeral potatoes…
My hometown is a really Asian-populated city. It's filled with dim-sum! (if you've ever heard of that)

Right now, I'm attempting the only natural sugar thing. It's working pretty good, so far (it's only been 1 week).

Glad you got your cake craving taken care of! Funeral potatoes are the best! Lasagna seems to be a staple that the missionaries say they get fed a lot. Gotta love green jello!

Clean Eating is one of my favorites! I will never get a subscription because it feels like Christmas whenever I find it in a store!
