While teaching nutrition in health today I displayed a picture of vegetables.  A girl raised her hand and asked what the big green thing was.  “BROCOLLI,” I replied.

She then went to say, “Hmm, is that good, I have never had it?”

Two more students said that they had never tried it either.

My heart hurt.  She had gone 16 years without knowing what broccoli is.

Not roasted in olive oil, not steamed over noodles, not dipped in ranch….nothing.

I am disappointed in this upcoming generation.

I have decided to honor broccoli after school today by eating 1/4 lb.  I think its feelings were hurt earlier.

Workout:

45 Minutes Spin

30 Minutes Stair Climber

15 Minutes Spin

Food:

Oatmeal with two apples diced and cooked right into the oatmeal

A pear with pb

Salad and a wrap.

I tried to eat a sucker but my mouth has calluses from the sour patch kids.

Last day to send in your snack. Okay, thats not true if you send me one later I will just post it another day:)  Read here if you want to learn more.

Is there a food that is fairly common that you have never tried before?

-I have never tried a Twinkie in my 24 years on earth.  Mock me if you would like but I think they look like a sponge and I refuse to eat something that has a shelf life of 200 years (ding-dongs don’t count).

I've never had a twinkie either! People always act so shocked, but I have no desire to try one.

I can't believe that she didn't know what broccoli was though :(

That is crazy! I grew up eating nutzo things like frogs legs and escargot. I get never having those things, but broccoli? Haven't they ever had Chinese take out? I can't say there is anything "common" or really uncommon, that I haven't tried. My parents made us try EVERYTHING when we were growing up. I distinctly remember getting paid a dollar to eat liver. Worst thing ever.

P.S. Got the package today!! Thanks so much!

My middle daughter ordered broccoli with her meal at a team dinner on a hockey trip last year. All the kids were gagging and even half the parents were shocked. Sad! All these little bodies that are skating countless hours every week fueled entirely by pizza and chicken nuggets.

OK-I've tried a Twinkie. Haven't tried a deep fried Twinkie on a stick which they actually DO make at the Roseau County Fair-nasty!

Nice workout! Have a great night!

I've never tried steak. I became a vegetarian at age 13 because I didn't like meat and so I never tried it!

Broccoli is one of my kids faves, I can't imagine having a child that didn't even know what it was, some parents leave me scratching my head.

That it so sad, I love broccoli!!! I have actually never eaten salmon, fish is too fishy for me! I have heard I am missing out though.

Ok, I have never actually seen an entire episode of Glee, but tonight I was flipping around and happened to watch a few minutes. One of the teachers held up a full head of broccoli and asked a student what it was. The student said, "A toilet brush?"
HOLY MOLY! All at the same time, I was laughing out loud and crying at the thought that this character wouldn't know what broccoli was. Art imitating life? Yikes!

So sad. But I can honestly say I've never tried cauliflower. I don't like the smell and it just looks yuck to me. Sorry to all you cauliflower lovers out there… :)

that is tragic. seriously parents…that's disappointing.

i'm vegetarian (born and raised)…so there's lots of stuff i've never tried…

Jamie Oliver did a television show which involved him going into classrooms and showing kids vegetables….and they didn't know what a tomato was. But they knew what ketchup was, of course! The future of America kind of worries me.

I've also never had a twinkie, and I'm quite okay with that.

I've never tried chocolate covered bacon.

I like broccoli, but my kids don't like it. I need to try putting sprinkles on it. :)

Oh- and you should bring in some broccoli for a snack. Maybe they'll eat it for extra credit. ?

My heart hurts over how stupid your student is. Whether she's ever eaten it or not, how the bloody h*ll could she not know what it is?!! I fear for the future of our country, and hope you totally shamed her. You know, the way I would have shamed you if you'd said something stupid in class! ;D jk Please tell me this didn't really happen.

I don't know if there is a food I have never tried. I'm pretty sure I have tried it all.

I'm pretty sure I would have kicked that girl out of my class.

That is crazy. Unfortunately, we like to blame "this generation', but it's not their fault: it's their parents'. Parents too often are willing to say "okay, whatever you like" when kids protests. And parents now don't want to eat vegetables and fruits. Why would they make their kids eat them? So sad. It was really hard for me to be a nanny and watch kids eat crap. I can't wait to introduce my (future) children to the amazing variety of yummy produce there is.

i have no idea how i found your blog but, i'm sure glad i did!

twinkies are disgusting. what is the world coming to? :) … broccoli is my kids favorite veggie. hands down.

for me, it's brussels sprouts. i try but, i just can't! i have two bags full in the fridge from the co-op that i don't know what to do with.

Okay, my kids don't like every veggie, but one that they do like is broccolli…at least dipped in ranch…that was my secret…that's how I got them to eat it at all at first. I have never eaten pearl onions or brussell sprouts and a whole lot of other things. I don't know why I can't bring myself to try either one. I love twinkies and chocolate hostess cupcakes…okay I go through phases of liking it and then eating it at another time and wondering how I ever ate that crap! I don't enjoy cooking so dinner is always what's easy and fast so I can just get it over with. Tacos are always fast and easy!!!

you should be proud! i made janae style broccoli soup today…mostly broc (no cauliflower). my husband and everyone else that came in today mentioned it smelled funny… hahaha Other than that, i love it!

That poor kid!!

I brought my youngest to the Farmers Market with me last time (she's 4), and one of the vendors was soooo impressed that she knew almost all of the veggies, even the eggplant :D

I eat everything, I can't think of something I haven't tried :(

I didn't eat a bowl of oatmeal until 2008. I had eaten oats in things (cookies, meatballs, etc) but never had a bowl of oatmeal!
